You Can't Break a Shattered Heart

Summary:

No dragon is hatched inherently evil.

Scarlet used to be quite different, before her love was ripped away from her.

Pyrite, the real Pyrite, was lost in a battle before the SandWing Succession crisis. And ever since, Scarlet has never been the same.

The thing is... Princess Scarlet hates a lot quieter than she loves. And Queen Scarlet loves a lot quieter than she hates.

The story of Scarlet: a tragic tale of hate, love and loss.

Chapter Text

“You’re real lucky you’re pretty,” Sierra said idly, rubbing one of her scales.

“Why?” Scarlet asked, blinking wide eyes at her older sister. “You’re really pretty, too.”

“That’s why I’m lucky as well,” Sierra sighed, caressing Scarlet’s head softly. “Though not as beautiful as you, honeydrop.”

“Honeydrop,” Scarlet repeated, and giggled. She wriggled around under the blankets, trying to find a comfortable position. Sierra just looked on with mirth dancing in her eyes.

Eventually, Scarlet stopped, and sighed deeply. “Can you stay a little bit longer?”

“Of course,” Sierra smiled. “I’ll stay. In fact, why don’t we have a sleepover?”

“Yay!” Scarlet cheered. “You’re the best big sister ever.”

Sierra tried to snuggle closer, and realized she didn’t have any space. “You’re taking up the whole bed,” she accused.

“No, I’m not,” Scarlet replied innocently.

Sierra lifted a corner of the blanket to reveal Scarlet’s wings spread wide. “Hmm.”

Scarlet huffed and tucked in her wings. “Bedtime story?”

“Alright then.” Sierra closed Scarlet’s eyes as she sighed contentedly. “Once upon a time…”

Sierra wove a tale of a brave SkyWing princess who travelled from place to place saving young dragonets from being burned and eaten by an evil firescales. She was brave and strong, and with her friends, managed to slay the monster in the end.

When Sierra finished, Scarlet was shivering. “Oh!” Sierra hugged her, concerned. “I’m sorry if that was too scary, honeydrop. I can tell you another story if you’d like?”

“Are firescales real?” Scarlet asked quietly.

“Well…” Sierra hesitated. “Yes. But they don’t appear very often. Every hundred years or so.”

“What about the dragonet that was thrown in the river last week?” Scarlet demanded.

“He… was. But that’s why we don’t let them live, honeydrop. They can cause danger to our entire tribe. But don’t worry, I won’t let any firescales hurt you.”

“What about Mother?”

“Queen Firestorm?” Sierra corrected. “Don’t you worry. You’ll be… safe from her. Solstice says she’ll make sure of that.”

Scarlet mulled this over, staring wistfully at the ceiling, before murmuring sleepily, “The best sisters in Pyrrhia."

“You flatter me.” Sierra nuzzled the top of Scarlet’s head, cooing softly as Scarlet slowly drifted off to sleep.

“Sweet dreams, little honeydrop.”
