At first sight

Summary:

When Yellow and Blue finally meet for the first time as "human beings" in the Dark World, Yellow falls for Blue. Hard.

But does it really count when they've both been longing for years already?

Notes:

Alternately titled "Yellow being a lovesick doof for almost 2k words."

Was trying to take a nap when something possessed me to write Blellow. Surprised it took just over a week before the urge bit lol, might as well take the opportunity to rotate the mental crops a little between working on longfic chapters in another fandom.

For some reason both of them turned out to be a nightmare to write so if anything feels OOC, well, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I tried.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

When he laid eyes on Blue, it was like seeing the sunrise for the very first time—which was certainly saying something, since the sun (a sun? He’d been told there were multiple) was also literally rising at that exact same moment.

Yellow had always felt some kind of attraction to the deep blue flower he’d shared a space with in Asgore’s wedding bouquet, right from the moment the seven of them were bundled close, stems squishing and tangling. It lingered throughout the years, never dulling with time nor circumstance. Even though his senses were limited, he could tell whenever Asgore lifted up the glass that the others were still with him, happy and healthy, and his awareness of the blue flower’s presence was strongest of them all despite nearly being at the opposite ends of their little horseshoe formation. A special compatibility between their pollen, maybe, or a gene bred into their seeds that made both of their species easier to grow in the same soil without competing for nutrients.

Not that he'd know diddly-squat about all that; most plants were only conscious up to a certain point.

And then the Dark Fountain sprung up.

Flowery already filled him in on the situation, and that all was perfectly fine. He was sure he'd be able to deliver justice to whatever criminals entered his crosshairs, for Asgore's sake. But since he had a little bit of idle time to get his bearings, he figured a quick patrol for crime was in the cards, which immediately turned into aimless wandering in the dark given he was still disoriented from waking up and the fact that the castle grounds were kiiiiind of a maze. (Wrong kinda maze, he caught himself thinking more than once. Needs more maize.)

Might've been five minutes, or thirty for all the difference it made, before he fumbled his way to the fields of wheat. And there was Blue, gazing out over the edge of the cliff at the sun—at least, he was, until he suddenly turned to lock surprised eyes with Yellow. The jangle of his spurs probably gave him away.

Yellow would’ve felt like scum for disturbing his peace, had he not been so immediately smitten. Were human hearts supposed to beat that fast? Sure on occasion he'd heard something about them racing from those shows Asgore watched, but he thought they’d have to be outside the human body to run on legs and ohGoshBluewascomingover—

His steps were graceful. Arms out, balancing effortlessly on pointed toes, heels never once touching the ground. Heck, not even Flowery moved like that, and that guy practically embodied charm.

So mesmerized, Yellow barely reacted when a spotlight popped to life over his head.

“Yellow,” greeted Blue and, wow. Even his voice was graceful. “What a joy it is to finally meet you like this.”

“Golly, you're beautyful.” That was…not at all the first thing you were supposed to say to someone! Oh no, was that illegal?! Not saying “hello”? He didn't know, but it certainly didn't feel right, and sure, Blue hadn’t said it either, but—but that was different! Heat rushed to fill his head, turning the skin under his collar damp and sticky, and he tugged at it to let the faint breeze in. Some Justice he was supposed to be, mucking up saying hi.

But Blue didn't appear offended. Rather, he laughed, gentle and clear as the bells he'd seen hanging around the castle. “Why, thank you, dear.” Blue gave him a once-over. “I must say, you're quite the lovely bloom yourself.”

Dear alone was enough to make Yellow weak in the knees. The compliment took him the rest of the way out, dropping like a bag of rocks, heart threatening to flutter away right through his mouth.

Blue's startled gasp was louder to him than even the rushing sound in his ears, same with the click of the spotlights vanishing, and finally Yellow's gaze fled elsewhere, suddenly finding it impossible to look up at the mess he’d gone and made. Just for good measure, he whipped off his hat to hide his face in it. Not only had he fumbled his greeting, but now here he was, making a darned fool of himself, dropping like that. Might as well stop bothering poor Blue with his shenanigans and disappear into the wheat. But before he could fully lie down and assume rolling position, a shadow moved in front of his hat, blocking out some of the light filtering through and prompting him to peek out.

Blue was offering him a hand. “Are you alright?”

Well, he couldn’t go and join his distant wheaty brethren in the ground after such a kind offer. “‘m just peachy,” he answered, and allowed himself all of a moment to admire Blue's fingers before accepting the hand, his other one setting his hat back in place. It was so soft; his mind must've been playing tricks on him, though, because it almost felt like Blue's palm was just as sweaty as his. “Sorry for all the fuss, that was mighty embarrassin’ of me.”

“There's no shame in having wobbly legs for your first performance. We've only just obtained these forms and they'll require practice to master.” Blue paused, his free hand patting the back of Yellow's (oh, he was actually going to pass out at this rate) before coming to rest on his own chest. “If you feel woozy, then may this water wash away your fears.”

