Chapter 1: camp gardenia

Summary:

day 0 of camp and your summer job

Chapter Text

Before summer camp officially started, every counselor was required to go to camp and get ready for the upcoming summer. The summer camp was about an hour and half to two hour drive away from your house in Ninjago City. Tucked away in the green forest of Ninjago was Camp Gardenia, where you'd be working for the next few weeks. You were on a lengthy phone call with your parents as you drove there.

Your parents forced you to apply for a summer job, because it would be a "great way to make new friends your age" or something. Especially, after your horrible sophomore year of university. You didn't go into details on what actually happened, but your parents knew something was wrong. There was hope in this summer camp and you were looking forward to this few weeks away from home. This summer camp was on the edge of the city and you found it on some website. Apparently, a postion opened up due to some serious incident during last summer, but they didn't go deep into details. You decided not to bring it up until it felt right.

It'll be the first time being at an actual sleep away summer camp, how exciting. New experiences were always welcomed, especially after being completely isolated from people during the school year. You were still open to new opportunities and adventures, anything that life would have in store for you. Your parents reminded you to have a good time and to actually try to have fun. With a promise, you focused on the roads and the sandwich you had packed for a late lunch.

Through the pine trees and winding roads, the actual camp came into view and a huge sign reading out the name of camp. The roads switched from smooth to rocky as you pulled into the empty parking lot, the sun was beaming into your eyes. With a quick goodbye to your parents, you hung up the phone and parked your car. You were the only person in the parking lot besides possibly the manager's silver Kia Soul. With a last look in your mirror, you got ready to start this summer on the right foot.

Fresh pine tree air filled your lungs as you settled down. As you started to unpack your bags from the trunk, then you heard another car pulled up next to you. The flashy car had the roof off, music blasting and was a blindingly bright red color. You recognized the song that was blasting but couldn't recall the name, amazing taste nonetheless.

"Hey! You're the new counselor, right??" A guy's voice came from the passenger side of the car that pulled up next to you. "We've been excited to meet you."

"Hi, I'm Y/N L/N," you kindly smiled and adjusted your bags on your shoulder.

"Lovely to finally meet you, I'm Cole," He returned the smile and got out of the car. "and this is Kai."

Kai was already looking at you with sunglasses on his head waved from the car. Once he was caught staring, he spoke. "Do you need help with that?"

He was talking about your suitcases. They were in a small pile besides your car. Since he was kind enough to offer, you gratefully accepted the opportunity to not luge around all four packed tight suitcases. It was your first day there so you'd also have no idea where to put everything or go for that matter.

"Only if you want," You grabbed two of the suitcases, as he did the same. You had no idea where the girl's cabin was but he seemed to know and led the way.

"So, it's Y/N, right?" He asked while holding your other suitcases.

"Yep, you can just call me N/N," you smiled and followed him.

The two of you traveled for a few minutes and finally the girl's cabin. According to the map, there were different cabins for the campers and counselors, then different areas to explore throughout the days. You saw the lights were off and the door was closed, were you the first one there? The porch had a few wooden chairs and planted pots, it was like home. Overall, it was a pretty small, cute and quaint cabin for a few girls.

"Nice to meet you, N/N." He lifted your suitcases onto the porch. "If you need a camp tour, just come and find me."

"Okay, Kai. Thanks for helping me out." You smiled and then glanced over at your four suitcases.

"Anytime." He waved and started his hike towards the boy's cabin.

Now, it was time to unpack your things. Since you were the first girl to arrive, you had first dibs on your bunk. There was a huge common room with fireplace and a separate room with six empty bunk beds. Besides that, there was a locker room and shower house a short three minute walk from the cabins. The silence atmosphere invited you inside the room. You picked the top bunk and began to unpacked your stuff.

As you started to unpack and do your bedding, you heard the front door open and a girl came inside whist on the phone. When she opened the door to the room, she quickly hung up the phone once seeing you and excitedly greeted you. She had a birth mark on her cheek and beautiful black hair to her shoulders. Her shoulders were built, she must've been a swimmer and she looked good. Focus, you reminded yourself.

