Un/Accustomed Custody

Summary:

Dr. Starline begins realizing that Project Remaster is failing because of two factors, and both involve how he needs to keep Surge and Kitsunami compliant. He built a sentient Badnik to act as their parent to control them.

The Badnik thinks he’s alive, and wants the best for Surge and Kit. This lead to unexpected results, for better him. But worse for Dr. Starline.

Notes:

(Heyo!!! I’m Doze! I’m making ANOTHER Sonic series involving a dad and a robot, cuz I guess I do that trope a ton. For that I’m sorry, because I don’t wanna stick to a trope. But I’m keeping this one since this has some potential, I think. I remember running into a fanfic where Dr. Starline had an extra member to Surge’s team and she helped Surge and Kit not take their vengeance out on Sonic, and that became one of the inspirations for this fic. Anyways, we’ll get into this! Enjoy the chapter!)

Chapter Text

Chapter 1:

Dr. Starline typed into his computer and was about to enter one of his daily video diaries.

“Day 10 of Project Remaster, while the hypnotic sessions with Surge and Kitsunami are going well, I realized in my last session from an interaction with Kitsunami…” the platypus went on, as he sighed in disappointment.

“…Following my last session with him, when I asked him what he knows about himself to test if his loyalty to Surge was second nature now, he began having a mental breakdown…”

He looked at the audio footage of Kitsunami having a breakdown, trying to break out of his chair before Dr. Starline had to sedate him with the Hypnoglove and put him to sleep.

“As such, this will become a cumbersome task if I am unable to get them into a state of compliance. I do not have the time nor resources to bring in another test subject, so I will need to make the extra asset myself. I’ll be making Surge and Kitsunami a “parent”, as it were.” Starline explained, in his video log.

“This unit will be keeping them emotionally stable and act as a de-escalator. Someone willing to protect them and love them genuinely, which will make them easier to control and motivate them.”

Starline then looked at the schematics of his newest creation. He wanted something non-threatening and huggable, making it easier to confide for Surge and Kitsunami.

He called him “Mythril.” The schematics for this were simple rotund black furred bear. His teal eyes covered by black tinted sunglasses.

He designed a white suit with a red necktie for him, to give him a personal secretary look to him.

Just because he is supposed to be for Surge and Kitsunami doesn’t mean he won’t need him for personal data.

Mythril would believe he truly is alive, that he is Surge and Kit’s father, and he’s worked for Dr. Starline after his fallout with Dr. Eggman.

And as such would be keeping track of data, getting his tools and snacks and other things.

Dr. Starline would program the memories and personality from what he gathered from Belle’s data and sentience.

Surge and Kitsunami were biological beings with cybernetic implants. Mythril would be like Belle.

A sentient Badnik.

(A Few Days Later)

Dr. Starline was monitoring another test as Mythril acted as his personal assistant. “Your coffee, Doctor.” He said, with a warm smile. “Thank you very much.” Starline said in response.

“Hahahaha! Not bad…at being below average!” Surge said, as she soared out of the chamber.

“Dad! Check it out! I aced it no problem!” Surge said, excitedly.

“You left Kitsunami behind…again.” Starline said, as he fixed his tinted glasses.

“You’re getting faster, honey! But please, you two are supposed to be a team.” Mythril advised his daughter.

Surge just rolled her eyes like she had heard it a thousand times. “I’m the big hero here, what exactly is there to deal with—“

“Surge, I mean it. You and Kit are supposed to work together.” Mythril said, as he walked toward them.

He saw Kit using the water to launch himself out of the chamber. “I-I’m sorry! I-I was too late!” Kit apologized pleadingly!

“You did great, Kit! You’re getting faster.” Mythril assured, patting the boy’s head. “My widdle Kitty-Witty’s all gwown up now…”

Kit then blushed, embarrassed. “Papa!” He said, trying to brush his paw off. “Besides, I was late…” He then said.

“Oh baby bear, you gave the test your best! Besides, your sister is supposed to be working WITH you.” Mythril assured his son. “B-But she’s the hero here!” Kit objected.

“Regardless, I need you two to act as partners if we want to take down Sonic.” Dr. Starline scolded the two of them.

“We’ll run another test in 30 minutes. Mythril, talk some sense into those two.” Dr. Starline said as he walked off.

Mythril sighed, “Sorry about that, kids.” He said. “S’fine, just wish he wasn’t so stuck up about it.” Surge then said, resting her head against the wall.

“That said, honey. He is right. You and Kit are supposed to be working together. Two are stronger than one, and if you two played off of your new powers, I’m sure you’d yield better results.” Mythril explained.

