A Place to Rest

Summary:

Sam has always believed that the best thing a person can be is useful.

If Mr. Frodo needs a warm blanket, a steady shoulder, or simply someone nearby through the night, then that's what Sam will be.

Notes:

I always imagined that, after everything they'd been through, the hobbits would naturally gravitate toward sleeping close together again. But I also think Frodo, after Mordor, would only truly feel at ease sleeping beside Sam.

Which, in turn, probably leaves him feeling rather guilty.

Work Text:

Sam had always thought that being there for others was a good thing.

Not because he wished to trail after folk wherever they went, but because everyone ought to be useful where they could.

That was simply how the world worked.

So he tried not to flush, though he could feel the warmth creeping into his cheeks.

Mr. Frodo needed this. He'd plainly argued with himself before asking, and that alone made Sam determined not to refuse.

It wouldn't do to make him feel foolish.

Mr. Merry and Mr. Pippin might grumble about losing their share of the blanket tonight, but they'd understand.

Surely they would.

Swallowing, Sam carefully worked a stubborn knot free from Mr. Frodo's curls.

Mr. Frodo neither whimpered nor spoke. He only hummed, leaning a little closer until his head rested comfortably against Sam's shoulder beneath the blanket.

Sam didn't combust.

Nor did he burst into tears.

He was a pillow. A warm place to rest. A bit of home, if Mr. Frodo needed one.

And if that thought brought a quiet smile to his face...

Well, there were worse things.
