Chapter Text
Ewron had been working on his church for a while now, it had been coming along. It provided a good distraction from an overwhelming feeling of dread that seemed to haunt him lately. Katie had always stressed Ewron out, but that was always from petty fights. (Always an excuse to be closer to her.) Now, Ewron was stressed from things much more out of his control. Like a certain boyfriend.
After so many comments about Ewron and Katie being in love—from everyone they both knew—she now had a boyfriend. Everyday if he wasn’t procrastinating with the church or other tasks he watched them grow closer. He had to admit he felt left out now, all her attention was slipping from him. The very thing he tried so hard to fight against.
Katie had a way with making Ewron feel something deeper than hatred or love. Annoying her so he could see every side of her—angry yelling or crying—was a dream for him. Now, he had to admit he was fearful that the entire Federation could sweep her away.
But he had seen Katie. In so many moments, he had truly seen her. Through both love and hate. She was powerful in her own way, one that lowered all of Ewron’s defences. She could hit him and he doubted he’d dislike it. Maybe he’d like it a bit, just for having her that passionate. The same way she always seemed to make him feel.
He hadn’t realised how much petty fighting meant to him until it was lost. Only silence wrapping around him now, devoid of yelling or crying.

The church was finished. It was a beautiful thing with beautiful views and stained glass. He felt content with having put such beauty into the world. Like religion itself was flowing through the walls and toward him. He did not know the name of god but only that it existed out there. Something powerful and beautiful, a kind of god that made he pause and admire as he did now.
He stood outside the church to look at it fully when he saw Katie approaching. His mind was slowly dragged from his religious worship like someone might pull a friend from deep mud. His brain felt like mush after having not seen Katie in so long, his wittiness was faltering.
“Bestie!!!” When she looked up the hill to Ewron already outside his church, she practically jumped up the hill to him. A very hybrid feature of hers, her unicorn horn, dog tail and ears, she always seemed to be jumping around. He had always found her hybrid features intriguing, much like her brother, Ash. Although hers seemed much more tame.
“Bestie!!!” Ewron screamed back, jumping up and down himself before Katie flew into his arms. He spun her once before setting her down. Although she could have gotten down on her own as she was a good amount taller than him.
Calling each other bestie was a bit of a stretch. It had gotten to a point the line between love and hate blurred. Neither knew weither being besties meant peace or war between the two.
“What are you doing here KatieB?! I have just finished my church!” Ewron was loud and rambled a bit, his usual. He was always amazed to find that Katie could match his energy with her own loud chipper voice.
“Well, I just wanted to visit my good friend Ewron!!! Show me the church!” Every word within this conversation felt fake and they both knew it. They hardly talked anymore, they were not good friends or besties anymore but neither were they enemies. They had spent so much time apart they were simply Katie and Ewron at the moment. Although that still seemed to include manipulation.
He almost found comfort in knowing she was still this way, even if he wasn’t around to witness it as much. He doubted the Federation worker could keep up with her wit like him. He pushed that aside.
Ewron walked Katie into his church, he bragged about it and guided her through the different elements of the church. Although his eyes stayed glued to Katie, not to his work. He felt his religion and devotion to a higher power strongly here. No matter what he seemed to do, that did not stop when he looked at Katie rather it intensified. Her reactions to the church meant more than the church itself.
Eventually they stood at the alter at the front of the church, looking over the mountain through the strained glass. It was quiet again. A silence that had eloped him during her absence. Within the church it seemed as though her presence echoed off the walls and bounced back at him though. The silence he had lived in within the church was different with her.
He could specifically see this when she sighed looking out the window. The wind rustled through her hair which seemed to glow under the colourful light from the glass, the sun itself praising her. This image was better than any view from his church, better than any he had seen throughout the entire island. Then she spoke, bringing Ewron out of his trance.
“Ewron, I’ve been thinking and Tomate might actually propose.” Her voice was quieter than usual as though she was hardly there, stuck somewhere deep in her mind. She had talked about the proposal but it seemed a lot more daunting for her suddenly. She continued on.
“I would like to have my wedding here,” She paused and turned to Ewron. She took his hands in hers. His heart was hammering, not from her touch but from the imagery of Katie marrying the Federation worker. “I would like you to be the priest.” She finished.
Ewron could not bring himself to speak but he could not look away. Not with her loose hair and colourful lighting that seemed to make her glow. She was warmth and light for Ewron he then realised. The Federation worker angered Ewron not because he was with the Federation but because he was with Katie. It was hardly about her attention. Because here, even if she had hardly looked at him until now Ewron felt right.
Ewron felt that simply watching her and being in her presence was his religion then. The one he had felt coursing through him in his aspirations to make this church. To please whatever god or gods may exist. To please Katie, to make something beautiful in a world where his beauty was her. Weither that be her yelling or smiling. Simply being at his side. He had been worshipping her while making the church, silently cursing Tomate as he had worked.
“Yes, anything.” His voice was deep at those two words. They were true sure, but they held something deeper. A distain maybe. Or even regret. For not having seen her before, for not have understood before. Ewron knew that Katie was special, he always had. Now in front of him, it seemed to settle deep in his chest. A fundamental truth now. That he loved Katie, all the power she held over him and all the power she let him keep. Because in all honesty, Ewron would throw away any power he had if she told him so.
