Summary
Kris fixed their gaze on Noelle, whose head was now tucked against Susie's shoulder. Kris had known Noelle since birth. They could read her every movement. She chewed her festive pencils when she was nervous. She balled up the fabric of her skirt in her fists when she was afraid, and a furrow would appear between her brows when she was confused—but again, Noelle returned the same nervous energy. It looked as though she was trying to hide a grin, no doubt biting the inside of her cheek.
This wasn't for Kris; this was for Noelle and Susie only. So why couldn't they stop looking?
This whole day has felt like a whirlwind; something rough and biting — with every single event falling on them like stacks of weighted boxes. They're surprised they hadn't yet been crushed by the weight of it all.
Roaming around the festival, barely catching a wink during their nap earlier, scouting out their own dark world with their heart heavy and their stomach sickened.
And every interaction they'd had with Susie had worsened that feeling.
She'd never made them feel sick before.
Kris has a couple moments to ruminate at the lake.
