Chapter 1: 7:00 A.M

Chapter Text

The ER was packed as usual with people practically standing on top of each other just waiting to be seen. Of course there is a crowd around the nurse complaining about the wait time and asking why people who came in after get in first and the nurses always say the same thing, "we see people who need more immediate attention."

Night shift is handing off patients to day shift and you can tell they had one hell of a night and are ready to just hit the sack.

"Dr. Santos this is Gino, he needs to stay here and rest until he can get a room in the ICU and he needs checked on every now in then to make sure he isn't sezing, he is sleeping right now," Dr Ellis informs Santos.

"Okay, no problem. Make sure to get some sleep. You're not pulling another double right?" Santos questions with worrie.

"No, I'm not. And I will get some sleep, don't you worry" Ellis smiles tiredly in response then walks away to check up on her patients before she leaves.

Santos makes rounds checking up on patients and discharging some others while charting in between so she can actually get out at her scheduled time.

While she's doing so she can see from the corner of her eye that Langdon is walking over to her and she immediately turns in the opposite direction. He has been trying to talk to her since the day he got back from rehab but she still doesn't believe he has changed nor has she forgiven him for stealing the meds.

Langdon knows he screwed up but he wants to at least talk to Santos. He knows he shouldn't be here, but what can he say? This job makes him feel him, without it he wouldn't know what to do. Can this job be stressful? Of course it is, but knowing he can help people is what makes him complete.

Both Santos and Langdon continue to make their rounds, Stantos making sure she was nowhere near Langdon like he had a deathly disease.

While Santos is doing more charting Whitaker comes up to her.

"Hey huckleberry, do you need something?" She raises her eyebrow without looking up and still typing.

"No, I don't need anything. But are you still avoiding Landon? Because I'm pretty sure he wants to speak with you," Whitaker replies while messing with the losse thread on his scrubs.

"I swear if I have to hear his name or see his face one more time I'm going to punch him. It's not even an hour into the shift," Santos groans.

"Well you work with him so that's going to be pretty hard avoiding Langd- uh him," Whitaker tries to joke.

Joy walks over to the two who are bickering and interjects by saying, "Hey isn't it pretty quiet? At least the traumas?" She immediately realizes what she just said, "Shit."

All the nurses and doctors who heard it all groaned.

Dana picks up the red phone as it starts ringing almost instantly.

"Three traumas coming in! Two are going to have to be in the same room or find an empty room" Dana yells out.

"You couldn't have waited till after the nursing home patients come in?" Santos says as she runs to put a protective layer over her scrubs then out to the ambulance bay along with Mel, Whitaker, Langdon, Mckay, Robby, Javadi, and Joy. As well as some nurses.

The first trauma pulls in and Mel, Whitaker, and Joy take it.

As the second one pulls in Mckay and Javadi take it.

That leaves the last one to Robby, Santos and Langdon. But it doesn't come in immediately after the other two which lead to very awkward silence between the three doctors.

"15 year old female, sezing from overdose on oxycodone," one of the EMTs say as they hand off the girl to Robby, Langdon, and Santos.

They rush into the second trauma room that they need to share with Mckay and Javadi.

As this is all going on nursing home patients are coming in. While the doctors work on the traumas the nurses help the nursing home patients as well as they can.

The noise from the 5 doctors plus 3 nurses in the second trauma room makes it hard to think but one second of delay could lead to the death of a person.

Any case of overdose hits Langdon hard but it also makes him want to give 200% rather then 110%.

If you think about it Robby, Santos and Langdon working on a child who overdosed were the perfect mix of doctors for this. Santos and Robby seem to care for kids and the overdose hits Langdon with the appreciation for the other two and his strong desire to help those like him.

"She's crashing!" Langdon yells as Santos starts compressions and Robby gets the defibrillator.

They try and try for 10 minutes but it didn't add any progress.

"7:47," Santos quietly says not looking at either of the other doctors.

"I'll talk to her parents you two take care of the nursing home patients for now. Also check up on your other patients," Robby directs them as he takes of his blue gloves and dumps them in the trash.

As Santos makes her way to the nursing home patients she looks back seeing the parents of the girl crying as Robby tells them. She couldn't imagine losing a child. She can imagine losing someone close to themselves though because of her best friend.

This shift has barely started but how much worse could it really get?
