Work Text:
Kayn grinned as he watched Ezreal down the last of his tea.
“Good tea?” Kayn asked.
“Yeah,” Ezreal said before doing a slight double take. “Why do you ask? You didn’t put something in it did you?”
“What? Me? I would never!”
“God it’s not laxatives again is it? We have dance practice later!”
“Why are you accusing me! Can I not just ask you how your tea is?”
“No! Of course you can’t! Also, you have that look.”
“What look?” Kayn asked.
“When you lie,” Ezreal said. “I can see your tell.” After the words left Ezreal’s mouth he frowned. He hadn’t meant to say that.
“I don’t have a tell!” Kayn said.
Ezreal rolled his eyes pointing a finger at Kayn. “Yeah you do. You tilt your head to the side and you smirk.”
“I do not!” But as Ezreal mentioned it Kayn straightened his head and got his smile under control.
“Well you obviously do,” Ezreal said. He put his fingers to his lips tentatively. He hadn’t meant to say any of that. Telling Kayn what his tells are was stupid. Now they wouldn’t be tells anymore!
It’s already working, Kayn thought. I’m gonna get so many embarrassing stories out of this.
“I was listening to your song the other day,” Kayn said. Ezreal stiffened. He hated whenever anyone brought up You’re My Museum. “Who’s it about?”
“Lux.” Ezreal clamped a hand over his mouth. He’d meant to say none of your business dipshit. What was up with him today?
Kayn broke out in laughter. “LUX?! Like, Lux the lesbian dating Jinx Lux?”
Ezreal scowled. “Yeah, Lux.”
“Oh that’s rich. Did you ever confess your feelings?” Kayn asked.
“Well yeah, but she didn’t even know who I was and I didn’t know she already had a girlfriend.” Ezreal slammed his hand on the counter as Kayn laughed harder. “That’s it! What did you put in my drink?”
“Nothing!” Kayn said with a laugh.
“I—” Ezreal was about to say I hate you but the words died on the tip of his tongue. At least he didn’t say anything more embarrassing.
“What were you going to say Ezzie?” Kayn asked.
“I love you.” Ezreal clamped a hand over his mouth.
Kayn stared at Ezreal with wide eyes. He had been anticipating Ezreal saying something more about how he was swooning for Lux back in high school, but he was not expecting those words to leave Ezreal’s mouth. He felt his heart hammer in his chest.
“You. . .”
“I love you,” Ezreal said, words slightly muffled by his hand. “Jesus Kayn what did you put in my drink?” Ezreal turned around and worried his bottom lip between his teeth. He felt like he was going to cry. Why was he telling Kayn all this?
“Uh. . . truth potion?” Kayn said dumbly.
Ezreal dug his nails into his palms. Oh, just great. So, Kayn knew he meant it. And obviously Kayn didn’t share feelings for him, so now Ezreal’s life was over. They couldn’t keep being bandmates if Kayn knew Ezreal was secretly in love with him. Well, not so secretly anymore.
“I. . . uh. . .” Ezreal was trying to say I didn’t really mean it but it was seeming rather impossible. “I’m an idiot,” he settles on instead. He storms off.
“Ez wait!” Kayn calls, reaching for Ezreal but Ezreal just goes right up the stairs and slams the door.
Kayn watched Ezreal leave with wide eyes. He swallowed. Ezreal loved him? His face was warm and his pulse was racing. He’d thought this would all just be some good fun. He’d get some embarrassing secrets out of Ezreal that he could hold over him and bring up whenever he felt like picking the movie for movie night. He hadn’t expected. . . that.
“What’s going on? Ezreal just slammed the door,” Yone, always hypervigilant asks, coming into the kitchen.
“Just me fucking everything up as per usual,” Kayn said.
“Ok? Should I go talk to him—”
“No,” Kayn says quickly. He doubts Ezreal wants anyone talking to him while he’s still under the effects of the truth potion.
“Then I expect you will fix whatever you did,” Yone says.
“Yeah, I’ll try,” Kayn says. He takes out the bottle of the leftover truth potion from his pocket. There’s more than enough for another dose. He was kind of hoping to use any extra on Sett or Aphelios. They would be fun to pull secrets from. But now that idea seemed absurdly stupid.
Would Ezreal believe him if he said he felt the same? He’d probably just think Kayn was trying to get something out of him. He sighed and grabbed a glass of water. He went up stairs and knocked on Ezreal’s door.
