Work Text:
Izuku has felt very awkward for the past couple of weeks. Why? Because of the ‘mistletoe incident’.
Izuku isn’t sure where he’d gotten the sudden boost of confidence, but he’d been the one to pull Ochaco in and kiss her. On the lips. He could have just kissed her on the cheek to somewhat satisfy class members who were watching, but he’d gone for the lips. And Ochaco had kissed him back.
He didn’t know what to do. He had realized his feelings for Ochaco during their second year, but was convinced she wouldn’t like him back. But… She’d kissed him right back when he did. She was at least not disgusted at kissing him.
“You’re overthinking it, nerd,” Kacchan interrupted. Izuku hadn’t even realized he’d been mumbling about it. “If you haven’t realized she’s liked you since our first year by now, then I don’t think you ever will.”
“What?!” Izuku’s cheeks heat up at Kacchan’s words.
“Come on, it’s painfully obvious you two like each other. I was hoping the mistletoe would make you two finally stop beating about the bush and f*****g get together already,” Kacchan rolled his eyes, turning the page of his book.
Izuku was about to reply when something stuck out to him in Kacchan’s words. “Wait, you put that there?” Kacchan simply smirked in reply.
“Now, how about you actually go talk to her about it instead of ranting to me when I’m trying to read?” Izuku took the hint and left Kacchan in the common room.
“Ocha, he’s the one who kissed you. I’d say that proves that he likes you,” Jiro told the brunette who had freaked out about this same thing every day since it happened.
“But we were under the mistletoe! He was just doing what you’re supposed to do,” Ochaco stated.
“I think you’re forgetting how little hesitation he did it with, Ocha. You guys didn’t even stand there for a minute before Midoriya pulled you in. Also, he could have kissed you on the cheek instead, but he didn’t. Come on, it’s so obvious you two love each other,” Mina joined.
“Come on, Mina and I have been shipping you guys since our first year,” Hagakure added. “And you two are the only couple we have been shipping that hasn’t gotten together.”
“It’s about time for the party. Let’s head downstairs and make sure none of the boys have blown up the kitchen,” Momo cut it.
The party was pretty fun, but both Izuku and Ochaco were distracted. They kept meeting each other’s eyes when they glanced at each other, before embarrassedly looking away.
That continued until Bakugo ‘bumped’ into Ochaco, knocking her over. Izuku immediately ran to catch her and succeeded. Both blushed when they looked at each other.
“You okay?” Izuku asked her. She nodded and quickly got up, leaving his arms.
“Yeah, thanks for catching me,” Ochaco replied.
“You would do the same for me,” Izuku smiled, rubbing the back of his neck.
The two of them were quiet for a minute, standing off to the side, their classmates all around the common room watching the countdown go down. It was only a few minutes until the new year.
“Hey, could we talk?” Izuku finally asked, staring down at the floor, his cheeks red.
“Uh, yeah. Do you want to go somewhere specific for a chat?”
The two ended up sitting on the stairs, out of view of their classmates. Neither seemed to know what to say, but Izuku did place a hand over Ochaco’s, causing her to blush profusely.
“Ochaco, I-” Izuku finally started, but couldn’t seem to get his voice to say the rest as he made eye contact with her. He took a deep breath, trying to clear his head of worries.
“I- Well, we’ve been friends for a while. I always love being around you, find myself wishing for you to join things just so I can spend time with you. No matter what we do, it’s always best if you’re there. I love all my friends, of course, but something about you…” He slightly squeezed her hand. “Something about you is different. I feel different with you than anyone else, always have. I didn’t realize what that feeling was until our second year. Ochaco, I love you. As more than a friend. And I totally understand if you don’t feel the same way as me, but I thought it’d be good to tell you anyway, even though that is absolutely terrifyi-”
Izuku was interrupted by Ochaco pulled his face closer and kissed him. The action shocked him, but he soon melted into the kiss. Kissing her felt so right, like it was always meant to be.
When they pulled apart, they both smiled sweetly at each other.
“Izuku, I have loved you since our first year. I thought if anything, you’d be the one who didn’t like me back,” Ochaco chuckled slightly. “Honestly, I’m questioning if I’m dreaming right now.”
“Maybe I’m the one who’s dreaming.” Ochaco made eye contact with him and saw nothing but pure love and happiness in his emerald eyes. Something that her dreams never did justice to. She pinched herself, just to make sure.
Izuku chuckled at her antics and ended up copying her and pinching himself, too. Then his hand found her cheek, and she leaned into the touch.
“Not a dream,” they both decided.
“Since this isn’t a dream, can I ask a question?” Izuku asked.
“Yeah, what is it?”
“Ochacho, will you be my girlfriend?”
Ochaco smiled. “I thought you’d never ask.” She leaned in and kissed Izuku again.
When they pulled apart, Izuku asked one more thing, “I’m assuming that means yes?”
“Of course it does.”
Their moment was interrupted by the chanting of numbers downstairs, the class counting down from 20. Izuku and Ochaco headed down, joining the countdown.
Everyone else was too busy to notice the two’s hands intertwined with each other.
