Work Text:
Yukiko had been acting strangely.
Yusaku never actually found a reason to monitor what his wife was doing. She was a free spirit, and he had promised her that marriage would never shackle her. So when she did go out for her excursions, Yusaku only ever asked that she at least tell him when she'll be back.
And yet, she seemed to be hiding something from him.
She would leave at strange hours then sneak back home and insist she hadn't left at all, and stopped going out during the middle of the day. She also refused to go on dinner dates with him, which was something they had done every week.
Now, Yusaku wasn't a jealous nor suspicious man. He knew his wife was trustworthy and would never do something drastic like have an affair, but he simply couldn't get behind how odd this made him feel.
It all came to a head when after five weeks of strange behavior, Yukiko stopped being affectionate with him. Where she often smothered him with hugs and kisses, now she was distant.
Ah, this is the end of my marriage.
Yusaku sat in his study, wondering what he had done to push her away like this. Was he not affectionate enough? Was he too clingy? Was she bored of being married to a simple novel writer?
He pinched his brow, feeling the stress swirl up inside his gut. He glanced at the clock, seeing that it was already past midnight.
"...
"I should go to bed."
Yusaku stood, walking over to and opening the study door, coming face to face with Yukiko who also seemed to have been reaching for the doorknob.
"Y-Yu-chan!" She gasped, quickly hiding a manila envelope behind her back. "I was just... You see, I came home and I wanted to read a book, but I-"
Those must be the divorce papers. She was going to leave them in here instead of handing them to me directly.
He held out his hand, saying nothing. As if scolded, Yukiko slowly handed him the envelope and averted her eyes.
I'll just read them, and then do what I can to change her mind. Yusaku opened the envelope and pulled out the... photo? Photo??
He glanced at it, seeing a familiar black and white spread.
"This is... an ultrasound."
Yukiko nodded softly.
"With your name on it."
Another nod.
"...
"Wait, you're—?!"
Yukiko gently tapped her index fingers together, blushing. "I hadn't been feeling well, so I went to the gynecologist.
"6 weeks, they said! But I wanted to be 100% sure before I told you.
"I asked a doctor friend to do another ultrasound today, and then decided to leave the picture on your desk because I thought you'd be asleep."
All this time, she wasn't sneaking around with the intent to leave him. Her behavior suddenly made complete sense; going out at strange hours for doctor's appointments, refusing to go out for dinner due to morning sickness and her new sensitivity to certain foods, even the lack of affection could be attributed to it as well.
The relief washed over him and his legs gave out, causing Yukiko to quickly kneel down with him.
"Y-Yu-chan?!"
"I'm so happy... I thought you were going to divorce me..."
"Awh, yo- Wait, you thought WHAT?!"
—
The first people they told were the twins.
"Gross, I don't want to think about my old parents still being sexually active." Shinichi groaned, earning a whack upside the head from Yukiko.
"Who are you calling old, huh!?"
"We spent all that time talking about Conan being our third brother, and now it seems like that's gonna be a reality soon." Kaito leant over the edge of the couch.
"Mn, mn! Or maybe it's a girl! Oh, a girl would be soooo cute! I hope she has my hair!"
Kaito couldn't help the nervous chuckle he let out.
She does know that, girl or boy, the baby is gonna be identical to Dad and us, right?
—
When they had told people who weren't aware that Conan and Shinichi were in fact the same person, they got the same response each time.
Don't you mean this will be your fourth child?
"Oi, Yu-chan..." Yukiko seethed, looking annoyed after the 5th similar response. "Do you think we made a mistake saying that Conan-kun was our third son?"
Yusaku thought about it for a few seconds, before shrugging in amusement. "Perhaps.
"But you still look just as beautiful despite having three children with one on the way!" He'd intended to cheer her up, but was startled to see how her mood only got worse.
"Oi, we didn't actually have Conan, you know!"
"A-ah, right-"
—
Now that Yusaku knew, he insisted on going with Yukiko to every doctor’s appointment.
Since she was only trying to confirm that she was actually pregnant, she hadn’t actually done any proper appointments or ultrasounds. So now that she was past the 8 week mark, that meant this was the best time to confirm with a proper ultrasound.
“Oh, I hope we have a girl this time… Not that I don’t mind another boy, but I’d be severely outnumbered!” Yukiko said as the doctor prepared the sonogram and transducer.
“Well, we’ll have to wait to see the gender. At least for now we need to see if everything is okay.”
“Alright, here we go,” the doctor poured some warmed gel on Yukiko’s abdomen and gently placed the transducer on the skin, slowly rotating it around the small bump to check the uterus. “Let’s see here…
“Okay, there’s the little one! It’s around the end of week 8 of the first trimester, but everything is looking good so far!
“What a cute little- Oh my…”
“What, what does ‘Oh my’ mean, is there something wrong??” Yukiko sat up a bit, but was quickly waved off by the doctor.
“There’s nothing wrong! But what a surprise!”
“What’s the surprise?” Yusaku looked at the sonogram, adjusting his glasses as if it would help him see the situation better. He noticed something familiar, but didn’t really see what the doctor was hinting at.
“Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Kudo! You’re having twins!”