Even though the spotlight hadn't startled Yellow, the rain suddenly drenching his head sure did. Water pooling in the brim of his hat spilled as it landed from where it had shot a foot in the air, and poured in a torrent down his back when he looked up at the cloud. The cool sensation soothed the heat from his face and under his collar, filling his body with a freshly blossoming strength.

And, he realized somewhat belatedly, Blue continued to hold his hand the entire time.

“Thanks much, 'm feelin’ better already.” Aw shoot, why not? Something about touching Blue's hand continued to embolden him long after the shower eventually stopped. “D'you, uh…wanna take a mosey ‘round these parts?” He scratched his damp cheek, managing a grin. “I mean, if you gots time. Flowery only jus’ rounded me up not too long ago, ‘n I barely know nothin’ ‘bout this here world...”

Blue's smile almost took his breath away, and—wait was Blue blushing?! “That sounds like a wonderful idea.”

Stunned as he was, Yellow had no choice but to fall in step behind Blue when he turned and took the lead, helpless as a plucked leaf in a gale. Not that he would've resisted, anyway. It didn’t matter where they went, he wanted nothing more than to follow such beauty and kindness anywhere and everywhere, even if they were heading…

Right towards the…edge of the…?

At first he thought he'd missed something while so enamoured, a hidden staircase or a sloping path or, or, well, something, but the closer they walked the more clear it became that Blue was intent on strolling straight off a sheer cliff. The chill that shot through him was of a different breed than before, struck by the mental image of Blue dropping over the edge and disappearing from sight. The squishy human parts in his abdomen sank. If anything happened to Blue…if he let anything happen to Blue…

Yellow planted his feet hoping to stop their advance. His boots squelched audibly. A smidge too late, panic filling the empty abdomen cavity as Blue's pointed toes dangled over the edge.

“W-wait, Blue—”

Wings. Gigantic, blue wings unfurled from Blue's back in a flurry of petals, translucent enough to filter sunlight through and just as gorgeous as the rest of him. His other foot left the ground, a puff of wind blowing dust from his shadow. Then he turned back and watched, hovering over empty air, clearly expecting something.

Any relief from seeing Blue conquering gravity was overwhelmed by sheer awe. Yellow stood gaping at the edge of the cliff, drawn in that last step to the very limit without even realizing it.

After a few seconds of mutual staring, Blue's brow furrowed, and his smile faded to concern. “Oh dear, can you not fly?”

Yellow blinked, snapping out of his daze. “Uh…I might?” Twisting, turning, he tried to peer at his own back to no avail. No wings from what he could see, though. “'m not really sure what all I’m capable of yet.”

“That's alright. Let love guide your steps, and I'll take care of you.”

Love, huh?

Despite the drop, Blue took Yellow’s other hand and gently tugged him forward. The sun haloed his hair, his wings, his soft smile, his everything. Not a darned thing in the whole wide world, light or dark, could've stopped Yellow from walking forward in that moment, following Blue, his Blue (later Yellow would judge himself mighty selfish to have thought that, and Blue would reassure that he'd been his at first sight) effortlessly off the cliff.

His foot met not rushing air, but a vibrant blue cloud, solid as packed earth. It barely even sagged under his weight once he was fully on. Then it moved, a slow, steady rise into the sky, and he might've been just a little freaked out as the ground grew further and further away, had Blue's hands not held him firm.

At that moment he knew. He was sure, more sure than he'd ever been in his botanical life, that he was in love. And with a certainty that bordered on baffling if he'd bothered to think about it for more than two seconds, he knew Blue felt the same. The truth was clear in those sparkling eyes, in that same irresistible tug of attraction from when they first met in the bouquet. A deep-seated longing finally fulfilled.

Aw shucks, he was starting to tear up a little from the sheer weight of emotion.

The cloud stopped rising, and Blue turned them so they both stood sideways against the sun, each now sharing the light. Yellow mustered up the will to look away of his own volition and take in the scenery that Blue brought them up for, the fields below them, the caverns continuing on behind Blue, the mountains in the distance, he even turned back to get a good view of the castle. Between each one, his eyes kept returning to Blue, the prettiest sight of them all. Every time, he'd catch Blue looking at him as well.

At his feet, tiny blue flowers began to bloom out of the fluff, and he vowed to protect and uphold justice for them as well as Asgore. Maybe Blue could show him how to fly so he wouldn't have to worry about accidentally trampling on 'em. Heck, maybe Blue could show him a lot of things.

“Yellow, dear, ours is an important role in this performance,” Blue began the next time their eyes met. “To fulfill that which Asgore desires, and to care in turn for the man who has cared for us with such devotion, such love. But in the pauses between scenes, perhaps…” His grip tightened. “...there would be time for a dance of our own. I, for one, hope to better know the thoughts behind the flower.”

Part of it definitely flew over Yellow’s head, but that didn’t really matter. He understood the important parts. So, he nodded, and squeezed back. “Blue, I'm thinkin’ I'd love that…”
