Burning In A Hopeless Dream

Summary:

Parrot hopes, desperately and unreasonably, that Wifies will make it out of Paragon. That delusion shatters like glass in the same explosion that kills his best friend.

Notes:

Title taken from the lyrics in ‘Lift Me Up’, supposedly from Black Panther? IDK and IDC.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Call him delusional; he is. Parrot is delusional. He is hopelessly naive, and still he hopes, even as his wings beat against the edges of his cramped birdcage, that there is a way out of this, a Parrot-and-a-Wifies to return to. There is a way out of this where no one gets hurt, some part of him screams, a tiny flame of hope burning in his chest.

His excellent rational brain produces this: he is naive. He is in denial. There is no way one of them won’t die in this prison. Still, its emotional counterpart goes on, gaily insisting that everything has to turn out right because - because there must be a Parrot-and-a-Wifies.

That delusion only shatters like a mirror when an explosion blows up the heart of Paragon and Parrot is left with a ghost for a best friend.
