Chapter Text

your a barista who works closing shift at blackbriar cafe you have a few regulars that come in get their coffee and leave some linger liking the human connection late at night

it's been quiet tonight none of your usual regulars showing up tho that's not a surprise with how heavy the rain is coming down outside your wiping down the counter when the door swings open

"welcome to Blackbriar cafe how may i help you?" you plaster on your usual customer service smile watching the man approach, he has brown eyes and brown hair peppered with the occasional grey

"can you get me a black coffee three sugars please?" you nod and get to work brewing his drink it's a simple one so it doesn't take too long before your sliding it across to him "thanks doll"

you watch him as he takes a seat at the counter, you start turning off all the coffee machines getting ready for closing as he sits there and sips on his coffee you can't get mad at him like you usually would he looks a bit troubled so you scan him looking for ways to start conversation you spot a ring on his finger "how's your wife?"

he looks at you confused for a second before looking back down at his ring "oh no my husband, he's alright"

oh gay a bit of a surprise considering his age but it does warm your heart to see old gay people it's like a beacon of hope "cute, how did you two meet?"

he sits his coffee down and straightens up "it was during the war me and him served together, well i was captain of a task force he flew our heli a few nights together getting shot at by terrorists we decided to retire together and the rest was history"

ok he's opening up just a bit more prying and you'll know whats wrong "awww thats so cute, do you guys have any kids?"

"yea actually, three sons but uh i guess me and my husband are arguing because he wants a daughter now" the man rubs his head sipping the coffee

"is there any reason you don't want a daughter? i mean three kids is alot already are you perhaps unprepared for another?"

"no no thats not it, its just we knew all our kids before we adopted them, it would feel strange letting a stranger into our home"

"well have you told your husband this?"

"yes and he understands but it still hurts he still wants a daughter, there's nothing we can do other then wait for one to show up, we tend to be lucky"

sensing the end of that conversation you hum in response and continue wiping down the table until he decides to start it back up "what about you, why's a kid your age working so late"

you chuckle "yea yea i know baby face, but i'm not a kid im 19"

he waves a hand as if shooing away your defence "19 is still a kid, my god, and this city is crawling with filth i wouldn't let my grown kids wander here let alone a little girl"

you get ready to defend yourself but his phone begins to buzz and he holds up a finger to you as he picks the phone up you don't hear anything from the other end but you do hear his responses a series of 'yes's and im sorry's' you figure he's talking to his husband

he puts the phone down as the call ends "sorry dear that was my husband Nikolai, he's coming to get me"

and the plot thickens you'll get to meet the husband "that's alright what does he drink?" you say grabbing a new cup you don't care that you just switched all the machines off you want to know the other side of this little family dispute

"vodka" comes the short reply to which you raise a brow "or whiskey or burban he doesn't drink unless it's got a kick to it" ooh is he an acohalic? that would make things intresting,

your thoughts are cut off by a car pulling up infront of the cafe and a big man coming inside walking up to the man huddled over his coffee "Price, what are you doing?"

oooh a Russian accent you haven't heard one of those before and now you know the mans name "just talking to y/n here" right name tag, it never doesn't spook you when people read your name tag

the man stretches his hand over for a handshake "Nikolai"

"nice to meet you Nikolai" Nikolai pulls out a stool taking a seat next to Price "would you like anything to drink?"

he takes a glance at the menu above you "no thanks Dochka" looking back down he looks you over his gaze sends shivers down your spine "what are you doing working so late?"

"night shift pays better, no one else wants to do it so they pay more" you keep your chipper attitude because truthully you enjoy your job, the only downside is the walk home no amount of money can make walking home late at night in the city not scary

"y'know Nik i was telling y/n here about our little argument, figured we could use an outside opinion"

"well how's your relationship with your parent's Dochka?"

"truthfully i haven't spoken to either of them since i moved out" you rub your neck a bit nervous as that cannot possibly be a good thing to say to two dudes deciding weather or not they should adopt a daughter but you don't exactly get the time to tell them anything positive tho before Nikolai is over the counter sinking his surprisingly long teeth into his neck you can hear Price yelling at him that this is bad idea but you pass out before you hear Nikolai's response
