The Last City was collapsing around the two teenagers, fire engulfed the buildings surrounding them, yet Thomas could only focus on the person in front of him, Newt. Thomas being his stubborn self wasn’t willing to give up on Newt, not yet. So it hit hard when Newt pled Thomas to take his necklace, because that signified Newt accepting his fate, a fate that Thomas didn’t want to accept.
Now Thomas waits for the serum as he continues to carry—more like drag Newt across the Last City as the dangerous fire and riots prolong.
And even when Newt collapses Thomas still doesn’t give up, he persists on being stubborn, and finally starts dragging Newt’s limp body across concrete, until he himself collapses as well.
Throughout the city Teresa’s voice can be heard trying to convince Thomas to go back to WICKED to save Newt. As Thomas starts to tear up with his back towards Newt, the street lights around him diminish, making the street darker. The boy savior looks back to check on Newt only to find that his best friend has risen to his feet.
But the moment he calls his best friend, Newt turns back to stare at Thomas with soulless eyes before lunging at him. The two teenagers fight on the concrete, Newt is clearly too far gone but Thomas doesn’t give up, he can’t give up on the boy he loves.
“Tommy, kill me!” Newt says desperately right before losing control and lunging at Thomas once more.
“Choose your last words, this is the last time
'Cause you and I, we were born to die
We were born to die”
Newt is still straddling Thomas when he says, “I‘m sorry Tom—I’m sorry Tommy.” Thomas looks at Newt with despair and tears in his eyes as he reassures Newt that it’s okay. Newt then grabs the gun from his holster and points it to his temple, but right as he is about to pull the trigger Thomas slaps it away and it slides on the concrete, making Newt lose control due to his anger.
Once Thomas pushes Newt off of him, the dirty blond reaches into his back pocket and takes out a knife which he then swipes at Thomas. Newt doesn’t want this, but he can’t control the virus that has already ate away at him, he doesn’t want to fight the boy he loves, let alone accidentally kill him, but unfortunately he isn’t the one in control, the crank is.
The crank plunges the knife towards the immune boy’s chest however with no luck as Thomas is able to stop it from digging further into his flesh and eventually his heart.
The two teenagers roll on the street once more before getting up to their feet. The knife is swinging at Thomas fiercely, and Thomas thinks, ‘this is how I’m going to die, at the hands of the boy I love.’
And right as Thomas braces himself for impact and impending pain, Newt turns the knife onto himself, digging it into his own heart. Newt was able to gain back control the moment he realized his crank was about to kill the boy he loved. Newt turned the knife towards himself for two reasons, to save Thomas, and because he didn’t want to continue his life as an anger ridden crank.
When Thomas realizes his face pales…his subconscious always knew that he and Newt were born to die…
