    Summary

Sai didn’t really understand other people.

This was something he understood well about himself, as much as he might feign innocence about his lack of social skills. After all, if there was anything Sai couldn’t afford to be, it was stupid. Albeit, some might argue his inability to interact with others was stupidity.

He’d tried, in the past months he spent as a member of team seven, to learn. He’d made jokes, adjusted them, smiled all the time, tried to learn when it was and wasn’t appropriate to smile, learn when to make eye contact, learn what was too much (2.5 seconds) or too little (anything under a second) of it. He’d made improvements in every area, as far as he could tell. Sai had even begun to think that he, Naruto, and Sakura were truly friends. Naruto’s optimism was so inspiring that even a barely-human tool like Sai had started to think he, too, could share a bond with his fellow shinobi. That he, too, could be… a friend.

    Maybe even have a friend.

Maybe even have more than one.
