   Summary

   Based on the Liu Kang dialogue from the 2021 film.

   Before Cole Young, Sonya Blade, Kano, and Jax arrived, it was just Liu Kang and Kung Lao. Kung Lao has been destined to be Earthrealm's Champion since he could remember, having inherited his dragon marking through the bloodline of the Great Kung Lao. Liu Kang, his most treasured companion, has trained with him for the Mortal Kombat tournament since they were boys. Though just as skilled, Liu Kang can never truly join his shixiong without his own dragon marking. Without the privilege of a grand lineage, Liu Kang's only option is to take the marking from another, through blood spilt. Upon graduating from the Wu Shi, Liu Kang is given a name -- a potential path forward as a Champion of Earthrealm, and a route back to Kung Lao's side.
