Summary
Mike Wheeler is in love with Will Byers, but it’s the kind of love that takes bravery that Mike simply does not possess, and doesn’t believe he ever will.
Mike only knows how to hide - from the people he loves most, from his feelings, from himself. He hides behind his relationship with El; he knows he pretends she’s someone else.
She’s going away to study abroad, and she wants more for herself than a relationship with someone who doesn’t even know her favorite color.
In a mindless and pathetic plea, Mike professes to El that she is the best thing that’s ever happened to him, despite the pain and suffering Will had to go through in order for their paths to cross.
Will overhears this, and with a broken heart and severe desperation to get over Mike, he takes up on his scholarship from NYU (that mike is unaware of) and makes everyone around them promise not to tell Mike where he’s going.
After all, hasn’t Will has always been great at hiding?
Four years later in 1993, Mike finds out where Will has been hiding from him and will do anything in his power to beg and plea for will to be back by his side.
Except Will Byers has moved on with someone new.