Katie jumped up and down at his response, her hands falling from his. Her wings fluttered a bit as she jumped flying and dropping again and again. Katie was bragging now about how amazing her wedding would be. All Ewron felt was distain for the groom. He could not worship Katie the way he did, the way he honestly always had. From chasing to build next to her or listen in on her therapee sessions, what had Tomate ever done?
He eventually interrupted her, having had enough and finally found the words to speak. “You should not marry him Katie. We can hold a wedding but it should not be him.” His voice was small, unsure of himself knowing she would be displeased by his comment. His voice was almost pleading.
Katie looked down at him, an eyebrow raised clearly confused from his words. She had just spent the last ten minutes talking about how amazing the groom and the wedding would be. “Ewron what are you talking about? We love each other, duh.”
He shook his head at that, seemingly staring contently between their feet. “He doesn’t understand you. He should be here right now in fact, actually talking.” He heard an irritated sigh and looked up. He cut her off before she could argue. “You deserve so much Katie, you deserve love and devotion. It’s clear his only devotion is the Federation.”
Ewron tried to reason with her, taking a step closer and reaching for her hands. He clasped them with an almost helpless look. He didn’t know if what he was saying would make much sense. He simply wanted her to understand, how grave the situation considering that she could lose him. How could he let his ‘bestie’ marry someone who didn’t worship her the same way he could easily. He ignored the rising bile in his throat at that thought.
“I don’t get your issue with him Ewron.” She was dismissive of his pleas. A usual for her considering how stubbornly independent she attempted to keep herself. Ewron shook his head.
“He should be on his knees. He should be here now, like a lost puppy.” He held her hands tighter as he got on his knees before her. “Devotion Katie, you deserve it all.” Without noticing he also wore the lost puppy face, he had been wearing it since she got here. Possibly all week considering how permanent her presence seemed in his mind lately.
Ewron hands gently, almost carefully fell to the sides of her thighs. A helpless look was written across his face. For the first time in his life he felt as though he was praying correctly, like this was true worship unlike the usual prayer before bed. He could feel god, see god, rather than speak out into the darkness of the Polish Caves. His hands didn’t need to be closed together and his eyes could be open. To witness powerful beauty in a way that made Ewron feel the need to come closer. To be as close to Katie as possible. Body against sacred body.
Katie’s hand came to rest on Ewron’s head. She had to be honest, she thrived on the control Ewron so easily offered under the smallest of pushes. She could easily tell him to do something and he would. In a way that was different from Katie’s husband. Ewron was always panicked, desperate to get Katie what she wanted. Her some day husband was not desperate to please, he was silent and a bit of a push over when compared to Ewron. He listened to no one but her.
From this angle Ewron held her legs tighter, desperate for answer. For much of anything. He’d been so isolated for weeks, to touch another made his body vibrate even more so since it was Katie. He was a mess internally for Katie and Katie just so happened to be here, a moment of weakness made him turn to her completely. His religion had been the only thing he’d had for a long time while building, and now he felt as though she was god. He could see a wide spreading white wing to spread over around the both of them.
“Ewron, will you be my preist?” Katie’s voice was soft, much like her wings that brushed his red panda hair and along his arms. It was no longer on the topic of weddings they could both tell. Ewron did not want to think about the wedding. Any wedding at all for that matter, not one that included Katie. She was a god, meant for no mortal to have. Not even Ewron. She could have him everyday and that would be enough for him to have her.
“I’d love to be yours, Katie.” His voice was low and almost gruff. Every petty fight did not matter, they both knew that. None of it matters, none of it was true. This was. Ewron had never been this honest in his life. He would be a loyal servant to Katie. A deep part of him had known that before this moment. That his heart, his soul, belonged to only one. That he could pray and worship to her everyday and die happy within his arms.
Katie’s eyes crinkled in the corners with a satisfied smile at his words. Her hand ran through the front of his hair, gripping the pushing back to make his head tilt back. “Then you shall Ewron. You will be my priest and worship me. Devotion as you call it?”
It was as though a window had been opened, or maybe a door, more likely the whole building had been torn down. There was a breeze of cool fresh air, like he hadn’t breathed in weeks. Katie’s hair swayed around her, she seemed to sparkle and glow in the lighting.
“I am devoted to you.” His voice was desperate, his fingers digging into her pink clothes. He would never be this desperate in front of anyone else, he was prideful and petty. Here in his church with his god, he was devoted.
Katie then pulled her hand from his hair, her wings fluttering slightly before withdrawing from around him. She indicated for him to stand and he did hastily. Much like a soldier and much to Katie’s pleasure.
Katie leaned in then, not to his lips quite yet but to his ear. “You are my one and only.” The whisper was so quiet that Ewron almost didn’t catch it. It was true, her only priest, only worshipper. Only one that really saw her for who she was. The only one who had seen her power and grace. Seeing her as the god that she was. In a way that only Ewron could.
Katie then pulled away and brought her lips to Ewron’s. He did not kiss back for a moment still savouring his words. Then like a starved man he came to realise there were much better things to savour now. Gentle hands came to Katie’s face, a desperate mess to kiss her back. Her hands rested loosely at his waist. She did not let the kiss last long, pulling away sooner than Ewron would have liked. She smiled down at his begging eyes. She would have to postpone her check list it seemed, she always had a hard time denying Ewron when he begged. Almost as though her heard her thoughts, his lips parted to beg for more.
