Tryna say live, live and let live
I'm no good, good at lip service
Except when they're yours, mi amour
-Irresistible- Fall Out Boy
Remus hated parties. They were only fun once you got drunk and lost your inhibitions, and he made a point to stay relatively sober if he could. It was all couples, and Remus didn’t exactly date people very often. There was a reason for that of course, and that reason was currently on the far side of the room snogging a pretty girl with blond hair, which happened quite regularly, though the girl wasn’t always a blonde. Sirius Black, Remus’ best friend and longtime crush.
Remus sighs, he’ll lose his mind if he stays here and has to be acutely aware that the person he’s dead and gone on is making out with someone else whom that person probably doesn’t even know very well. He downs the last of his drink and sets it on a countertop then heads for the front door.
“Leaving so soon Remus?” His friend Lily asks from where she’s sitting on the couch with her girlfriend Mary. She looks a bit worried, like she knows something is off.
“No, I just need some air,” Remus says, desperate to escape the room that’s becoming more stifling by the minute. Lily nods.
“Okay, but James’ll be mad if you don’t show up later for that cake he spent forever making for Reg, you know how much he cares about that kind of thing,”
“Yeah, I won’t miss it, though I don’t know if he’d notice. Him and Reg disappeared a while ago and are probably making out in a closet or in James’ room, though hopefully they haven’t gone any farther, the cake should be cut before everyone’s too drunk to think straight,” Remus pulls the door open and slips outside, breathing in the cool night air. He sits down on the porch steps, his mind already wandering back to Sirius. Him and his stunning silver eyes and his long black hair. And, of course, the girl he’d been snogging. It wasn’t like Remus wasn’t used to Sirius kissing girls, he just hated it. Probably because he wished it was him Sirius was kissing. Stupid, really, and quite impossible. Sirius Black was as straight as they came, and even if he wasn’t, why would he ever be interested in someone like Remus? He had scars, wore old cardigans, and was, quite simply, a nerd.
The door creaks open, but Remus pays no mind until a voice asks, “Why’d you leave the party?” Of course, with his luck, it’s none other than Sirius Black himself.
“Why do you care? For that matter, how’d you even notice? Last I checked you were too busy shoving your tongue down that girl’s throat to notice anything else,” he snaps, glaring out at the street.
“Because you’re my friend Remus, and you matter more than a one night hookup,”
“Mhm,”
“You do! Why do you insist on believing you aren't worth anything?! You’re my closest friend!” Sirius says, rather loudly.
“Maybe I don’t want to be just your friend!” Remus nearly yells, then abruptly clamps his mouth shut. Oh shit.
“Wait, did you just say you don’t want to be just friends with me?”
“Yes! I like you, and not just as a friend. I’m kind of surprised you haven’t noticed yet actually,” Remus says rather bitterly.
“Moons, I like you too, and not just as friends either,”
“Yeah sure, the great Sirius Black likes me, Remus Lupin, romantically,” Remus snorts, sarcasm dripping from his words.
“Hey, Remus, look at me,” Sirius whispers. Remus does, surprised at the sincerity in Sirius’ gray eyes. “I, Sirius Black, am hopelessly in love with one Remus Lupin,” he leans in, “Now, Remus, may I kiss you?” Remus nods, slightly shocked by the events of the last couple minutes. He doesn’t have any time to recover though, because in the next second Sirius’ lips are pressed against his own. Remus buries his hands in Sirius’ hair, dragging him closer and deepening the kiss, causing Sirius to moan slightly against Remus’ mouth.
When they eventually pull away Remus leans his forehead against Sirius’ and whispers, “For the record, I, Remus Lupin, am hopelessly in love with one Sirius Black,” Sirius grins at that and pulls Remus into another kiss.

The two of them end up making out for a while, and only stop when Remus mumbles, “We should probably head back inside. James will kill us if we miss the cake,” Sirius nods, and stands up, offering a hand to Remus, who takes it and stands up too.
They head inside, and Lily looks up from her spot on the couch, “you two look like something definitely happened out there, so by any chance, are you two dimwits together now?” she says.
“Yep,” Sirius says, fingers entwined with Remus’, and leans against him.
“Finally!” Lily says, “I’ve been watching you two pine over each other for years!”
“Oh good, they’re together now,” Marlene mutters from where she’s leaning against the wall with her girlfriend Dorcas. “Now I don’t have to watch them be hopelessly oblivious dumbasses anymore,”
“Cake time!” James announces, coming out of the kitchen with a massive cake that reads: Happy Birthday Reg! Regulus blushes from where he’s standing near a table, and walks over to kiss his boyfriend on the cheek. Everyone grins and sings while Regulus slowly turns redder and redder as they go on.
After everyone has finished singing, they eagerly wait for cake because even though they are all basically adults, cake is always amazing.
They all end up laughing and chatting, and Remus grins at Sirius, who’s standing next to him with an arm around Remus’ waist. “I think this night turned out very well, don’t you think?” Sirius whispers in response to Remus’ grin.
“Yes, I think it turned out excellently," Remus whispers back, leaning against Sirius.
