Chapter Text
Surgeon sighed, walking out of room 3 after helping nurse put out a death ritual, there was another surgery that needed to be done, the 4th one this shift.
“How unlucky,” Paramedic appeared next to him, the carefree deer would normally be to busy teaching the Intern how to treat certain patients, but it seemed like he found a way to make time for Surgeon.
“Already been a long shift hm?” He played with the stethoscope that hung around Surgeon’s neck.
Surgeon sighed, it was only shift 9 and yet it felt like he was doing way more work than usual, way to many anomalies were showing up lately.
”Hey, you think you can do me a favor?” Surgeon asked.
”Whatcha need?”
”I need you to go check the surgery room for any hiders, I don’t feel like dealing with them mid surgery, and I need to go return the taser.”
”Easy, I’ll be right back,” he took a swig from his cola and sped down the hall to go check.
Surgeon smiled before walking over to the check in office, walking past secretary on their way there. He was teaching Intern all the different ways to spot an anomaly.
Surgeon eyed the coffee maker, it would probably be nice to have one right now, but he was in a rush, perhaps he’d take it after the surgery.
Surgeon put the Taser back into its glass container and walked out of the check in room, almost running into paramedic on the way out.
”Oh! Hey, no Hiders as far as I could tell. There is a eye monster though.” Paramedic chirped, clearly still energized by the cola he took. But he was a but winded to, Surgeon just brushed it off.
“Thank you, I’ll lose my mind if I get jumpscared by another one of those things.”
He patted the Paramedic’s back, walking past him to go finally do that surgery, but he felt someone grab the back of his shirt and tug him back.
“Hm?”
Paramedic seemed embarrassed for some reason, shuffling his feet before he asked, “can I have a kiss?”
Surgeon could feel his own face flush underneath his own mask, “I mean… sure.”
He pulled his mask down a bit pressed his muzzle into his cheek, he had forgotten how nice he smelt, probably because it’s been so ling since they really did anything together. The hospital had so many busy days they barely even got to talk.
He kissed his cheek again, a bit lower this time, slowly making his way down to his chin. He could feel how paramedic got hotter the lower he went, making him want to lower and lower.
“Awww.”
He had just made his way down to his neck before noticing Head Nurse watching the two. Surgeon pulled back, embarrassed at how careless he had gotten just from one kiss.
Paramedic didn’t seem nearly as embarrassed as him though, he seemed more disappointed than anything.
Surgeon cleared his throat, trying regain his professionalism, “I should probably attend to that surgery now.”
”Alright, see you on our lunch break,” Paramedic waved as Surgeon turned to go to room 8.
Surgeon walked up and set up an IV bag next to the patient, who was to be sweating and all fidgety, “Is this gonna hurt?”
”Not after I out you to sleep, I promise you this surgery is a simple one, you’ll be awake quicker than you might think.”
Surgeon had instructed the patient to keep their eyes shut while he got ready. He didn’t want them spotting the monstrosity on the roof, so he just told them it was because of “legal reasons”.
The patient seemed to relax at that, Surgeon nodded and put the needle into their arm, “you should feel a bit drowsy after a while, try not to resist it.”
Surgeon left the room to retrieve some eyedrops to take care of the eye monster, it would take some of his sanity, but it was better than having to deal with tears dropping onto his head throughout the surgery.
By the time he cane back the patient was sound asleep, he set up a timer, 45 seconds. H would need to get this over with is 45 seconds or else the patient was pretty much dead. He let out a sigh and started the timer.
He then realized he was an idiot because he started the timer before dealing with the eye monster. He groaned, it was just a minor time loss, nothing he couldn’t make up, he looked up, feeling an intense migraine hit him as he tried applying the eyedrops.
[- 5 Sanity]
Maybe it was his fault for not hearing it’s raspy breathing, or even double checking the room, but right when he was almost finished, a hider ran at him. He couldn’t even yelp before he was knocked onto the ground.
[-10 Sanity]
He hit the ground hard, but before he could even take a breath, he could feel even more of his sanity getting drained from him. Since he felt onto his back, he was staring directly at the eyes.
[-5 Sanity]
[-5 Sanity]
[-5 Sanity]
[-5 Sanity]
He writhed on the floor, normally he was pretty good at avoiding anomalies. But since he rarely ever dealt with sanity losses, he never really bothered to manage how low his sanity got either.
When he started the Surgery he had a meagerly 35% of it.
Now he only had 5%.
He finally tore his gaze away, panting on the floor.
”What on earth!” He wheezed, rubbing his forehead as he looked around, for some reason, the entire room seemed to be greyscale, the color was drained out of everything, his hand’s were sweaty and his eyes ached for some reason.
Maybe these were common for low sanity, not that he would know, he tried standing, his legs threatened to crumble under his weight but he persevered, using the desk of surgery supplies next to him ti stabilize himself.
The surgery.
He forgot the Surgery.
He whipped around, but by then it was already to late, only 7 seconds remained.
”No…” he mumbled, but he knew it was over. All he could do was watch the seconds tick down.
3…
2…
1…
0.
Suddenly the roar of an anomaly roared and echoed throughout the room, startling him and making his fall back onto the floor.
An announcement rang throughout the hospital:
A patient has died, but it was an Anomaly!
It was an anomaly, not a patient.
But he still felt guilty, although he felt alot of things right now, the more prevalent one was confusion. What even happened?
He hardly registered Intern slowly opening the door, walking over and staring down at Surgeon. They stared at him for a while, nobody else was here yet, but they didn’t even call for help, they just mumbled, “I’ll get you a coffee.”
Right as they walked out everybody else burst in, first Head Nurse and Secret Agent, then everybody else. In second they all surrounded Surgeon.
”What happened?” Nurse muttered, Head Nurse simply shrugged, “I’m not to sure… do we have any coffee?”
”Intern went to go get it.” Dr. Harlow announced as he walked to to check out the scene.
“How much sanity do you have?” Secret Agent asked.
Surgeon shuddered as he realized how low it had gotten himself, “…3%”
The room let out a collective gasp of shock, “How did you even let it get so low?” Nurse blurted out, probably only realizing how insensitive she sounded after.
Surgeon’s face burnt with shame, but he was still wondering what on earth happened, and where was Paramedic?
“Paramedic…” he muttered as Intern walked back in with a full mug of coffee. He offered it over, although he didn’t do it enthusiastically to say the least.
Surgeon immediately gulped down every last drop of it, feeling ever so slightly better after, but still shitty. Atleast bow he could think clearly.
He was hit by a hider, which was pretty odd since he told Paramedic to deal with them for him.
On queue Paramedic finally creeped into the room, he slowly approached Surgeon, his eyes widening as he realized how disheveled he looked.
”Oh my god…” Paramedic mumbled under his breath, but before anyone could say much, Dr. Harlow decided he wanted to insert himself into a conversation nobody asked him to be apart of.
”Alright, no more gushing over him, he survived, and he’s lucky it was just an anomaly, now les get back to work everyone, the bells at the check in are ringing. Chop chop.”
Everyone let out a collective groan as the doctor spoke, slowly filing out of the room, except for Paramedic.
”…I’ll give you two a moment to… reconcile before you get back to work.” He finally left the room, leaving the two alone.
