In the lamplight of their bedroom, Deniss thinks that Chris looks adorable with reading glasses on. The warm glow washes over him and makes him look impossibly softer as he reads aloud.
Every night, Deniss asks “One more page?” at the end of each chapter. Chris must think that he enjoys the story, and the story is good, but Deniss is more fond of the gentle tenor of Chris’ voice.
The safest place on Earth exists right here. Pressed against Chris’ side with Stephane curled beside him, already quietly asleep, Deniss lets Chris’ voice blanket him, ferrying him into sleep.
