Day One: Dim Sum

Summary:

Nivanfield Week 2026 Day 1: Food

My take on the RE 6 level at the chinese restaurant in Chapter 3.

Notes:

I always thought what a beautiful restaurant it was until- like everything in Resident Evil 6- it was blown away by an explosion. I wanted to give a bit more space to the relationship between Chris and Piers—which is quite obviously shortchanged in the game—so I rewrote the level a little. This is my first attempt at writing for NivanfieldWeek 2026, and I have no idea if I’m doing it right. Anyway, I hope someone enjoys this story. I´d love to read some comments.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

"You´ve got to be kidding me!"
"Just keep moving", Chris Redfield bellowes- quite unnecessarily, since his lieutenant is already well ahead of him, leaping from one boat to the next. A helicopter fully occupied with murderous J`avo is directly behind them firing rounds and rounds of bullets, so none of the two soldiers would have stopped moving, anyway.
"We need to take cover in that building", Nivans calls, as he jumps from the deck of the foremost wooden sailing vessel onto the landing stage of what looks like a multi-story restaurant. Chris jumps, too, just as the boat under his feet explodes. Carried by the momentum, he slams head first into a huge golden gong, the ringing of which is matched only by the ringing in his ears.
"No need to make a big entrance, Sir, they already know we´re here." His lieutenant is busy shooting more enemies. Cocky bastard.
But the sniper is right. More J´avo stream out of the building which, indeed, turns put to be a noble chinese restaurant.
The two of them manage to take them out, but the chopper is still firing. Chris ducks behind the red-painted railing of the terrace deck and hauls his lieutenant along by the lapels before the helicopter's explosive rounds can hit him. They stumble inside the building—a dream of red wood and gold tables. "Fancy," Chris mutters. "If only it weren't for the mutants and the chopper," Piers adds. He ducks behind a table as a J'avo charges at him wielding a machete—or perhaps a really large butcher's knife. Chris has no time to reply, as he, too, is being pressed by several enemies. Just as the last of three J'avo transforms into a bubbling mass at his feet, he hears the familiar click of an empty magazine behind him. "Oh shit," his lieutenant curses as a J'avo with grasshopper-like legs prepares to leap over the table. Piers grabs the nearest object and hurls it in the creature's face. Chris, seeing little chance of stopping the enemy with a steamer basket, takes aim and shoots him, instead.
"Do you really think dumplings would have stopped him?" Chris asks, looking at the spilled contents of the bamboo basket.
"Dim sum, Sir."
Chris snorts. "Smartass."

Turns out, there are even more enemies in the restaurant than Chris has anticipated. A mutated creature with more eyes than any living being should have grabs him and slams him back against his sniper. The table gives out beneath the two soliders and the J´avo trying to jump at Chris. Piers, his gun trapped beneath the weight of his captain, again grabs for the next best thing he can reach- a chopstick- and relieves the J´avo of a few of his numerous eyes until Chris manages to bring his gun up and shoot it.
"Ugh, I´ll never try to use chopsticks, again."
"Try using a fork, it´s simpler, anyway", Chris chuckles and helps him up.

In the end, they manage to bring the chopper down. Of course, everything else has to go up in flames. "Somehow, this happens to me on a regular basis", Chris thinks, as the restaurant is blown apart.

Chris shruggs and then lookes over at his sniper: hands on his knees, trying to catch his breath while flames flicker in the background.
"You like chinese?"
Maybe it´s the smoldering remains of the restaurant, maybe the helicopter drowning in the shallow water- his lieutenant looks at him as if he´s lost his mind. Chris isn´t even sure where that thought came from, but he adds: "No, I´m sure, actually. We had chinese takeaway a few times. You liked it."
His lieutenant’s grin is the most genuine one he’s seen from him so far. "You remember, Captain!"
Chris shrugs. "Guess so. Am I remembering it right?"
"Absolutely, Sir." Piers glances over at the smoldering remains of the restaurant behind them. "Although I’m never ordering Chinese takeaway again."
"Oh really?"
"Yeah—didn't you see those mutated critters coming out of the kitchen? Like giant grasshoppers. What kind of ingredients were they keeping in that pantry?"
Now Chris had to grin, too. "I was always more of a pizza guy anyway."

Notes:

I might try to write some more stories for the other prompts of this week. Let´s see how far I get.
