Work Text:
So before TADC there was I show that I was into.

The plot is a self-pitying orphan rescues a drowning weirdo and gets recruited to work among Japan’s best weirdos– I meant detectives, totally… Along the way, they get chased by the government and I think they were fist-fighting god at one point…
Also, all the characters are named after authors, so Edgar Allan Poe is hopelessly gay; Fyodor Dostoyevsky straps a bomb to a child; and Bram Stoker’s only goal in life is sleep and spotify premium.
We also have a guy named Sigma.

Watching the show, Jax has always reminded me of Dazai.

Yup, that's him, my beautiful man, right there.
Both of them have heartbreaking pasts and mentalities that they cover up with humor and pranks. Both of them were part of a trio that ended terribly. Both of them have broken the 4th wall (anime Dazai has, at least). Both of them use the same targets for their pranks and shenanigans. Both of them sort of believe that they “aren’t human”. Both of them are suicidal. Both of them are the same age. Both of them are believed to have the same mbti (ENTP). Also, their voices in Japanese sound similar.
Or I could just be delulu.
What’s interesting is that while Jax reminds me of Dazai, Dazai doesn’t remind me of Jax. I think it’s because the Jax-iness of Dazai is only a fragment of Dazai’s issues.
Also, Dazai probably WOULD willingly put on a maid dress.
Like, have you SEEn the official art?

Long story short, Jax always reminded me of Dazai… And then Episode 6 happened.
Jax’s reluctance to open up hit a little too close to home as an Akutagawa kinnie.

Aku's the one on the far left, btw...
Ryuunosuke Akutagawa or that one guy who sounds like he’s holding back a british accent (bro, I love his english dub voice actor, you can tell he loves the character he’s playing)
His reluctance to open up is likely because he’s been alone for so long, he often had to look out for others at a young age, which got solidified when Dazai became his mentor and abuser. Akutagawa also has a sh[bloop!]t ton of pride that he can’t swallow.
(I can’t relate guys, I can’t relate…….. /I’m lying)
So yeah, I projected that onto Jax. I doubt anyone would've noticed but the line "I don't need your help, I don't need anyone's help!" is a bsd line... I actually found where the line is again (book.4), but it's worded... way differently, so now I'm kinda worried my brain lied to me... Oh and my emetophobia. He has that too.
