    Summary

Of the many self-sustaining machinations of the human body, this is perhaps the most important: its congenital affinity for interoception, upon which a system for this eighth sense is built, cells upon cells created and built into the organs that function as guard, shepherd, and doctor. Today, Celeste’s body tells her that she has a need, and it burns in her like cancer, clawing at the bars of her ribcage first, before prying each bone to take apart the enclosure and metastasizing outward, following the flow of blood in her veins.

This need, still unnamed, is perhaps what pushed her out of bed today, what called upon her to stop by the local bakery and purchase a basket of warm bread to share with her lover, to stroll along the streets and bask in the first golden rays of the morning.

This need—only now, standing before him, does Celeste see that it bears the face of Alastor Moreau.
