Work Text:
Ah, yes, winter. Wemmbu and Egg didn’t like winter.
Mainly because they both didn’t like the cold that much; Egg always got sick from it, and that meant Wemmbu had to suffer at school alone. But did that stop them from going outside to hang out? No.
As long as there wasn’t too much snow, and they didn’t stay out for too long, they still went out. It was their tradition to do something practically everyday (it also meant their parents didn’t complain about them never going outside or something).
Even if they did hate the temperature and endless whiteness that winter normally came with, they enjoyed staring at snowflakes fall. It was pretty, they could give it that. Rain and mist were better though, in Wemmbu’s opinion. Egg preferred being able to lay in the grass on a warm day and just stare at the cloud.
Anyways!
Right now, they were just walking around. They planned to go downtown a little, but eventually decided not to. Mainly because they didn’t want to get caught in the supposed snowfall that would have happened once they got there. Also because Wemmbu knew that Parrot was going to be there, and they weren’t on the best terms right now.
“Dude why do we keep going out when it’s this cold,” Egg complained.
“It’s not as bad as yesterday, at least,” Wemmbu shrugged.
Yesterday was a nightmare- below zero and rather icy roads. Unfortunately it was also on a Sunday, so no skipping school. Today though the ice had been salted away and the temperature went up to a wonderful.. Five degrees fahrenheit.
Still, they kept walking. Talking aimlessly as usual. There wasn’t anything that big to talk about, besides the incident between Wemmbu, Parrot, and Flame. But Wemmbu didn’t want to talk about it, so they didn’t.
“When are we planning to turn back?” Egg queried.
“Uuh- I don’t know,” Wemmbu shrugged, “up until we reach that stop sign?”
Egg looked where Wemmbu was pointing. Just about five more minutes until they got there, that would work. “Alright, cause my fingers are lowkey going numb.”
“Bro you literally have gloves on-” Wemmbu rolled his eyes.
“They’re not that good for winter,” Egg stated.
“No shit; they’re not winter gloves,” Wemmbu snorted. “If you get sick you’re screwed.”
“Don’t we have a test tomorrow or something?”
“Yeah, exactly why you’d be screwed.”
Oh hey, they’re at the stop sign. Now they just had to walk like thirty minutes to get back. They really needed to stop walking so far. Especially in this weather. You’d think Egg would get a little more resistant to it as time went on, but they had never ended up happening. It was annoying as hell, honestly.
At some point Egg started trembling from the cold. He said nothing, as he didn’t really notice. Wemmbu on the other hand noted it as soon as it started. And without a single word he took off his thick jacket and threw it at Egg.
“I- wha- bro?” Egg squeaked, catching the jacket in confusion.
“You were trembling,” Wemmbu shrugged. “I also have more tolerance than you, it’ll be fine.”
“Are you like- sure?” Egg asked hesitantly, “Aren’t you going to be cold?”
“Yeah, but not as bad as you,” he rolled his eyes. “Stop being worried and wear it.”
“Alright..”
And so Egg put Wemmbu’s jacket over his own, giving him another layer. The warmth was noticeable only two minutes later. They did still walk a little faster, though. Even if Wemmbu probably wouldn’t get sick he would still be cold.
“You’re so selfless,” Egg snorted lightly.
“Not really,” Wemmbu hummed.
And he really wasn’t. He’d take a few more snacks than needed when someone offered, or buy himself one or two extra treats when his parents sent him to get something they missed when shopping. It was always rather subtle, but selfish nonetheless.
“Well you’re selfless when it comes to me,” Egg offered instead.
“Don’t flatter yourself,” he snickered. Though that was.. A little more accurate, Wemmbu supposed.
He would totally do the same thing again if he had too, though. Then again, this situation had happened once or twice last year already. And a few times when they were younger- but they kind of got lost that time so Egg really wasn’t doing well. It would probably happen later this year, too. Or a few times next year. Wemmbu would throw his coat at Egg however many times he needed it.
“What should we do tomorrow?” Wemmbu queried. It was mostly to get his mind off the chill that started to surround him.
“Something outside or inside?” Egg asked.
“Inside, probably.”
“Hmm.. Play some kind of game?”
“At whose house?”
“Mine, probably.”
“Alright,” Wemmbu shrugged. “What kind of game though? Online, card, that kind of thing.”
“Bro I’m not thinking that far ahead,” Egg chuckled.
“D’alright,” Wemmbu laughed.
~~~
By the time they got back Egg gave Wemmbu his jacket back. Partly because it was Wemmbu’s, and also because their parents would be confused on why Egg had an extra jacket/why Wemmbu was missing his. So they waved goodbye afterward, and entered their respective houses.
Egg sat by the fireplace for a bit while studying, flipping boredly through pages. He already knew the material, but figured to go through it since he didn’t have anything else to do. His homework was already done anyway, and he had time before dinner.
Wemmbu on the other hand headed toward his bedroom, and just laid on his bed for a while. He probably had an hour or so before dinner, half that time until one of his parents got home. He would probably try to do his homework during that time.
At some point the two of them called again. They really couldn’t stay separated for long, huh? Might be a little too dependent on one another, but it would be fine. Probably. ..Future problems!
For now they could just talk about random things for however long until one of them had to leave for dinner. They’d still get to see each other tomorrow anyways, assuming Egg didn’t get sick from the cold earlier.