“Played off? How?” Kit asked.

“Hmmm…We got thirty minutes to set up a possible scenario! We gotta head to the base’s break room!” He said, knowing the layout of the land.

He doesn’t understand why, but he hasn’t even seen the break room or any room in this base yet he knows the layout so well.

Maybe he’s just got bad memory today.

“Hmmm, now let’s see.” Mythril pulled out a pen and started drawing the layout of the obstacle course.

“Okay, now any ideas on what you two can do differently once you get to the platforms?” Mythril asked.

“I dunno, I had enough time to rush through the platforms no problem, and Drippy grapples to get leaps.” Surge suggests.

“Yes yes, and you’re incredible for that, honey, but remember you two are partners. Not a hero and a sidekick.” Mythril explained.

“I’m gonna suggest this. You guys learn how to work together here. Catch your partner if they fall, because while the doctor wants you to improve your strengths, you’d yield better results if you learned how to work as a team.” Mythril explained his own tactics, like he’s done this a thousand times.

“Okay, but what happens when the doc gets mad we aren’t completing the course?” Surge asked, frowning.

“Then I take full responsibility, so he doesn’t yell at you two.” Mythril said. “You guys can tag team the Motobugs. Kit, sweetheart, I want you to make sure your hydro-tails don’t mash when Surge is using her powers. I don’t want you to get electrocuted.”

“O-Okay. What do we do then, Papa?” Kit asked. Mythril smiled as he explained to his son and daughter what they were gonna do.

(Later)

Starline begins running the course once again. Surge and Kit ran through to the first stage: the platforms.

“All right. Kit, what did Dad say to do?” Surge asked, “Y-You throw me, I throw you…W-Will this work?” Kit asked.

Surge had an intense smile, “We’ll see. Come on!” She then grabbed Kit’s hand. “M-M-Ma’am! SURRRGEEEE!!!!” Kit shouted as he was thrown at a high speed.

He tried to use his hydro-tails. He wasn’t as quick on his feet as his sister, but his thoughts were quicker!

He quickly grabbed the ledge. “O-O-Okay! Now, ma’am!” Kit shouted, as he pulled another tail and threw Surge at the next platform.

“WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!” Surge said, enthusiastically to reach the ledge.

Kit quickly dispersed of the water for Surge to push herself against the wall and they had moved faster than they did before.

“Here it comes! Now, Drippy!” She said, and Kit tried to reach the pole nearby.

But the distance between them was a little too far. “N-No! No!” Kit shouted, as he tried to keep it together and shot another hydro-tail at the pole.

He managed to grab it faster, “H-Hold on, Surge!” Kit said, as he tried to get to the next platform.

“Rrrggh!” Kit and Surge growled as they barely made it. “Don’t miss the catch next time, will ya?!” Surge said.

“Y-Yes ma’am.” Kit said, fearfully, the two of them had managed to get past the first set.

The next stage was a set of obstacles. Spikes and laser guns aimed in multiple areas. Springs and rails too.

“O-Okay, I-I’ll cover us!” Kit said, “Relax, I got this!” Surge cracked her knuckles and rushed ahead, launching several homing attacks at the guns above.

“Jump, Drippy! Get on the rail!” Surge said, as Kit nodded and launched himself into the air to gain the momentum.

Then, he rushed onto the rail. Surge then backflipped as she landed right in front of them. “Piece’a cake! We’ll be done in no time!” Surge said.

“Now comes the best part! LET’S THRASH ‘EM!” Surge said, and she rushed through to the next one.

“W-Wait for me, ma’am!” Kit said, using the tails to push him faster. He leapt off the ground and then they entered the final test.

“Okay, Dad said that we need’a watch our backs. Don’t show me up, Drippy. Got that?” She asked her brother.

“Y-Yes ma’am!” Kit said, affirmatively. He pulled out all the hydro-tails he could.

Surge blasted through some of the Motobugs while Kit launched the tails at the Egg Pawns. “Hahahahahaha! Nothing but a bore!” Surge said, enjoying the struggle of fighting.

Kit then felt that they might actually win this! They had a few setbacks, but they managed to get through this rather fast.

Kit then kept his eyes open, and he turned to watch Surge break through all the robots. Then he saw one shooting at her in her blind spot.

“SURGE!” Kit shouted, shooting a tail quickly at the robot. Surge got tripped up, and flicker of her electricity had tapped into Kit’s water!

“Rgh!” Kit flinched at the shock! “Whoa! D-Drippy!” Surge said, both angrily and fiercely.

Kit flinched and then the robots surrounded him. “Dang it! You just had to get in the way, huh?!” Surge asked.

