Chapter Text
Lucas and David were friends. Really good friends, actually. Despite their occasional disagreements or spats over their adopted child, they always managed to get along in the end. For the most part, their friendship was easy.
David was loud, impulsive, prone to stripping down to his boxers randomly. Lucas was a little calmer, a little more level-headed, and often found himself cleaning up whatever mess David had accidentally created.
It was a balance that somehow worked. Most days, Lucas didn't mind David's antics. But there was one habit David had that drove him absolutely insane.
The coat.
More specifically, David's constant need to hand his Coat to Lucas whenever he was about to do something stupid. It happened so often that Lucas could practically predict it.
Someone insulted David?
"Lucas! Hold my coat!"
Someone challenged him?
"Lucas! Hold my coat!"
Someone looked at him the wrong way?
"Lucas! Hold my coat!"
Every single time, David would dramatically shrug off his coat, shove it into Lucas's arms, and storm off to deal with whatever problem had offended him that day. Lucas had become so accustomed to it that he'd automatically catch the coat whenever it came flying toward him.
At one point, another guild member had joked that Lucas was less David's friend and more his personal coat rack. David had laughed. Lucas had rolled his eyes. Normally, Lucas would grumble about it and move on.
Recently, however...
Recently, it had become a problem. Because somewhere along the way, something had changed.
Lucas wasn't exactly sure when it had happened. Maybe it had been gradual, sneaking up on him over weeks and months until one day he woke up and realized things felt different.
Today he'd absentmindedly rested it over his shoulders while waiting for David to finish another completely unnecessary fight.
It was warm. Comfortably warm. Warmer than his own jacket. The fabric was softer than it looked. Really soft, actually.
And...
It smelled like David.
Comforting.
Lucas had immediately shoved the thought out of his head. It's just a coat. That was all.
Just a coat.
