A Heart Matter

Summary:

Epilogue to Freedom Dive, Lace has still yet to get her original heart back, will she?

Notes:

lowkey, you don't need to have read freedom dive to understand what happens here, this is just a fun little extension to the end of that story

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“How’d ya give back my heart anyways?” Lace questioned Hornet. Hornet stopped writing her journal. “Like? When I passed out in the Cradle, I felt it expel from my chest. But when you passed out in the Diving Bell, no heart!”

Hornet turned toward Lace, she gazed back at Hornet from the bed. She laid there so happy and carefree, it was almost as if it was her own bed she commandeered. Alas, Hornet had proposed it, so she can’t complain.

“I still have your original heart. I created a new one for you.”

“Created.?” Mother must have made her somehow...

Hornet lifted her cloak up, which Lace was not ready for, Hornet seemed a little too calm about it in her opinion. Hornet turned her back to Lace and pointed out a short scar on her back alongside her spinnerets.

“I had used one of my own spinnerets to make it function. I’m unsure if the other ones function this way, but something is required to mold the silk actively.”

She used herself? So then, in Lace right now, is Hornet. Then before that, someone else. Weaver transports into Pharloom. Oh. Ohh.

Hornet had put her cloak back down and turned around, but Lace was unmoving, expression filled with confusion and contemplation.

“I cannot promise it, but do you want your original heart back?” Hornet asked tentatively.

Lace realized something was being asked of her and stopped thinking. “Uhhhhhmm…?” Wait, no, that’s a ridiculous answer, the right one is obvious. “Actually. Come sit next to me for a moment.”

Hornet got up to sit on the bed with Lace. Lace looked up at her so curiously, something was afoot.

“You actually think I want it back?” Lace said with a giggle.

“I would guess, yes?” Hornet herself was made unsure.

Lace just looked at her smiling, “It’s cute isn’t it? You have my heart. I have yours. Surely you feel that way?”

“It isn’t mine to keep. I get it, but, if you’re just thinking of me, that isn’t fair.”

“Well.” Lace got up next to Hornet. “I’d like to keep it that way for a time. You’re apart of me? How sickeningly sweet! Oh, I feel it beat. That’s you. Oh it’s you again.” Lace couldn’t hold back her laughter. “Aaaaaaaah… stay with me here won’t you? Wait. You’re already here!”

Lace is laughing and she’s just sitting there, “Then this is.. your real desire?”

“Yes you imbecile! C’mere!” Lace grabbed Hornet and fell back on the bed together.

“You’re such a stick up. Lighten up for me like you did when I first woke up. It’s fun! You haven’t thought any deeper about my heart being in you? Do it! I don’t care!” Lace tugged on Hornet, “But I’m right here, just to remind you, in case you feel anything. Anything.”

Just like usual, Lace teases her, and then she's red, and her heart beats. Or… Lace’s heart… that sneaky bug. She needed some payback.

“Any feeling? Then I guess you’re quite cute.”

“Hm?”

“I don’t know if the heart is enough for me. I need the real thing right here. You’re quite cute. I can’t say that to an organ. Stay with me.”

“Uh, okay…” Some of Lace wanted to move, her body was hot.

“Like that response, it’s so cute. I love how fluffy you are. It’s a marvelous trait. You’re especially cute with your hair down.”

“Thanks…” Lace was too twisted to respond with tease. Her legs wanted to curl together.

“That’s all.” Hornet stepped out of the bed and returned to her journal.

That’s all? That spider.. that spider oh.. it’s not over. Come back here and let Lace hold you. Her heart beat ferociously. That’s Hornet’s. Agh!

Lace dragged covers over head and curled up.

Notes:

Would Lace actually want her heart back? After writing Freedom Dive, I concluded "no". A little bit fluffier than I expected, but it's fun.
