Chilumi Week 2026

Day 2: Water/Starconches

Work Text:

Lumine didn't know when, but she had come to love the ocean.

The crashing waves reminded her of roaring engines, the calls of gulls overhead were reminiscent of the emergency sirens that would go off during a meteor storm, the endless horizon almost an exact copy of the vastness of space. The ocean was a good substitute for what home was, or at least what Lumine once thought home was.

Being an interstellar traveler was not for the faint of heart, even more so when you were technically one of the last of your kind. A refugee spaceship quickly became your only source for home comfort. The same cold, mostly empty hallways within it became your whole world and the tempered glass that kept the harsh reality of space became your sky. For a very long time, this was home, and Lumine had seen it as fact.

Still, at times she found herself wondering. Sleeping inside the vessel that spirited her and her brother Aether away, Lumine had often dreamt what it would be like to have a true home once again. To live among the people and culture she once knew, to breathe in familiar air and feel the luscious grass underneath her feet; time that had long since passed. Did she still remember how the air of her first home felt? Could she still recall the feeling of that particular grass?

The sound of laughing temporarily broke Lumine out of her musings, and she turned to watch two familiar people frolicking at the water's edge. She then looked down to the starconch in her hand, rubbing the ridged texture between her fingertips. How long had it been since her journey as the famed traveler had ended? Weeks? Months? Lumine turned her attention to her growing middle and then glanced back to the two people playing in the water. No, years, it had definitely been years. Many wonderful years filled with friendship and love. Years that, instead of being faced with uncertainty, strife, and loneliness, Lumine knew peace.

Now, here she sat in the warm sand, nestled in the tranquility and comfort of the ocean that reminded her so much of her second home, picking out the best starconch she could find while watching her chaotic, red-headed husband playfully splash water on their daughter's face, and the girl with a smile as big as her father's, did her best to counterattack. This was the dream Lumine and her brother once held for so long for their people. To settle down in a place where they could laugh and their children could play with their parents. Sure, the Teyvatians will never know of their true origins and in a way Lumine and her twin were still the last of their kind but that didn't matter, their people finally had a home.

Lumine felt a pressure build up inside of her. She placed her hand on top of her rounded middle, soothing the baby inside of her. Of course, she thought, their people weren't the only ones who found home.

She had finally found home in Teyvat too.
