Work Text:
Lewis’ birthday was coming right up and George wanted to do something special for him. Lewis was training this morning and this gave George some time to bake a cake for Lewis. Trying to find a good vegan recipe for a birthday cake was hard, then trying to find the ingredients in Monaco was even harder. George is pretty sure he had enough ingredients to at least make a small cake, so he heads back to their apartment. George quickly realized that vegan baking is harder than normal baking, and considering he not very good at baking in general this is really testing him in every way possible.
George was starting to panic now. Lewis was going to be back at any moment and all he has to show is a messy kitchen and a half under-baked, half burnt cake and not enough ingredients to make another one. George felt like crying, he just wanted to do something nice for his boyfriend and instead just made a mess. George was still standing in the middle of the kitchen, staring at the half burnt puddle that was supposed to be a cake when Lewis came home.
“George?” Lewis has never seen their kitchen such a mess and George looking so upset. George’s head snapped up to see Lewis in the doorway.
“You’re home early.” Was all George said.
“Did you get into a fight with the kitchen?” Lewis crossed the room, standing beside George. Up close he could really seen the damage and was wondering what George did to their poor kitchen.
“I was trying to make you a cake for your birthday, but baking a vegan cake from scratch when you can barely bake in the first place is a lot harder than I thought it would be.”
“George you didn’t have to do all this for me, I don’t need a cake or anything special. All I need is you.” Lewis pressed a quick kiss to George’s cheek.
“That’s good because your cake is currently a puddle that’s burnt around the edges.” George was still looking sadly at the sorry excuse of a cake in the pan.
“Do you want to make another one together? Maybe together we can make something that’s edible.”
“I used everything. This was attempt three and believe it or not get best out of all of them, which I feel like says something about me and my baking abilities.” George continued to look at the mess in front of him, he really was hoping to have all evidence of this train wreck gone by the time Lewis came home.
“Ok, we can order something from the vegan bakery then, no more baking disasters.”
“There’s a vegan bakery in town!” George exclaimed, turning to look at Lewis.
“Yeah, open up not too long ago. I’ve tried it a couple times, not too bad.”
“I looked online but couldn’t find one, that’s why I tried making one for you instead. I feel so stupid.” George looked down at the floor, cheeks pink in embarrassment.
“George it’s okay. I find it very sweet that you wanted to bake me a cake from scratch yourself. It means a lot to me that you even tried.” Lewis reached out, grabbing George’s waist and pulling him in for a hug.
“Thanks Lew.”
“Let’s get this cleaned up and I’ll pull up the bakery’s instagram and we can check out the menu and order something. Sound like a plan?”
“But it’s your birthday, I should be taking care of you and doing stuff for you, not the other way around.”
“George I love taking care of you, no matter what day it is.” Lewis brushed some stray hair out of George’s face before pressing a kiss against his cheek.
The cleaned up the mess together before heading to the couch where George curled up against Lewis’ front so they could order some treats together. George ended up falling asleep with his face pressed against Lewis’ stomach, the failed attempt at baking really took everything out of him.
