Chapter Text
A Wide Eyed Wilde
A sequel to Love, Sacrifice & Consequences: A Zootopia Story
By: Killer0nTheRoad
things to remember for good visuals: this is a sequel, so the things that happened in the previous story happened in the past of this universe. Nick still only has one eye (missing right) and previously (but not since the last time you’ve seen it) suffered from PTSD as a result of surviving a shooting. just for reference, Dahlia is an all-grey fox, shorter than Nick but about a foot taller than Judy, sharing Judy’s purple eyes. this story is set 25 years after the end of the first, making Dahlia 24 years old, Nick 59 and Judy 51. also meaning Nick and Judy have been married for 25 years.
now, things that happened in-between then and now: Bogo retired, replaced by Hogbottom, Hogbottom retired, replaced by Judy who has been chief for 5 years now. Nick is no longer self conscious about his missing eye (its mostly grown over with fur anyways) so he’s ditched the patch and is usually wearing sunglasses when he can.
CHAPTER 1: The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far
The weather is crashing down torrential rain, thunder, lightning. A slender grey fox is sprinting at top speed through an obstacle course as if the weather wasn’t even there. Through the tires, under the barbed wire, monkey bars, finally reaching the wall. 30ft high she looks up at it with determination. Skipping every other grip and foothold she reaches the top in ten seconds flat and down the other side in three. Finally sprinting through the stretch of mud, she’s just light enough to speed across the top of it without sinking, reaching a canopy at the end where a standing polar bear clicks a stopwatch.
”one minute, thirty-seven seconds….”
The fox pants, hands resting on her knees, speaking slowly between breaths.
”I can… go… faster… let me… go… again… in a minute…”
”FASTER? girl are you insane? the last time a mammal cleared this course that fast was like… 27 years ago! you PASSED!”
she gave herself a little excited fist pump “YESSS!”
”What’s your name, recruit?”
”Dahlia… Dahlia Wilde… call me Lia..”
”Wilde… hmm… why does that name sound familiar?”
”uh….”
”wait… WAIT… YOU’RE NICK AND JUDY WILDE’S DAUGHTER!”
”…. yeah..”
”I guess the apple doesn’t fall far, huh?”
”what do you mean?”
”the record that was set 27 years ago, one minute, twenty-five seconds, Judy Hopps”
”well at least I was close…. how close was I to my dad’s time?”
”lets see…… Nick Wilde…. seven minutes, fourty-eight seconds”
A goofy smile crosses Lia’s face before she bursts out laughing “BAHHHAHAHAHAHA, SEVEN… ALMOST EIGHT MINUTES… oh… he’s gonna hear about that”
”go get yourself cleaned up, tomorrow’s the big day, GRADUATION!”
Just as the rain finally lets up, Lia runs inside and showers off, getting into some warm dry clothes, sweatpants and her ZPA T-shirt. She sits in her office chair at her desk in the dorm room and pulls out her phone.
*dial tone* *dial tone*
”Hey, Dolly… what’s up sweetheart…” Nick’s voice on the line.
”seven minutes forty-eight seconds, huh”
”oh boy, you heard about that, huh? look…. I’m not as light on my feet as your mother is, alright. and it took YEARS for her to let that go, so I don’t need it from you too”
”well…. I’m still gonna make fun of you for it”
”I would expect nothing less from you, you’re definitely MY daughter….. are you ready for graduation?”
”more than anything”
”we can’t wait to see you up on that stage, Lia”
”I’ll see you tomorrow, daddy…”
”love you, Dolly”
”I love you too, dad..”
Lia already has her ceremonial blue uniform laid out, ironed and clean as the day it was made. She’s been waiting for tomorrow her whole life. It’s gonna be a GREAT day! she lays down in bed and sits there for hours, unable to sleep due to the excitement flowing through her.
*I’m finally gonna be a REAL police officer… I can start making the world a better place, just like mom and dad*
Finally she drifts off to sleep.
The next day she’s awake at 6AM sharp, bags packed, she dons her blue uniform and heads down to the stage area to help setup chairs. guests and recruits start to slowly fill the seats and soon thereafter, the ceremony begins. Judy takes the stage, stepping up to the podium with Nick by her side, she taps the microphone before addressing the crowd.
