Chapter Text

Dazai was just finishing up his work for the day, getting ready to leave and annoy Chuuya - today he would prank him by shaking his soda and making it spill all over his reports -when he heard a series of taps on his window. Looking over, he saw the usual owl outside, carrying a newspaper. Quickly, the owl was let in, paid, and let back out (not before being given some treats). Dazai stuffed the paper in his coat without even glancing at it, and continued with his day.

Eventually, Dazai made it to the peace and quiet of his newly acquired apartment. When he was promoted to executive, Mori forced him to abandon his dear shipping container and move into a ‘real apartment’. Apparently it was for security reasons or whatever.

Dazai knew he wouldn’t be able to fall asleep, so why even bother trying? Instead he took out his copy of The Daily Prophet and started reading. Immediately, the front page caught his eye, a moving picture of a bald, deathly pale man, with slits for nostrils and red eyes. The photo looked like it captured him in the middle of a maniacal laugh, with the caption reading He Who Must Not Be Named Has Returned!

Intrigued, Dazai continued reading.

At the end of June, six Hogwarts students broke into the Ministry of Magic, specifically the department of mysteries. The reason for their escapade is unknown, but some of the top theories have to do with prophesies (see more on page 3 column 25). While in the Department of Mysteries, witness reports say, 12 Death Eaters had appeared on the scene just minutes before. A large battle ensued, leading to the capture of many Death eaters including Lucius Malfoy.

As the battle played out, members of the Order of the Phoenix, a resistance against The Dark Lord led by Albus Dumbledore, appeared and joined the battle against the death eaters.

According to witness reports, Lord Voldemort himself appeared in the lobby of the Ministry of Magic, soon joined by Albus Dumbledore. It was reported that Dumbledore used a highly advanced spell to make the statue in the fountain protect one Harry Potter, who was also on the scene. Eventually, Voldemort disappeared, leaving only ruin in his wake.

This leads to many questions and few answers. How did He Who Must Not be Named cheat death? Why has he chosen now to return? What will the ministry do about this? Are we safe in our homes? Next week, an interview with Cornelius Fudge, Minister of Magic.

“Fuck”

-

The next day, as Mori was watching the yokohama sunset, he heard a knock on his door. The man sighed, knowing only one person would dare to knock on the boss's door so casually this late in the day.

“Come In Dazai-kun,” the door opened to reveal his masterpiece, the Demon Prodigy, the Black Wraith, the Youngest-

“Mori, it smells like old man in here.” The Black Wraith complained, making a show of covering his nose and fanning his face with his hand.

“So mean Dazai-kun!” Mori wondered why Dazai was here; he only ever enters Mori’s office when directly summoned, and sometimes even then he doesn’t show up. It must mean something urgent has come up. “Now, why have you decided to grace me with your presence today?”

Dazai’s nose scrunched up in disgust, “Creepy,” he then full body shivered. “It’s a long story,” he started, tone more serious, “but have you ever heard of wizards?”

-

Mori was… sceptical to say the least. To think an entire society was living right under their noses? Made of people who could use magic? It sounded like something straight out of a fantasy novel. When he expressed his concerns, Dazai pulled out a wand (or that's what Mori assumed the stick was), mumbled a word, and Mori’s teacup started floating. When Dazai put his wand away - smashing the teacup in the process - the boss of the Port Mafia got on all fours and started frantically searching for a wire, hiding ability user, anything to explain the strange phenomenon he had just witnessed.

Eventually, the man stood up, dusted himself off, and turned to Dazai, who was watching the whole scene with amusement.

“Why have normal people never discovered these wizards?” Mori asked in a professional manner, trying (and failing) to recover his dignity.

“They have spells to erase memories, and if you didn’t believe me until I demonstrated it, would you really believe anyone who didn’t have proof?”

“No, I suppose not.” Mori sighed, “Why have you chosen now to explain this to me Dazai-kun?”

“I believe the previous boss has risen from the dead…” he trailed off, “For real this time.” The silence in the room was deafening, but then it always was with these two people.

Mori was the first to speak, “What do you mean? I’m sure not even wizards have found a way to resurrect the dead, for it is one of the laws of the universe.” His voice was cold and emotionless, his features blank, but he was sure Dazai could sense the overwhelming fear he felt at that moment. His predecessor, the one who was known for destroying anyone who dared to even think out of line, no discrimination, only destruction. Also the man Mori murdered in cold blood, his only accomplice in this very room, he would surely want revenge.

“They haven't.” The younger of the two said flatly. He must have seen the question on Mori’s face, because he explained, “If my theory is correct, he never died in the first place, not really.”

“Do explain Dazai-kun.” It wasn’t a request, it was an order, a fact they both knew.

Dazai sighed, “This will take a lot of explaining,” but he still stayed standing, “All my facts have been gathered by the newspapers, but I’m fairly sure I’ve gotten it right.” he started “Around 16 years ago, on October 31st, the dark wizard Voldemort who had been terrorizing the wizarding world simply disappeared. Voldemort broke into the home of a family of three, killed the parents and attempted to kill the kid, but failed and vanished into dust, leaving only a scar on the child’s forehead.

“The whole wizarding world was led to believe he was dead, but my theory is that he used some sort of spell to tie himself to the physical world, and his corporal form made its way here. I noticed many signs in the old boss’s behavior that led me to believe he was a wizard, however, when I inspected his home, I saw none of the telling wizarding objects. Back then, I assumed the old boss was just content with living in the regular world, but now I think it was because he was influenced by Voldemort.

“During the last few days of his life, when the old boss had barely any coherent thought left, he started shouting spells at us. The ‘giberish’ was actually incantations made to torture and murder, but he also starting spewing noncence about how he was the “Dark Lord”, and the “Supreme Leader”. Both of these titles were things Voldemort was called by his followers. And my final point, the nail in the coffin so to say, when he passed, I felt a burst of magic exit his body and leave the building.” Dazai finally finished, barely even out of breath from his speech.

“This is certainly concerning.” Mori said, “But how has he returned? And do you have proof of it?”

Dazai let out a chuckle that sounded strangely condescending, “I’m assuming after we killed him, he returned to the U.K. and had his followers bring him back. As for proof,” He then pulled a newspaper out of his coat and (rather aggressively) set it down on the table separating the two.

“Oh? What’s this?”

“‘This,” Dazai pointed at the paper, “Is the newspaper article released after Voldemort's return was revealed. There had been rumors on his return circling for about a year before he revealed himself."

Mori grabbed the paper, eyes widening slightly when he saw the moving picture, and read the article.

-

Dazai was bored out of his mind. He had been in Mori’s office for what felt like hours, answering questions and explaining things any wizard would consider common sense. He was just about to leave, eagerly walking to the exit when he remembered one more thing he should explain.

“One more thing, I’m pretty sure Chuuya’s a wizard.”

Mori’s eyes widened slightly before he quickly schooled his expression. “Really? How common is it for ability users to be wizards?”

“I’m not sure I’ve only ever met two,” Dazai paused for a moment before adding, “if I can count myself.” he turned back around to face Mori, “I don’t think he knows though, when we first met, accidental bursts of magic would happen whenever he got angry, however, as he gained control over his ability, those stopped two. He probably doesn’t even know the wizarding world exists.”

Mori thought for a moment before humming, “You’re excused.”
