Chapter 1: Together

Chapter Text

The digital sunset was glaring too brightly over the circus grounds, casting long, unsettling shadows. Pomni stared at the abstract scenery, her jester hat's bells jingling softly as she anxiously adjusted her gloves, mind racing as she thought back to the adventure they had had earlier that day.

"Penny for your thoughts, little jester?" a familiar, smug voice purred right behind her.

Pomni jumped, her eyes darting to find Jax leaning against a candy-striped pole, twirling a stolen prop. She rolled her eyes, but the usual tension between them was different this time—quieter, less chaotic.

It was strange.

"I'm just thinking about how ridiculous this place is," she muttered.

Jax let out a short, quiet scoff before pushing off the wall and stepping closer to her, the digital scent of lemon drops dancing through the air. He was taller, always looming just enough to be overbearing, but today his violet ears drooped slightly. "Yeah. Ridiculous."

Before Pomni could process his sudden lack of teasing, Jax reached out. One gloved hand gently cupped the side of her face, right below her hat. His hand caressed her cheek as she looked up at him, seeing Jax’s eyes wide, a light blush dancing across his cheeks.

She froze, her pupils dilating as he leaned down. It was a brief moment of vulnerability—a fraction of a second where his confident grin faded into something soft, almost genuine.

He closed the distance between them. Their lips met in a surprising, tender press. It was completely uncharacteristic of the usually cynical rabbit, yet undeniably real. Pomni's breath hitched, her hands instinctively clutching at his overalls as the shock of it washed over her.

Jax tenderly rested his arms on Pomni’s shoulders, before gripping them like a lifeline. The kiss deepened as they both found comfort in each other, in their hearts, in the knowledge that neither would let the other abstract, whatever happened.

When he pulled back, both of them were staring at each other in sudden silence. Jax quickly cleared his throat and offered his classic, sly smirk again, but his cheeks were noticeably tinted with a digital blush.

"How's that for your first circus kiss?" he teased, though his hand lingered on her cheek for just a moment longer.

Pomni stared at him, stunned as Jax stared back before retracting his hand and walking away.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Pomni was left there, cheek cold and empty, missing his warm touch.

The next day, Pomni and Jax were paired together in an adventure. Trust Caine to make everything awkward.

They were wandering through a forest, dressed as explorers. So far, they had wandered in complete quiet, stealthily stealing glances at each other.

Jax took a deep breath before deciding to break the awkwardness.

”Your silence speaks volumes,” he said flatly, looking to Pomni only to find her staring at him.

She looked away, “Shut up.”

It wasn’t meant in a mean way, at least, Jax didn’t think so. He took a deep breath, then continued.

“I- I’m sorry. If last night, made you feel… uncomfortable. It’s just,” he sighed, “Every time I look at you, I feel like my heart is about to burst and I can never get the words out to say that-“ he paused, breath catching, “I- I think I love you, Pomni. It becomes clearer to me ever day. I nearly abstract every time you’re not with me. I’m sorry if I hurt you, and I’m sorry I didn’t say this sooner and-“

Jax was cut off by Pomni grabbing him and tugging him into a kiss, gentle yet rough at the same time. Jax felt every single wall he’d ever had up melt away as the jester ignited something in him the purple rabbit didn’t know he had.

The whole world melted away, leaving just two lovers, yin and yang, Pomni and Jax.

And it was then that they began an adventure of their own, without the circus’s bright colors and crazy antics. Just two people who had found their place.

Together.

”Well that sure was good!” Bubble commented, before getting popped by Caine.
