Work Text:

You’ve been dating Robby for a while now. His shifts were horrible and most of the days he was just so exhausted, but you wouldn’t have it any other way.

You two rarely had time to be together just enjoying the day all spread on the couch, so that’s why that knocked on the door made you jump.

You were about to get up to see who it was but Robby hold you against himself so you couldn’t move. “We’re not waiting for anyone, just let it be, they must have knocked the wrong door” but just as he finished another knocked followed.

You finally detangled yourself from his brace and got up to see who dared to interrupt your peaceful and rare morning.

You only had a second to step aside when a rushed Jack Abbot stomped into your kitchen. “What are you doing here? it’s only 9:00 a.m.!” Robby groaned still sprawled on the couch.

Dr. Abbot, who you’ve already met a few times, didn’t even acknowledge Robby, focusing on you. “You have ruined everything” he said quite calmed.

After hearing that Robby did get up “Wow ok hold on! You can’t just come here and talk to her like that”.

You still were next to the door quite confused. “What on earth could I have possibly just ruined?”

“You said that Walsh could have feelings for me and now everything is wrong” he said kind of deflated and everything made sense, so you just started laughing.

“I can’t believe you just came here after your shift because of this, really” you said in between laughs. Robby’s puzzled face didn’t help your cause because it only made you laugh even more.

“It’s really not funny, you know” Abbot continued given you couldn’t stop, “I had three consultations with her today and every time I looked like an idiot ‘cause i couldn’t concentrate, all I was thinking was on what you said”.

“Oh don’t you dare to blame this on me, you were thinking about her! Not about what I told you” you finally managed “And don’t act like you have ever looked something different from an idiot when she’s around, I’ve seen you around her!”

Emery Walsh was the angel who helped you survive during high school in Philly. You were clumsy as fuck when you were a teenager and the now surgeon was always there like an anchor those years. There were days that you really thought that without Emery you would have lost your head from your body if that was ever possible, so it was really easy for you to follow her to Pittsburgh when she got a new job at the PTMC.

You still felt like you owned her your whole life and after her introducing you to Robby, you felt it even more. So when you saw the dynamic between her and Abbot, you knew it was your moment to pay your debt.

“Are you kidding me, brother? Did you really came here today on my day off just for this?” Robby said while he rubbed his face on his way to the coffee he left untouched when he woke up that morning.

“Oh come on it’s important…” Abbot started.

“Yeah, it actually is” you interrupted him, “because I’m right, she does have feelings for you”

“No, but… why?”

“Well that’s something you should ask her, not me”

“Yeah… I don’t get it either” Robby said absently sipping his coffee. Yo gave him an stern look who said ‘play nice’.

Jack, on the other part, started pacing the room till he slumped down on the couch giving his back to Robby who was leaning on the counter.

For a doctor who had served in the military and watches tragedies every day he looked in real distress.

You knew, via Robby, that his wife died some years ago, you weren’t sure if she also was a soldier or if it was for another reason, but Jack never dated again.

You really felt sorry for him, he was an amazing friend to Robby and a great doctor and he also made you feel welcomed for the very first time. He just didn’t felt that he had the right to love again and that broke your heart.

Walsh was always so reserved when talking about love, always said that her only love was surgery (gosh surgeons…) but under all that armour you knew she had a big ass heart.

It was painful and quite amusing seeing the two of them dance around each other without noticing they were already in love.

“Hey… you know I would have never said anything if I wasn’t sure about it” you said seating next to him “you don’t need to have everything figured it out right now, but why don’t you talk to her and try to figure it out together?”

He remained silent for a minute before getting up with a loud clap that made Robby jumped and spilled some of the coffee. He looked so decisive and scared at the same time but rambled about something real fast and left, leaving the two of you alone and disoriented.

“Can we go back to the couch and lock the door now?” Robby pleaded.

The next time you saw the two of them together was at one of the parties you had at your house at the beginning of the summer. You were preparing some mojitos while listening to Robby giving you hints about moving with you anytime soon when you looked up through the window and saw Abbot handing a beer to a very smiley Emery Walsh, who thanked him with a peck on the lips.