“S-Sorry, ma’am!” Kit said, as he tried to get ready to fight again.

But then they heard the alarm.

And with that alarm, did the lights in the course turn red, and the robots stood down.

“Rgghhhhh! DANG IT!” Surge said, kicking a nearby robot.

Kit flinched, “Th-This is my fault…” he said, shamefully. The two of them walked towards the end of the obstacle course.

Dr. Starline and Mythril awaited them.

“Once again, you failed to reach the goal together…” Dr. Starline started off.

They expected another scolding. Kit had shame on his face, while Surge held annoyance in her eyes.

“Kitsunami, you failed to watch your own front in favor to protect Surge.” Dr. Starline scolded him, “You continue to be reckless and leave your brother behind, Surge.”

“Yeah yeah—“ Surge was about to brush it off again.

“But…I do believe this was the first test I’ve seen the two of you team up as partners.” Starline said, fixing his tinted sunglasses. “While you didn’t complete the course, you’ve made an ounce of progress. Well done.” He said.

This surprised Surge and Kit. The doctor never praised them before since they’ve been running these tests.

“Well, we’ve earned a little R&R for today. Mythril, you’re clear after you make my favorite scones.” Starline said to his assistant.

“Right away, sir.” Mythril said, walking with Dr. Starline. He gave Surge and Kit a happy and proud smile as he walked away.

Surge and Kit then looked at themselves. Kit then blushed, “Gr-Great job, ma’am.” He said.

Surge sighed, “I did better than great, Drippy. But, uh…nice job.” Surge said, giving her brother a pat on the head. “Just remember that I’M the hero, got it?” She reminded Kit of his place.

“Y-Yes ma’am.” Kit said, smiling to himself.

(That Night)

“Did you see that?! We were awesome back there!” Surge said.

“Oh silly, of course I did! I’m glad this strategy worked!” Mythril said, brushing the back of his ears.

“We oughta have you in the course, Dad! You’d make this easy for us all the time!” Surge said.

“Oh nonsense, I’d only slow you two down. Besides, I’m glad you two are actually managing to work together.” Mythril said, “Now, I’m making cookies. Did you two want any cookie dough?”

Any sense of respect Surge had for the bear was gone in an instant. “Ughh, save the mushy stuff for Drippy, Dad. I’m heading to bed.” She said.

“Ok, good night, Surge!” Mythril said, waving as he put on a frilly pink apron. He smiled and blushed in adoration at Kit. “Now, does Papa’s favorite widdle Kitty wanna help him make snackies?” He asked, speaking in an infantile tone.

Kit gave his father one of his infamous cold stares. Mythril’s smile stayed all the same. “You know you can’t scare Papa with your scary face, sweetheart.” He said.

Kit sighed, “Papa…” he was begging for him to stop.

“I know, I know. I’m just teasing, Kit. Mwah!” Mythril said, as he walked towards the pan.

“Why are Papa’s stupid kisses always so cold…” Kit asked himself, as he joined his dad in baking cookies.

“Want a bit of cookie dough before I bake it, sweetheart?” Mythril asked, holding the spoon out for him.

Kit then nodded, “Okay, what do I do?” He asked.

Mythril then tapped his son’s shoulder and pointed to the sink. “The first thing you can do, little mister, is go wash your hands. Now you wait for me, the doctor’s calling me.” Mythril said.

Kit then looked at the bear confused, “I didn’t hear anything. How do you know?” Kit asked.

“You…didn’t hear the alarm, son? Anyways, I’ll be back. Don’t touch the cookie dough until I get back!” He said, leaving as he left to go see what the doctor needed.

He didn’t understand how Kit didn’t hear the alarm, but maybe Kit was just too tired after today’s training.

Ever since he started working for Starline, it’s been errands and his son and daughter training to fight Sonic and Eggman.

He worries for them, but the doctor has to know what he’s doing. He’s got their best interests at heart…

What makes Mythril think that?

Notes:

(Okay, so we’re done! Not so different from the original story so far. Surge and Kit still wanna kill Sonic, and Starline is still his horrific self. Now we see why HE would try to make a character like Mythril, since he wants to keep them under his thumb. But those chains won’t last for Surge and Kit and Mythril will follow the same logic. Anyways, so about Mythril’s name. I’m sure it’s confusing you, huh? Well, if anyone plays RPGs, Mythril is a fictional metal used to either refine weapons, craft materials, and stuff. So, the bear Badnik having the name Mythril has two meanings. I’m sure u can figure out the rest. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Anyways, this will be on the back burner until I finish other stories! So look forward to more in the future! Stay strong and awesome!)
