Summary
After the tragic loss of her parents, Aleia Sadeas is sent to the Shattered Plains to live with the only family she has left: her aunt and uncle. Accustomed to a quiet, secluded life, she suddenly finds herself immersed in the cruelty of the politics of the War Camps, where her own family reduces her to little more than a pawn.
However, she cannot stand idly by in the face of injustice. So when she hears about the existence of the bridge men and how badly they are treated, she decides to bring a little joy to the barracks, aided by a strange creature with shifting patterns.
Hidden behind a disguise that makes her appear to have dark eyes, she sneaks out in the middle of the night with a package of food. However, everything changes when a grumpy slave with strange marks on his forehead mistakes her for an enemy and chases her halfway across the camp. After they meet, neither of their lives will ever be the same again.