”Hello Zootopia Police Academy, my name is ZPD Chief, Judy Wilde. I am proud to be here today to honor all of these amazing recruits, and oficially grant them the title, of ZPD officers. This is my senior officer, Nick Wilde”
*COUGH, COUGH* “HUSBAND” *COUGH* Nick snickers.
Judy lets out a nervous chuckle “yes… when we’re not on duty, he’s also my husband… but for today, he’ll be handing out the badges to our new officers. So withour further ado… lets make some officers”
out of range of the microphone Nick whispers “pretty sure we already did that 24 years ago, carrots”
Judy leans away from the mic “NICK!... behave yourself”
”alright, alright…”
Judy calls names up on stage one by one for an hour straight, until finally, the last name on the list.
”Dahlia Wilde!”
the crowd applauds as Lia walks up on stage and stands at attention, Nick steps up and pins the badge on her chest.
”you deserve this, kiddo… we’re very proud of you”
Judy turns around and sees Nick pin the badge in Lia’s chest and her lip starts to quiver. She turns back to the crowd.
”and…. and that’s…. that….” she just starts sniffling “these recruits… will…*sniff* will be…” she just starts bawling.
Nick steps up to the podium and guides Judy towards Lia, where she hugs and wails tears of joy, Nick grabs the microphone.
”alright everyone, that’s the show, nothing left to see, you know how bunnies get, always emotional… don’t forget to tip your waitresses and all that, bye everyone” he leaves the mic for only a second before going back to it “oh.. and uh.. congratulations, and all that..”
He returns to Judy and Lia, Judy sobbing through words.
”I’M… JUST.. SO.. PROUD OF YOU HONEY…” as she hugs Lia tight.
”thanks, mom….”
”we’re both proud of you, sweetheart… you’re gonna do great things for this city” Nick says.
”I can’t wait for my first day”
Judy wipes the tears from her eyes and tries her best to clear up her voice. “roll call is 7AM sharp tomorrow morning…. DON’T be late”
”I won’t be…”
”do you have a place to stay?” asks Nick
”I was… uh.. gonna just stay with a friend for a few months until I find a suitable house”
”nonsense, you can stay at our house, you still have a room there” says Judy
”are you sure?”
”of course”
”alright… thanks, you guys..”
”okay, now grab your stuff and lets go get some lunch, I’m starving” Nick says eagerly.
They load up and leave the academy, have a nice family lunch at a nearby diner. Nick drops Judy off at the ZPD before he and Dahlia head to the house. as they step in the door, Nick drops her bags in the living room.
”Welcome back home, Dolly… I’m sure you remember where your room is”
Dahlia takes a look around, It had been a while since she’d been to her parents house. All the family pictures on the wall, Grandma and Grandpa Hopps, old memories, and finally, her room. As the door swung open, she’s hit with a wave of nostalgia, she hasn’t been in this room since she was a teenager, and it hasn’t changed a bit, still posters of boy bands plastering the walls, even her same old bedspread.
”you guys uh…. never cleaned out this room, huh?”
”well… if you’d ever bothered to come get your crap.. we might’ve”
”noted” she says as she tears the old posters down from the walls.
”you go ahead and get settled in, I’m gonna head to work.. if I’m much later your mother will dock my pay”
”she wouldn’t do that”
”I don’t know… she takes that job pretty seriously… you’ll find out…” he grabs her and plants a kiss on her forehead “love ya, Dolly…”
”Love you, dad… have a good day”
Nick heads out, leaving Dahlia alone in the house. She gets settled in and unpacks her bags, hanging up her uniform for tomorrow morning, giddy with excitement about what adventures her first day could bring. She pulls out the badge, brushing her thumb across crest on the front, the golden surface glints in the light.
*Police Officer*
*ZPD*
*Serve And Protect*
*Wilde*
The name on that badge felt like a mountain she was in the shadow of. living up to the legends of Zootopia Nick and Judy Wilde was a monumental task, but she was undeterred and determined to reach that peak and plant her flag too.
”I’ll make this city proud… I swear”
