Work Text:

It’s not often that Denki gets to team up with his two best bros now that everyone in 3A is gearing up for graduation.

So when a local museum gets a threatening letter promising a villain attack of devastating proportions between the hours of twelve and two, Denki practically leaps at the chance to yoink the two of them into joining him on the stakeout.

Their job as not yet graduated hero trainees is simple. Keep watch, keep calm, and alert the authorities if a villain actually does show up.

Between the three of them they’ve got more than enough power to hold off the villain until the pros arrive. And maybe even stop the attack entirely depending on the firepower of said villain.

And if it’s just a false alarm, they aren’t actual pros yet to have been distracted from a real villain attack by it. Wins all around!

Especially for Denki who is ecstatic at getting to hang with his friends while in costume. Their first official team up as heroes!— even if it is just as trainees.

The three of them are mostly chilling on the roof, a radio set to the museum worker’s frequency clipped to Todoroki’s belt. For now they’re simply laying low and keeping an eye on everyone that comes and goes through the main entrance below them. But Denki knows that his friends, like him, are ready to go at a moment's notice the second anything goes wrong.

And goes wrong it does.

While they were assigned to keep watch all night and day, given that the creators of the threat didn’t bother indicating if the attack was in the A.M. or P.M., the attack thankfully happened at night simply so that they didn’t have to sit around for another 10 hours for the second time slot.

It also helped that there were no civilians present to protect while they worked to distract and possibly take down the villains.

It all started with a simple static buzz of the radio, an indication that someone is on the line. Nothing ever came through, though.

Then it’s a half-spoken word that Denki could barely hear through the choppy speakers.

The three of them are immediately on high alert. It’s not just about the eeriness of them hiding up on the roof while faint words come through the speaker, it’s simply the fact that they aren’t able to call for backup or for the pros to arrive until they confirm it is indeed a villain and that action needs to be taken.

There’s a slight drizzle already beginning to soak them all, but Todoroki’s fire side is able to keep them mostly warm for the time being.

The trio quickly begins their ascent downwards, Todoroki creating towers of ice and Sero grabbing them both to swing down spider-man style.

Their ability to all work as a team is certainly one of 3-A’s best assets when sent out together. They’d fought in a war together, after all. A couple villains were more often than not simply light work.

Denki leads the charge to bring them inside, using the key given to him by the museum director for the express purpose of investigating possible disturbances without setting off the alarm.

Until of course, the alarm goes off just after they enter.

Very convenient, really. Now they just had to deal with the alarm blaring horrifically loudly in their ears while they actually did their job.

He can’t see any of the villains yet, but the ping from HeroNet on his phone indicates that the alarms were tripped on the top floor, so up they went.

Denki is already regretting actually entering the building.

Seriously, why were there 7 floors for him to climb?

Todoroki zooms past on his self made floor of ice and Sero swings high and…

“That’s okay guys,” Denki huffs, dragging himself up flight after flight and forcing himself to continue forward on every single step. “You go on ahead, I’ll catch up.”

There is no response from his buddies as they have long left Denki behind in their dust and he sighs to himself with the air of a jilted date that got stood up, and slowly continues his climb.

At last he manages to reach the top floor and the sight that greets him is one of sheer chaos.

Shattered glass from every single one of the windows having blown open already litters the ground and crunches audibly beneath Denki’s feet. Chairs and tables have been overturned, though thankfully that’s all the museum keeps up here since it’s mostly a space they use for visiting school tours to eat their lunch in.

And there, in the center of the room, with his hands raised dramatically and his cape billowing in the harsh storm winds coming through the busted windows, is the villain.

“Hehehe,” he cackles, snapping his fingers and sending a shockwave through the air that shatters the skylight above him. “You weren’t expecting me to attack tonight were you?”

Denki looks at Todoroki. Todoroki looks at Sero. Sero looks at Denki.

Immediately all three of them answer at once.

“Nooooo,” Sero drawls sarcastically. “We just live here, actually.”

“Clearly we were prepared.” Todoroki says, frowning in open confusion. “You sent a note.”

“What were you doing at the devil’s sacrament,” Denki mumbles under his breath.

“Stunned speechless I see!” The villain cackles, throwing his arms wide. “For you see I am the terrible, the mighty, the powerful—“

His next words are drowned out by a loud boom of thunder.

The rain starts pouring down in sheets, water coming in through the shattered skylight to soak down onto the villain below.

His cape rustles heavily now as lightning flares behind him.  He absently shakes the water out of his hair and starts again. “I said! I am the great and terrible—“

BOOM.

The sky doesn’t seem particularly likely to give him a break.

The villain tries once more. “I am the great-”

The sky booms so loudly that Denki is barely able to hear himself think.

“I am-”

BOOM.

Yeah. This guy wasn’t going to get anywhere today.

The villain just sighs and shakes his head.

Under their feet, the ground begins to shake dramatically, slowly splintering. They need to end this quickly for the safety of the artifacts in the museum.

Denki quickly sends off a notification to the other heroes in the area that there was a confirmed villain at the scene.

It’s about all he can do and he feels particularly useless, but he can’t exactly use his quirk without shocking both himself and his teammates. He was really just not built to be an outdoors hero. He was better suited for indoor fights where, sans a villain with a water related quirk, he wouldn’t get wet.

Unless the rain were to suddenly stop and he were to dry off, Denki is essentially useless. Given that it’s the middle of the night and they’re all just a bit sleepy, there’s no civilians to protect but thanks to the great and terrible nameless villain over here blowing out all the windows, the entire floor is now wet with rainwater.

If Denki so much as sneezes out a single spark, he’ll not only render himself stupid when the puddle he’s standing in conducts it right back at himself, but since Todoroki and Sero are also standing on wet floor he’s gonna zap them too.

And probably bring lightning down on top of them.

Oh.

That’s probably why the storm keeps thundering in this vicinity.

Damn now Denki kind of feels bad. Not bad enough to let the villain off the hook but still. He could at least learn the poor sap’s name before they all kick his ass.

Across the room from them Todoroki tilts his head at the villain. “Your quirk… does it only work when you clap or snap because the shockwaves are generated by your own skin on skin contact? Or would it work if anything else touched you as well?”

Denki frowns. Why is Todoroki asking questions right now?

The villain full on cackles. “Haha! So you’ve fallen into my trap! Indeed! My glorious quirk shall activate if any of you heroes so much as touches me! The harder the punch, the more your own dice shall bring the building down!”

Denki continues staring at Todoroki. Is he… stalling? For what? Denki only just requested backup. There’s no way anyone is close enough to—

Denki is suddenly yoinked into the air by a strip of Sero’s tape, the boy in question already hanging from the ceiling. “Now Frostfyre!”

“Weren’t you listening? You can’t—“

And that’s as far as the villain gets before Todoroki steps his right foot firmly on the ground and freezes him in place.

“Fucking A Todorok!” Sero cheers, lowering himself and Denki back down.

Despite the sudden chill in the already stormy air Denki can’t help but agree.

“Yeah man that was really… cool!” and Denki flashes them a pair of fingerguns as the two of them groan at him in unison.
