heart to heart

Summary:

Wemmbu shrugs in reply, closes his eyes, ignores the blinding white behind his eyelids begging to be seen. "You don' have to explain, I understand dude."

He doesnt understand. He's not an angel, he wouldn't know what goes on up there in heaven or wherever Egg's from.

That's okay, though. Maybe it's just not his to understand. His words seem like they soothed Egg when he said them, so he'll pretend to know. Especially if thats what Egg needs.

OR: a soft, fleeting moment in eggchan and wemmbu's life.

Notes:

wow your hair is like really glowy and bright and your eyes are super big and blue and like .. omnipresent ..... wdym you're an angel no i never noticed

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

A bug crawls across Wemmbu's sleeve as grass tickles his fingertips, a blush sky with peach clouds is over his head, and an Eggchan is lying on his side, directly across from him.

A light dusting of purple orchids frame his white hair, his lashes trace the high arches of his cheekbones, and Wemmbu can't possibly look away.

He's mumbling something Wemmbu can't hear, the breeze carries itself heavy in his ears and it's not like he can exactly shut the breeze off, so, he could be saying anything, really.

"What are you even saying, bro?" Wemmbu's knees are curled against his chest, straining his ears just to hear the tail-end of Egg's giggle, reverberating wind-chimes in his head.

"It's a prayer, bro." He says, and drags a finger against the blue tulip separating them.

Wemmbu blinks, hesitates. "A prayer?"

"Dude, since when were you religious?"

Egg gives him an incredulous look in reply.

The peachy sky casts a soft glow over the contour of his face, and reflects off of the— the halo. The halo that's floating above his head.

He flushes in embarrassment, curls his knees in tighter to his chest, "Okay— Yeah— I admit, I totally forgot about the whole, uh… Angel thing."

Egg's laughter shakes his shoulders as he rolls onto his back, arm covering his eyes. Wemmbu would never admit it, but the sound pulls a smile out of him as it circles around his head.

It's not like Wemmbu just didn't notice Egg's whole angel thing, honestly. It's just not something he really paid attention to. He didn't feel like he needed to pay attention to it, truthfully. Egg is Egg, that's all he's really ever been to Wemmbu. All he really needs to be.

"So—" Has he ever paid attention to how Egg's laugh sounds like the rush of wind? "Are prayer classes mandatory in angel school?"

He watches as Egg's chest shivers with his giggles, watches the pearly white of his teeth peek through his two-toned lips. Maybe the rush of wind isn't a good analogy.

As the laughter dies down into a soft hum, Egg drops his arm down to rest on his chest, gaze focused far above the soft pink sky. "No. Cause there's no such thing as angel school, dude. We have normal schools it's just—"

He pauses, and Wemmbu's inability to look away from the blinding light that is Eggchan clenches at his chest. It's never a good thing to see Egg hesitant.

Or upset, or mad, or indifferent, or really anything that isn't happy. It's a selfish thought, but the look of any negative emotion on Egg's face makes Wemmbu annoyed. Annoyed that there could be a chance of something distressing Egg under his watch. Thats— Okay, actually, that's kind of a possessive thought.

Is possessiveness selfish if he's really just trying to look out for another person?

Is Wemmbu truly selfish if all he does is for another person?

Light lavender reflects in Egg's hair, a downy highlight mixed from the pink of the setting sky and the cool-white of his long hair. Maybe the sound of a flowing stream fits better?

"It's— a bit different, I guess. It's—" His laughter is something awkward, this time. Wemmbu blinks at the pinch in his brows. "It's hard to explain, bro."

It's silent, for a quick moment. Wemmbu continues to watch as the breeze caresses Egg's hair, blowing a pure white strand into his face, making his nose scrunch up.

It's hard to tell, especially if you're not close enough to him, but Egg has tiny freckles dotted across his cheeks and the bridge of his nose, and they shift whenever his face does, nose scrunch making them dance across his bridge.

