Work Text:
Today was a slow day. It allowed Secretary to take his time checking in patients. Being more careful when checking in patients, meant less anomalies slipping through. Less anomalies, meant less danger, and less bullets being used. This was how Secret Agent liked it.
It didn't matter that he had instincts that allowed him to guess anomalies without fail. Running around shooting them all got tiring fast. Though, not shooting anyone was boring too. Not that he went around looking for people to shoot! It's just boring doing absolutely nothing.
So, when there was a break in the patients checking in, Secret Agent decided to get a little bit silly. "Hello, my name is Secret Agent. I'd like to check in as a patient." Secretary snickered, not expecting Secret Agent to be the type to mess around like that. He stamped the blank piece of paper that Secret Agent pulled out, and snapped a photo, going along with the joke.
Secretary froze when he glanced at the photo.
"Is something wrong?" Secret Agent tilted his head, confused. The only response he got was Secretary standing up and grabbing a cup of coffee. "...Secretary? Are you okay?" He was genuinely getting worried now. Secret Agent leaned over the counter to get a better look at Secretary, lifting up the photo once he felt it under his paw.
It was grainy, blurry, and absolutely terrifying.
"Oh- I-" he shuddered, despite the photo being of himself. Never had he expected this. He didn't feel safe anymore. Well, not that he felt perfectly safe in the first place. But, his own co-worker is filling him with fear. He shouldn't be afraid of his own co-workers! "What... are you going to do..?"
Tears formed in his eyes. This felt like the end. Either of his life, or at the very least, of his career. "...Get out." Secretary never even turned back whilst commanding Secret Agent to leave. His ears were flat against his head. He lost his job, and his friends, over a fact that he never even knew about.
Most animals probably would've found out earlier in their lives. But as a carnivore that never missed a meal, it just never really came up. He glanced back at the hospital one final time before leaving. What was he to do now? What is one to do when they find out they're an anomaly?
It hadn't even been a day, and he already missed the hospital. He missed his friends. Why should he have to leave, anyways? He never hurt anyone! Well, any patients, at least. All he had done since leaving the hospital, was walk around mindlessly. How long had it been? He wasn't watching the time.
But his stomach was.
Maybe he should have been more careful to keep up his streak of never missing a meal. Especially now that he knew he was an anomaly. Everyone knew that anomalies couldn't control themselves when they got too hungry. And here he was, hungry.
The smell of blood reached his nose. It just added to his hunger. Glancing in the direction the scent came from, he realized it was the hospital. Oh no.
It didn't matter if he was cast out, he didn't want to eat his friends. But food... He was so... hungry... He shook his head, trying to stay in control. But he realized he was already right outside the door. Slowly, he entered. Intern was the one at the counters this shift, it seemed.
"Oh, hey Secret Agent!" they smiled at him, "Where have you been? I haven't seen you!" He just stared, one hand on his stomach, and the other supporting him on the wall. "Well... Welcome back! I guess?"
He stalked closer, "Where's... Secretary?" The clueless rabbit happily pointed in the direction of the dog, "He's helping treat minor injuries over at rooms 1-5 today!" Secret Agent nodded, placing a paw on his mouth to keep it shut. Intern wasn't the one he was after.
Slowly, he walked in the direction of rooms 1-5. He was close enough now that he could smell that pesky dog. Just a little further... Blue fur entered his vision, and he immediately lunged. His mouth was wide open, full skinwalker nature on display. He didn't care. He was too hungry to.
"Seeecreeetaaarrrryyy..." Secret Agent pinned the other animal down. The smell of fear was... delicious... "Wh- Secret Agent? Look, I'm sorry!" Oh, how kind of the meal to season itself with salty tears. The struggle added to the taste as well. He leaned closer, his mouth inches away from the feast.
CHOMP!
And with that, he was gone. Secret Agent backed away in terror of what he had done. But the hunger begged for more. Why waste such perfectly good food? He couldn't stop his body reaching out for more. Others had arrived to view the scene, and all he could do was cry.
He didn't stop until there was nothing left. Licking his paws clean from the blood, he glanced up at the small crowd that had gathered. Even if there was a chance for acceptance before, there certainly wasn't any now. He ate someone, and not just anyone, but a friend. "I'm sorry..."
Slowly, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his gun. The others backed away, but he wasn't going to shoot them. Instead, he presented his gun to them. Head lowered, paws face up, gun on top. A life for a life was only fair.
The gun was taken from his paws. What happened next was completely up to them.
