Chapter Text
Love just wasn't for Secret Agent! He could never understand it. Why would you legally bind yourself to someone? It was weird. Everyone would describe it as fluttering in your chest or butterflies in your stomach. What does that even mean? Agent had given up on trying to understand the concept a little while ago, and it felt more freeing! Being able to not question himself every time he saw some other people being romantic.
7. 12 Animal Hospital- 7:30am (Secret Agent POV)
Agent didn't usually take the day shifts, but today the new intern was coming in, and everyone had pressured him into coming and meeting them. He was in his usual suit and tie, nothing special. The day was about to start when Intern walked in. Agent saw them and gave them a small wave. Nurse went to greet them properly as everyone was getting prepared for another inevitably busy day. She showed Intern around, and then the day started.
The first patient was a blue rabbit, Intern was being shown how to detect an anomaly by Secretary. Everything was running smoothly. Nurse and Head Nurse were currently waiting for patients to come in. Secret Agent didn't have much of a job, as long as Secretary was doing his job properly. The rabbit walked into room 1. Intern was shown how to care for a patient now.
The day went by quite calmly, until 11.
There was a car accident down the road, and lots of people got hurt. People were rushing in, Security and Secret Agent were attempting to capture all of the anomalies coming in, but they missed a couple. After the chaos, patients were being treated. Secret Agent went to check up on Intern. Intern was waiting for the computer and didn't think to look behind themself. The green cat that had been let in was a shape-shifter, about to get Intern. Intern heard Agent come in and turned around to face the mouth full of sharp teeth headed for their head. A wave of panic went through Agent's body as he fumbled around for his gun. Intern backed against the counter as the cat got closer. Agent shot at the cat as he pulled out his gun, fearing that he was too late. But apparently he had been just in time. The cat fell to the floor and the body got properly disposed of. Secret Agent let out a breath he didn't know he was holding and rushed to Intern. "You okay?" Agent said, managing a calm tone despite his racing heart.
"Y-yeah, I should be. Thanks." Intern's voice was soft. The poor rabbit looked terrified. Nurse had heard the commotion and peeked in.
"What happened here?" She said, glancing at the green blood that still stained the floor. "Intern, you look like you could use a quick break, why don't you show them where the break room is, Agent?
Agent nodded. "Follow me." He said as he led Intern to the break room. Intern sat down at a table and put their head down on it. Agent watched carefully before getting called back out to be on guard. As he left, he glanced back at Intern's figure. "If you ever need any help, call for me, kay?" Agent couldn't help trying to comfort Intern, even if it was badly. Intern nodded and smiled.
7. 12 Animal Hospital- 7:30am (Intern POV)
Intern had just landed a spot as a new intern at a hospital downtown! Every application said something about anomalies..? They were typically very scared, taking this role would only make the anxiety worse… but maybe today could work out well!
Intern had made it to the bus stop and was waiting for it to arrive. That was when the notice that the bus would be late popped up. But time wouldn't stop moving! They had to find a way to downtown, and quick. Intern searched for something- anything! Being late to your first shift wasn't a good look.. They found a train headed to downtown in 10 minutes and ran to the station just in time. They made it on. Intern breathed a sigh of relief and checked their phone. They scrolled until their stop came. Intern rushed out of the train while glancing at the time. They had 15 minutes till the shift started.
Pulling up a map, Intern headed to the hospital. They'd made it just as the clock hit 7:30. Phew! Intern walked in and observed the building. When you first walked in, you'd be hit with the smell of chemicals and cheap air freshener. Intern didn't mind too much. As they walked they saw a black cat in a suit wave slightly at them. Who was that? And why were they so pretty..?
Nevertheless, a pink dog came up and introduced herself as Nurse. She showed Intern around the place. The shop, that she handled, the rooms, and the surgery room- which Intern had been instructed not to try alone- the medicines, x-ray room, the basics. As it was 8, everyone started working. Intern was told to stay with Secretary for now and learn how to do the check in. The black cat from before was lurking in the corner of the station while everyone else rushed to position. The cat was so.. mysterious. Something about them made you curious, no matter what.
The first patient walked in. It was a blue rabbit. Secretary walked Intern through it all. "If you can't tell immediately if they're an anomaly or not, you can stamp their papers. Now take a picture and process it on the computer, photos usually reveal them. Would you go ahead and check the security cameras for me?"
Intern nodded and moved to check, everything looked good. They cane back to Secretary and listened again. "If everything checks out you can go ahead and print the name-tag and send them to a room, got it?" Secretary made sure Intern understood it perfectly before sending him off to learn how to care for a patient. The white cat, Head Nurse, taught Intern to find the diagnosis using the computer. Nurse returned with the medicines and the patient rested for a bit and left healed!
The rest of the morning really blurred together as Intern worked two jobs at once, the black cat still in the check-in. When the day slowed down Intern was talking to Nurse.
"Who's the black cat in the lobby area?.." Intern said, letting their curiosity get the better of them.
"Oh that? That's Secret Agent. He handles our anomalies if Secretary misses them." Nurse explained. Intern nodded.
At about 11am, they got news of a car accident down the road. Critical patients were rushing in faster than Security and Secret Agent could handle. They were both working on killing anomalies before they stepped foot into a room.
Intern stepped into room 3 to treat a green cat. The computers were running slower now that everyone was using them. As Intern stood waiting they heard the door open. They turned around and saw the green cat with its mouth open, sharp teeth aimed at Intern's head. They backed away but hit the counter. Sweat dripped down their forehead, heart racing unhealthily fast. Intern turned away and closed their eyes, holding one arm up in front of them. Just as they thought it was over, a gunshot rang through the building. The green cat fell the the floor. Intern gasped and saw Secret Agent in the doorway. Agent approached Intern. "You okay?" he said, the voice being softer than Intern had expected from someone like him. He sounded calm, despite the situation. Even if that was what he was trained for, it was still weird..
"Y-yeah.. I should be. Thanks." Intern couldn't hide the utter terror that remained on their face.
Nurse, having heard the gunshot, came in. "What happened here?" she looked around and saw Intern's expression. "Intern you look like you could use a quick break. Agent, why don't you show them where the break room is?"
Secret Agent nodded. "Follow me." he said, leading Intern to a room with a coffee machine, fridge, counters stained, and a couple of tables. Intern sat down and put their head in their hands on the table. God, they felt pathetic. How useless could they be? Intern heard Agent being called elsewhere and peeked up. Secret Agent looked reluctant to leave Intern like this. "If you ever need any help, call for me, kay?".
Intern nodded and couldn't help but crack the small smile that emerged at Agent's words. Then those butterflies rose into Intern's stomach.
Maybe this job wouldn't be so bad after all..?