“Go away,” Ezreal muttered, weak through the door and it was followed by a loud sniffle. Kayn leaned his head on the doorframe. If only he and Ezreal could be normal about their feelings maybe this would have come to light in a more natural way. But knowing them it could have also not come to light at all.
“I have to tell you something,” Kayn said.
“Well I. . .” Ezreal’s words cut off and Kayn can fill in the rest of the sentence with an apparently untruthful I don’t want to hear it. Theres a shuffle from behind the door and then it opens, revealing a puffy red eyed Ezreal clutching a blanket around his shoulders like a cape.
“Hi,” Kayn says dumbly.
Ezreal just gestures for Kayn to come in. Ezreal plops himself down on his bed and Kayn sits next to him.
“What did you want to tell me?” Ezreal asks.
“Well I want you to believe me so. . .” Kayn holds out the glass of water and truth potion to Ezreal. Ezreal looks up at Kayn, skeptical. “It’s only fair,” Kayn says glancing away. He was nervous about this too.
Ezreal looked at the little vial of truth potion and dumped the whole thing into the glass of water.
“No that’s way too much!” Kayn said.
Ezreal just shrugged handing it back to Kayn. “Are you not gonna drink it?”
Kayn sighed and drank the glass down quickly. It tasted awful. That was the main side effect of drinking too much. A little was hardly detectable, a lot tasted like sour milk.
“So, you wanted to tell me something?” Ezreal asked.
“Yeah,” Kayn said. He fidgeted, running his thumb against a little chip in the glass. He felt so nervous. Why did he feel so nervous? He wanted to say it. He really did. But he’d never felt quite like this about anyone and he didn’t know how to put it into words.
Ezreal was watching expectantly, but as the moment dragged on for too long his face fell. He hugged a pillow close and buried his face in it. “If you want to turn me down just get it over with.”
“No. Ezreal no. That’s not,” Kayn took a breath. “I. . . love you too.”
Ezreal blushed, holding the pillow closer. “Yeah?”
“Yeah,” Kayn said. “And I’m sorry for the whole truth potion thing. I really did just want to pull some embarrassing stories from you. I didn’t expect anything else I swear.”
Ezreal finally smiled, unfurling from his ball a little and Kayn took the opportunity to learn forward and cup his cheek in his hand, rubbing his thumb over the tear tracks that stain Ezreal’s face.
“You can ask me anything you want.” Kayn said. “Fish embarrassing stories out of me that I’ll deny later but that you’ll know are true if you want. It’s only fair.”
Ezreal smiled, leaning into Kayn’s hand. “How long have you loved me?”
“Since high school.”
Ezreal snickered and Kayn blushed looking away and biting his tongue. That truth potion really did work.
“Wow a long time fan. Did you have any posters of me?”
“Still do. Why do you think I don’t let you into my room?”
Ezreal giggled shifting closer to Kayn. Kayn just blushed feeling embarrassed.
“And what’s your favorite feature of mine?”
“Everything,” Kayn said with awe. “Your looks made me fall in love with you first, and your voice. I love your voice. But I love everything about you Ez. Your freckles which you used to hide with makeup,” Kayn brushes his thumb over Ezreals cheeks. “Your crooked teeth, the way you laugh and the way you make me laugh.”
“I didn’t know you were such a romantic,” Ezreal says.
“Yeah well, me neither,” Kayn says.
“So. . . does this mean we’re boyfriends now?” Ezreal stared back into Kayn’s eyes, seeing the love there, the complete and utter adoration there, all of it for Ezreal.
“I’d like that.”
“Then. . . can I kiss you?”
“Fuck yes.” Kayn blushed, the truth potion picking up on his excitement. Not that even without the truth potion he would have ever said no to a kiss from Ezreal.
Ezreal smiled as his lips met Kayns. It was perfect.
They both pulled back from the kiss after a moment, grinning at each other.
“Ezreal, Kayn, is everything alright?” Yone said from beyond the door. “Usually your fight makeups involve a lot more yelling.”
“We’re fine!”
“What are you two doing in there?”
“Confessing our feelings,” Kayn says at the same time Ezreal says “Making out.”
There’s a long pause of silence between them and the door. “Ok then, I’ll leave you boys to it. I don’t want to hear any details later.”
Kayn and Ezreal both laugh.
“We better get back to it then,” Kayn says with a smirk, leaning forward slightly. “Don’t want to disappoint Yone after all.”
