Chapter Text
Shen Yuan was a software engineer, but he didn’t exactly need to be a software engineer. He was the third son of a wealthy family, and after his two Geges had taken over the family business, there was basically no point in Shen Yuan and his Meimei to work anymore. Seriously, why did their lovely parents decide to have two more after the first successful two? So when the pre teens were told that they didn’t need to work, no one really fought the matter.
Despite that, Shen Yuan still kinda wanted to do things for a little extra money, almost always completely ignoring the pompous amounts of allowance he got each day. He truly really didn’t need it, but it was nice for him to go back on just in case he decides to try online gambling again, not that it went well the first two times, but he won 10 dollars from the third. As a software engineer, he usually charged the least amount of money possible. He didn’t exactly need it, and it was nice seeing game developer’s faces light up at hearing that Shen Yuan could comb through their code and easily pick out bugs and fix them for basically ten to thirty bucks for their entire game.
And on some days when he felt like the game was interesting enough, he would charge nothing and only ask to be able to play through the game for free, and he loved playing through those choose your own story games. They were fun, and there were so many endings he could choose from, so when he learnt that he was going to be assigned to a yandere dating sim pretty soon, you could just feel his excitement. His Meimei would be coming over the weekend to play it with him, and from what he learnt from her blabbering on the phone, a Yandere was a character who usually has a troubled past, and so quickly and obsessively attaches to the first person to show them kindness. They follow this person like a dog and look at them with rose coloured glasses.
He had watched a few streamers play these kinds of games, just to check it out if it was problematic or not. He wouldn’t want his name to be in the credits for something that he seriously didn’t feel comfortable being a part of. And they weren’t so bad. There were definitely roads that end up with you being with the Yandere, but there were some endings that end without the Yandere, which was lowkey refreshing. They always gave perfect background info on all the characters and made sure all of them had a feasible backstory that would explain everything they did and why they did it. Sometimes the Yandere would save Y/N from trouble, and Y/N would help the Yandere with panic attacks and learning what's right or wrong. Occasionally there was the offhanded death scene from Y/N or the other romantic interests you could go for. Shen Yuan liked those, very emotional, very tragic, very Romeo and Juliet coded. Once he was done fixing this code and having a small play through, his Meimei would play the rest of the game with him…
The title of the game was Bingpup Yandere Dating Sim, which, okay, first off, it isn’t very alluring of a title. He’ll have to make a couple notes for that later on. Though he heard that this was an Indie developer and understood that by the time that he had reached the part where he needed to make a title, he didn’t exactly feel like he had the patience to. He had his first call with the developer that night.
He was…most likely not okay, eye bags and all. The developer’s pseudonym was Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky, and this is his first game outside of his studio. Apparently they weren’t paying him enough and only needed him for art and not his true passion of writing scripts and code. The guy kinda just went on blabbering and venting for around an hour before Shen Yuan sighed and said, “If you shut up I’ll make it free.” The man quickly shut up, and Shen Yuan started asking questions about certain bugs that the dev was worried about, and after learning that, and the 20 different endings to the game, Shen Yuan got started.
There were plenty of bugs, but not as much as a usual indie developer would make in Shen Yuan’s experience. The cover art, along with the backdrops and characters and the character’s many sprites, were well drawn, though some looked like they were copy and pasted. Shen Yuan couldn’t exactly blame the guy. They were background characters, and he was probably burnt out. Once he finished with the code, he decided to just play a few chapters of the game. The start was alright. He got to meet the protagonist Yandere. He was a sweet boy, a little on the skinny side, but definitely would fill out if given the chance.
“This looks promising.”
It took hours, but Shen Yuan had played through all twenty endings…and it was a surprise to say it was fucking shit. All endings ended up with the Yandere! The female lead, which is the character that you play as, isn't even a female lead!! All paths, all choices end up with the protagonist that fell in love with you first having many, many other girlfriends, and you just have to let it happen! Despite the fact that on day two he was already promising to make you love him and only him, but apparently that meant that there was no way for himself to love you and only you.
In the credits it explained that it was because his obsession is too powerful for just one maiden, he decides to take them all. “One Maiden my ass!” Shen Yuan yelled. He knew that in most of these kinds of games that there would be more endings for the FL and ML together than there would be with the FL with any other person, but no. The FL ends up with the ML every single time, and the ML would end up with everybody else…the character designs were impeccable, and he could tell that Airplane wanted the players to look at the designs more than the non-existent backstories every other character was given.
Not even a compelling backstory for the Antagonist, who, by the way, wasn’t exactly a fucking antagonist. His name was Shen Qingqiu, vice president of the student council as a second year student. He had an amazing future ahead of him, with Ivy leagues already pressing for him to sign contracts. He was basically a tsundere when it comes to praise, but used head pats to fill in the gaps of his words and expressions. He was family friends with one of Luo Binghe’s favourite girlfriends, her name being Ning Yingying, and always protected her from any harm. They were like brother and sister, and after hearing about the crazed womaniser, he dreaded putting Ning Yingying in that kind of relationship.
And because he was standing in the way, and always telling Luo Binghe that he should back off, and that his harem wasn’t healthy, Luo Binghe killed the one person in the entire game with common sense…
Shen Yuan slammed his fist into his table, sending back Airplane his finished game and typing an honest review
{ this is a shit show of a fucking game you stupid fucking indie dev, I let you off because I felt bad but if this fucking game ever releases as it is, I’m gonna fucking come for you! You are a shitty dev and this is the shittiest shitty shit shit of a game! }
As Shen Yuan typed furiously, he took a bite of his meat bun and, in rage induced swallowing, forgot to chew
