Summary:

There are many ways to say "I love you"

Graf knows them all

The only problem is that Juan never hears any of them

Chapter 1: A Thousand Ways to Say I love you

Chapter Text

They say...

Love does not always need to be spoken aloud.
At least, that was what Graf tried to tell himself every day.

Because if love was measured only by words...

Then perhaps...

He had already lost from the very beginning.

Juan had always been kind.
And that was what made everything harder.

If Juan had been more cruel...
If Juan had pushed him away...
If Juan had told him that his feelings meant nothing...

Perhaps Graf would have been able to let go more easily.

But Juan never did that.

Juan smiled at him.
He listened.
He remembered the smallest things about him.
Juan cared.

Only...

It was never the kind of love Graf's heart had been yearning for.

And sometimes...

Receiving someone's gentleness,
but never being able to receive that same love in return,
hurt far more than being rejected ever could.

Graf knew the difference.

Between someone loving you...
And someone simply caring for you.

And Juan...

Juan cared for him so deeply.

Only...

Juan's heart had never been in the same place as his.

There were many times when Graf wondered...

Did Juan know?

Not because he had ever said it.
Not because he had confessed again and again.

But because sometimes...

Feelings too great to hide
always found their way out through the smallest things.

Through the way his eyes followed Juan whenever Juan wasn't looking.
Through the little excuses he made just to stay by his side a little longer.
Through the way his voice softened every time he said Juan's name.

Maybe Juan knew.

Maybe he didn't.

Graf never asked.

Because some answers...

Were simply too painful for the heart to bear.

Juan sat not far away,
completely focused on what was in front of him.

Unaware that someone was watching him.

Graf looked at him quietly.

Looking at the person who had given meaning to his ordinary days.

Someone who never tried to do anything extraordinary...
Yet somehow became the most important person in his life.

Graf smiled faintly.

Then he let a whisper disappear into the air.

"Te amo..."

I love you.

Spanish.

A warm phrase.

Like an embrace he had never been able to give.

Juan did not turn around.

And perhaps...

That was better this way.

Because if Juan heard him...

Graf did not know if he could still pretend that nothing had happened.

When Juan was not listening,
Graf allowed himself to say everything he kept hidden inside.

In every language he knew.

"Je t'aime..."

French.

Gentle like a flower carefully preserved between the pages of a book.

"Ich liebe dich..."

German.

Steady and unwavering like the roots of a tree.

A love that remained,
even when no one could see it.

And finally...

"我爱你..."

Wǒ ài nǐ.

I love you.

Chinese.

Those words felt different.

Not because they meant more.

But because they carried the most fragile parts of him.

The softer parts.

The parts he rarely allowed anyone else to see.

Graf said it once more.

Quieter than before.

Almost as if he was afraid the feeling itself would become too loud.

"我爱你..."

But Juan did not hear.

Sometimes Graf wondered...

Was it strange?

To love someone without expecting anything in return.

To keep a feeling locked inside his heart,
even while knowing it had nowhere to go.

But whenever he thought of Juan...
he understood.

Juan had never given him false hope.

Juan had never deceived him.

Juan had always been honest with his own heart.

And that was why Graf continued to respect him.

Because even if the truth hurt...

Juan was still someone beautiful.

Someone worthy of being loved.

One night...

Graf found Juan sitting quietly.

For a brief moment,
the entire world seemed to fall silent.

And for the first time, he thought...

Maybe today...

Maybe today I will finally say it.

But then Juan looked up.

And gave him that gentle smile.

"Are you okay?"

Just a simple question.

Yet somehow...

It made Graf's heart tremble.

He wanted to answer.

He wanted to say:

"No."

"I have never been okay."

"Because every time you ask if I am alright..."

"I want to tell you that I love you."

But the words stayed trapped behind his lips.

Because what good would they do?

What would happen if he finally let everything spill out?

Would Juan look at him differently?

Would that gentle smile disappear?

Would the precious bond they had built become something they could no longer return to?

Graf could not risk losing even the smallest piece of Juan.

So in the end...

Graf only smiled.

And replied:

"I'm okay."

The gentlest lie he had ever told.

Juan never knew.

He never knew how many times he had been loved.

He never knew how many times Graf whispered those words when he wasn't listening.

One language after another.

One confession after another.

Just so Graf's heart could say what his lips never dared to.

Juan never knew that...

Every "I love you"
was a farewell Graf had practiced long before the day he truly had to say goodbye.

Every whispered confession.

Every silent glance.

Every moment Graf chose to stay.

They were all pieces of a goodbye he never knew he was preparing for.

And then...

The day Juan was no longer there arrived.

The entire world became quiet.

Too quiet.

The kind of silence that felt heavier than any sound.

Graf remembered everything.

Every conversation.

Every laugh.

Every moment Juan had existed beside him.

Every small kindness that Graf had once thought he would have forever.

And then came the most painful thought of all.

He never heard me.

Not once.

Not truly.

But perhaps...

Perhaps Juan did know.

Not through words.

Not through languages.

But through everything Graf had done.

Through the way he stayed.

Through the way he cared.

Through the way his eyes softened whenever he looked at Juan.

Some kinds of love...

Do not need to be spoken.

Because they have already been passed on.

After that...

Graf continued to say those words.

On quiet nights.

In moments when there was no one beside him.

English.

Spanish.

French.

German.

Chinese.

Every language he knew.

Every language his heart could reach.

"I love you."

Not because he was waiting for an answer.

Not because he hoped Juan would return.

But because loving Juan...

became another way of remembering him.

A way of keeping alive the moments they shared.

A way of thanking him for the kindness he had given.

A way of saying:

You mattered.

You were loved.

You were someone worth choosing.

Because in the end...

Graf's love was never about possessing him.

It was never about making Juan belong to him.

It was never about asking for something Juan could not give.

It was about gratitude.

Gratitude that once...

He had the chance to meet someone as beautiful as Juan.

Someone who made ordinary days brighter.

Someone who reminded him that kindness still existed in a world that could be so cruel.

And even if two flowers were never meant to bloom in the same garden...

Even if their roots grew in different places.

Even if their seasons were never meant to last forever.

Juan would always remain...

The most beautiful flower
Graf had ever been fortunate enough to see.

And perhaps, somewhere beyond the distance between them...

Juan finally heard.

Not the words.

Not the languages.

But the love that had always been hidden behind them.

The love that never asked to be returned.

The love that only wanted him to know:

"Thank you for letting me know you."

"Thank you for being someone I could love."

"Thank you for being my flower."

Author's Note:

Graf never said “Kocham cię” because he had thought that one day he will finally get to say it at the perfect place and perfect time.

Thank you for reading.
