Work Text:
Kunikida walks into the Armed Detective Agency right on time, as expected. Surprisingly, Dazai is already there. Unsurprisingly, the man’s asleep on the couch, laying on his back, looking a bit awkward due to the fact the couch is a little small, and his long legs are awkwardly half on the couch and half off.
Kunikida feels annoyance creep through his skin. He briskly walks over to the man, ready to wake him up, but stops once he catches a glimpse of Dazai’s face. He looks genuinely peaceful, face completely relaxed and chest moving in almost silent breaths. It catches Kunikida off guard. Most of the time, when he finds Dazai slacking off and sleeping, the man is usually obnoxiously snoring, or drooling, or doing whatever it takes to piss Kunikida off even in his sleep.
But this is different. It’s almost as if Dazai’s sleeping because he’s actually tired, and not being lazy and irritating.
Kunikida supposes that it has been a pretty busy few weeks, due to the Agency almost falling apart because of Fyodor’s schemes, and they haven’t even found the goddamn man yet. Dazai has actually done a lot recently, has done probably even more that Kunikida doesn’t know about--he knows the man’s habit of running off and doing things on his own.
And though there’s still much to do--they need to track down Fyodor, settle things with the Port Mafia, take care of the President, who’s still feeling unwell--he supposes that today is a good chance to rest. It might be the only relative peace they’ll experience for a while.
“Should we wake him up, Kunikida-san?” Atsushi asks, and Kunikida barely restrains himself from flinching with shock. He didn’t even notice the boy move up beside him.
Kunikida frowns, examining Dazai again. He really does look awfully at ease; just looking at him fills the air with a sense of calm. The sun gently hits the man’s face, and for the first time, Kunikida notices how long Dazai’s eyelashes are, so long they brush the man’s cheeks.
“Kunikida-san?” Atsushi prompts again, looking up at him curiously.
He holds back a sigh. “Leave him be.”
“Huh?” Atsushi blurts, and looks at him as if he’s sprouted another head. Kunikida gives him a sharp look, and the boy nods sheepishly. “Okay, Kunikida-san,” he complies, walking away.
Kunikida stares at Dazai for another moment, before quickly turning and walking towards his desk.
I’ll give him another hour.
He gives him two.
Bonus:
“Oi. Get up,” Kunikida scolds, shaking Dazai awake roughly and continuing even when the man stirs, groaning loudly.
“Kunikida-kuuuuun,” Dazai drawls, not even opening his eyes to check if it’s actually Kunikida shaking him like a rag doll, “I don’t want to.”
Kunikida opens his mouth, about to berate the other, but Dazai abruptly sits up, making Kunikida quickly move back in order to avoid bonking heads.
Dazai turns his head, blinking at the harsh sunlight streaming through the window, the light making the brown in his hair and eyes more golden, before turning his head to look at the clock.
“It’s actually pretty late, huh,” he observes, before turning to meet Kunikida’s gaze. A wide smile spreads across his lips. “Kunikida-kun, you let me sleep in, didn’t you.”
Kunikida crosses his arms, turning his head to the side. “I just had more important things to do instead of taking care of your lazy ass.”
Dazai laughs, and Kunikida knows he’s laughing at him, and now he’s regretting letting Dazai sleep in the first place. He huffs, turning away, calling out a curt “get back to work,” over his shoulder.
“Kunikida-kun,” Dazai says, raising his voice a little so he can hear, “thank you.”
He pauses, turning around almost hesitantly, studying Dazai’s expression. The other actually looks pretty refreshed from his sleep. There’s still an infuriating smile on the other’s face, but there’s also a light in his eyes that Kunikida isn’t used to. He nods at Dazai, not knowing what to say, before turning back around and walking away.
He really does have long eyelashes.