The freckles may be barely visible to everyone else, but Wemmbu has mapped those constellations enough to make his own personal galaxy.

"It's not really a prayer, anyway. It's like— A quote, I guess? I don't really know, bro." A chuckle slips out, and his freckles wave to him as they dance on the apples of his cheeks.

He hopes the wave of his own eyelashes as he blinks is enough to satiate them. He lies straight through his teeth when he replies, "Are you gonna tell me what it is or not. You— You've essentially said a whole bunch of nothing."

"Chill, I'm getting there, you gotta wait." His gaze flits back to Wemmbu, head turning to look at him.

And he just— keeps looking at him. Keeps holding eye contact. Even as the wind brushes more hair into his eyes— Eyes nobody but Wemmbu is allowed to see nowadays. —, even as the downy peach sky shifts into a soothing deep lavender.

He may be a bit dramatic, it was truly only like— 5 minutes, but it felt like longer. Maybe he's just not good at eye contact, but the bright unblinking blue eyes staring at his stark white ones starts to unnerve him.

"Um— Okay, dude, are you gonna say it or what? This is starting to get weird." He awkwardly shifts from the ball hes curled into on the grass into a less tight one. A bug skitters across his arm.

Egg finally blinks, rapidly like he just zoned back in to the conversation, giggling the smallest amount, strained. "Yeah, yeah I will— Sorry."

His voice is meek, it hurts to hear, the sky casts a periwinkle shadow over the planes of his face. Wemmbu still can't look away.

"Make yourself familiar with the angels—" The angel in question starts, and Wemmbu finally tears his gaze away from him to stare at the spider who's started to make itself comfortable on his curled up arm.

"—And behold them frequently in spirit;" It runs up and down his sleeve, legs winding around the folds in the white fabric.

While it may not weave its web long enough to stay forever attached to him, it seems to be comfortable enough making a temporary home in the deep folds of his clothes. Egg's voice is almost distant as his attention gets lost in the long spindly legs of the spider.

"For without being seen," It gets caught on a blade of grass interrupting the smooth contour of his arm, and climbs over it to continue on its invasion of Wemmbu's own personal space. He considers flicking it off, but finds the movement to be too fickle. It'd ruin the moment, anyhow.

He barely hears when Egg finishes the quote, the soft purple of the sky mixing with the mossy green of the grass and effectively cutting off his attention from the angel trying to ring his true bells around his head.

"—They are present within you." Egg likes ending his sentences with a giggle, or a laugh, or any synonym of those two, and it seems to ring true even when he's quoting some religious scripture he got from his times as a little Eggchan, as the quote ends with the laugh that always gets Wemmbu to smile along.

"That's kind of a dumb quote," Wemmbu replies, instead of really trying to dig deep and analyze it. He's not really that kind of person, anyhow.

Egg laughs, turning his head away from him to go back to staring at the darkening sky.

"Yeah."

"Yeah, it's kinda dumb, isn't it?"

"For without being seen, they are present within you." Wemmbu finishes pinning the brooch on his ruffled ascot, light distorting the reflection in the redstone-dyed glass. If he looks hard enough, he can see his own reflection, trapped behind the darkness.

He lets out a shaky exhale. He can hear one of Arachnid's guards calling for him. "For without being seen, they are present within you."

"For without being seen, they are present within you." He should probably leave. He's going to be crowned as Arachnid's right hand man. He should probably get to that. His hand drops from where it's caressing the red brooch. He should leave.

He counts the steps as he reaches his door, hand gripping the doorknob with probably a bit too much strength, but nobody's around right now, so who knows? "For without being seen, they are present within you."

He twists open the door, the artificial brightness from night vision pots almost blinding. He shakes out another exhale. "For without being seen, they are present within you."

And, sure, he could potentially be muttering something under his breath as he makes his way to Arachnid's castle but—

Nobody's around, so who knows? It could be anything.

"For without being seen, they are present within you."
