Work Text:
Tamaki was sweating. He was stressed out of his mind, thinking about what he was going to do tonight. It was such a big step in a relationship. But he and Nejire had been together for years; he was ready for this.
Being ready didn’t stop the anxiety coursing through him.
He was fussing over every little detail of the outdoor candlelit dinner he’d set up. The placement of the dishes, the candles in the middle, even the position of the chairs. He wanted everything to be perfect, even if he knew Nejire wouldn’t care whether it was or not.
He adjusted the collar of his shirt for the millionth time. It was time for him to pick Nejire up for their date. His hands were shaking as he drove to her place.
“Looking as handsome as ever, Tama!” Nejire greeted him as she got into the car.
“And you, beautiful as always,” Tamaki replied.
“So, where are we going? You’ve been so secretive about tonight,” Nejire asked curiously.
“You’ll see.”
Tamaki stopped the car near the trail leading to the dinner. He quickly checked his phone, sighing in relief at seeing the text from Mirio confirming they’d finished setting up the food just a minute before.
“Walk with me?” Tamaki held out his hand. Nejire happily took it, and the two set off onto the path.
“It’s so pretty here!” Nejire grinned.
“Yeah…” Tamaki wasn’t really looking at the scenery. His eyes were focused on his girlfriend, his hopefully soon-to-be-fiancé.
Nejire gasped in delight upon seeing the dinner. She ran ahead, dragging Tamaki along by the hand.
“When did you get this set up?” Nejire wondered aloud, her eyes lighting up.
“I’ve been working on it all day, with some help from Yuyu and Mirio,” Tamaki rubbed the back of his neck. “Do… Do you like it?”
“I love it!”
The two ate dinner together, using only one hand each as the other’s were intertwined across the table. Nejire didn’t ask about Tamaki’s shaking, knowing he’d eventually tell her. He always did.
After dinner, Tamaki invited her on another walk, the two heading down to the beach. The moonlight reflected a silver glow on the ocean waves and a sparkle across the sand. The sky was clear and filled with millions of stars that couldn’t be seen in the cities.
“Wow,” Nejire breathed. It was a moment after that that she realized Tamaki’s hand was no longer holding hers.
She turned to the side, where her boyfriend was smiling at her shyly, his hands behind his back. He was still shaking, but his eyes were shining with happiness and excitement.
“Nejire,” Tamaki addressed. “I- I have loved you for a long time. The past eight years of my life with you in it have been amazing. And I don’t want any of it to end. I want to keep loving you until the day that I die.”
Nejire was blushing. Why must Tamaki just say cute things like that when she least expects it? She feels her heart rate speed up as she notices her boyfriend’s going down to the ground, until he’s on one knee.
“So, Nejire Hado,” Tamaki pulled his hands out from behind his back, taking out a box. He opened the box to reveal a gorgeous ring. “Will you marry me?”
Nejire feels happy tears begin to stream down her face as she gives her answer. “Yes!”
She tackles her boyfriend—no, fiancé—in a hug, knocking them both into the sand. The two sit up so Tamaki can put the ring on her finger.
Both of them had tears streaming down their face as they pulled one another into a kiss, still sitting in the sparkling sand.
