UNDERTALE: Eleven Years Since 201x

Summary:

This is a retelling of my current non-blind playthrough of UNDERTALE, told through the perspective of Amy (Chara) and Frisk, happening eleven years late since the release of the game.

Notes:

I know everything about this game via gameplays of others, but still decided to do a play it myself anyways right before the discount ended. I have decided to develop headcanons for Frisk and Chara using actual gameplay experience.
There is also an alternate version of this that is just regular documentation without adapting, and it can be read here: https://www.quotev.com/story/17396640/UNDERTALE-Gameplay/1

"Amy" is the name I gave to Chara.

Chapter 1: Fallen Down

Chapter Text

I cannot remember for how long I was unconscious. The dream that I had while being paralyzed stretched out for what seemed like nine years, or ninety nine years. Incomprehensible memories, all chaotic and cluttered, flashed before me like footage from a broken TV, flickering with static once in every few moments. Some of them were comforting or exciting, with warm colors and echoes of laughter. But the others were distressing. Screaming, crying, painful memories. Panicked shouting towards each other. Golden flowers. Sunset. Guns and bullets. Darkness. Pain. Running, I kept running. Escape no matter what. Go, go, as far as I could. Then I tripped, and fell, down into an endless pit. Did I die? Was that why I couldn’t move my body, and why I felt my consciousness drifting further away? No, no! I have to live!

That was when I heard it. Staring at what remains of the sky above through the pit, the brightness of the sun burned away every last part of my surroundings. I heard a voice calling, shouting at my name ——

Amy

I woke up on a bed of golden flowers. The voice still lingered, echoing at the back of my head as I jolted forwards and stood up. I looked around at my surroundings. I was deep underground in a dark trench with slivers of sunlight reaching out from above. Staring at the sky, I tried to recall what brought me to this place. I vaguely remember something about falling down a cave before waking up, but something about those scrambled memories felt… odd. Like they didn’t belong to me, or didn’t match with my current situation. The golden flowers - the ones that must had broken my fall - seemed strangely familiar, but my efforts to retrieve related memories always got blocked away, like there was a wall stopping me. I tried to remember my life before falling down. But nothing happened. There wasn’t much that I can remember about myself, except for my name.

“Amy”

Despite my confusion, I decided that I should find a way out of here first. There was one path ahead, so I followed it and saw that what it lead to. Atop the two grey pillars on both sides was an arch with familiar symbols carved onto it. Oh! I recognize this. The dam blocking my past cracked opened just a bit, letting out a steam of memories. This was the symbol of a prophecy, one that the monsters sealed below the barrier believed was the final hope to freedom. Ah, now I remember. This was the Underground. This was my home. That’s why the memories didn’t make sense: I had already fallen down here once before, so how was I back here again?

But I suppose that the mystery can wait. After walking though the pillars and arch, I was greeted by a dark room with a single golden flower blooming. I approached it, and to my surprise, it spoke to me.

“Howdy!”

I jumped back as the flower smiled and spoke again, “I’m Flowey. Flowey the flower!”

Although monsters come in many sizes and forms, I was fairly certain that there were never any monsters that resembled flowers. Confused, I cautiously approached Flowey, curious but feeling like I shouldn’t ask.

“Hmm… You’re new to the Underground, aren’tcha?”

Well, not quite. But it would be impossible to explain when I myself didn’t understand what was going on. So, I simply nodded.

“Golly, you must be so confused. Someone ought to teach you how things work around here! I guess little old me will have to do. Ready? Here we go!”

All colors quickly vanished from my surroundings, leaving only a strange void of black and white. I gasped. This was something that I had never experienced, before or after waking up. My eyes were drawn to a familiar-looking red, heart shaped object contained within a white box, moving in sync with my thoughts. I looked to the now monochromatic Flowey, asking for answers.

“See that red heart?” he asked, and I nodded, “That is your SOUL, the very culmination of your being! Your SOUL starts off weak, but can grow strong if you gain a lot of LV.”

What does LV stand for?

“Why, LOVE, of course!”

Something didn’t feel right about that explanation, but I was in no condition to question it.

“You want some LOVE, don’t you? Don’t worry, I’ll share them with you!”

Flowey then summoned several white “friendliness pellets” and explained that they were useful for trading LOVE. An uncomfortable feeling began to crawl up my spine. I quickly moved my SOUL and dodged all of them as I tried to find the source of this discomfort. The flower looked annoyed and tried again. I dodged once more as this sense of panic only grew stronger. Memories started to come back.

Dusk. People. Countless injuries. Falling down. Guns. Countless guns aiming at me and -

“Is this a joke?” Flowey finally snapped, “Are you braindead? RUN. INTO. THE. BULLE-”

We stared at each other as the truth finally revealed itself.

Bullets. The things he was shooting towards me… were bullets.

Seeing that I had understood everything, Flowey quickly dropped his facade. I was immediately surrounded by a ring of undodgeable bullets as he began to laugh maniacally. Helpless and alone, I braced myself for the incoming doom. Suddenly, a fireball came from nowhere and crashed right into the flower, and he was sent flying into the air. I was saved. As I turned to see who helped me, I gasped. It’s HER! My -

No. Why does this feel so strange? As if the part of me that recognized her was broken, leaving me with memories without feelings. Strangely, it did not feel right for me to call her mother in this state. What has happened to me? Then, another realization had came. There was another presence in this body, one that was silent until now and who did not recognize Toriel at all.

You.

It’s you.

Frisk

They finally noticed me.

My body was partially controlled by them ever since I woke up, and now, we shared equal confusion of how that came to be. They seemed to also have a life before this, but their memories seemed to be damaged in some way, causing them to not even notice that this body isn’t even theirs to begin with. They seemed to have a lot more knowledge about this Underground, and according to them, the monster that just saved us was their adoptive mother.

She introduced herself, and her name was indeed Toriel like the voice in my head has told me. Toriel told us that this place was the Ruins, and that she would guide us through here. One thing I noticed was that she said that I was “the first human to fall down here in a long time”, so it was possible that the voice was one of the previous humans that had fallen down. But in that case, how did they end up here in my body? And what happened to the others?

We followed Toriel into the next room, with two flight of stairs leading to the platform above. Between them was a strange source of light that the two of us could see but Toriel didn’t seem to notice. Curiously, I approached it carefully. As soon as my fingers touched the golden light, the other human started to speak in a strange manner, attempting to act as a narrator of some sort.

“The shadow of the ruins loom above you, filling you with determination.”

“HP fully restored.”