"Hi, you must be Y/N! I just heard about you from Kai!" She was glowing. "I'm Nya."

"Nice to meet you, Nya. You can call me N/N." You smiled at her.

"There's a few more girls coming and I know they are excited to meet you." She smiled back and started to unpack her things. "I can take the lower bunk if you want."

"That's great." You watched her move her bags into the bunk below yours.

You had already finished doing your sheets and pillows. Now, you sorted your clothes into the shelves while also picking out your clothes for tomorrow. Nya started to unpack as well, you did notice her many swimsuits. Confirming your previous thoughts, she was a swimmer and the lifeguard.

Another girl comes in, she had her hair in a tight ponytail and had shiny silver hair. She greets the two of you. The girl walked in and came in with a thick book tucked under her arm and her suitcases. She seemed very put together. Her posture was very strong but relaxed. Intelligence radiated off of her.

"Hello, you must be new. I don't seem to recognize you." She put her book on the shelf and seems to analyze your face to remember it.

"Yeah, I'm Y/N, but I go by N/N." You brightly smiled.

"I'm P.I.X.A.L., you can call me Pix." She had beautiful shining green eyes.

"Pix." You nodded and tried to keep note of everyone's names. "Nice to meet you."

Just as you say that, another girl walks in with cool headphones on and suitcases in hand. The girl had bright red hair and also had it in a high ponytail that looked like it took a few seconds to put up. She looked effortlessly cool. The second she saw you, she took off her headphones and walked over to greet you.

"So you're the famous Y/N, who everyone is talking about" She stops right in front of you. "Great to finally put a face to a name."

"Famous?" You laughed a little at her joke, not fully understanding what she meant.

"Yeah, the counselor group chat was blowing up since this morning." She pulled out her phone and handed it to you. You typed your number in and handed it back. "I'll add you to it."

"Thanks." You smiled.

She looked up from her screen. "N/N?"

"Yeah, that's what I go by." Your phone in your pocket buzzed silently.

"Cool. I'm Skylor, by the way." She tucked her phone into her jacket pocket. "Nice to meet you, N/N."

"You too."

After all the unpacking you did, you went to introduce yourself to the boss or managers of this camp. You headed over to the camp office and knocked on the door. No answer. You knocked again, with still no answer. With the last knock, someone opened the door. He had short gray hair and seemed to just woken up from a nap.

"What do you-" He rubbed his eyes and woke up. "Ah, Ms. Y/N L/N, my apologies. Come in."

He opened the door and let you into his office. There were photos from past years and small trinkets on around the office. A name tag on his desk read the name "Garmadon".

"So what brings you here?" He walks over to his desk.

"Just wanted to stop in a introduce myself," you smiled.

Another counselor who was around your age or younger walked into the room needing to ask Garmadon a question. He had blond hair and wore a green zip up hoodie. Once he saw you, he froze, awkwardly apologized and started to walk out.

"Lloyd." Garmadon spoke. "Meet our newest counselor, Y/N L/N."

"Nice to meet you." You smiled.

"You as well." He said dryly.

"That was my son. Don't be scared to ask him or any of the other counselors any questions you have."

"Alright, thank you." You got ready to leave.

Then another older man and woman walked in. He had a long bread with hat on his head and she had glasses with a braid. They must've been the other bosses you had spoken to over the phone. His name was Wu and he greeted you then you left the office. She said her name was Misako and went to her own office. You exited the offices, planning to walk aimlessly around the camp and you pulled out that map they had given you. Unbeknownst to you, Kai saw you leaving the offices and walked over to you.

"Already getting introuble with Garmy?" Kai made his presence known, making you jump and look up.

"No, just wanted to introduce myself." You laughed it off and composed yourself.

"You getting used to camp?" He looked at the map in your hands. "That offer of the camp tour is still up."

"That would be helpful."

Kai showed you around the camp from the offices to the fields, there were plenty of grassy areas lined with trees at the camp. He showed you the arts and crafts building, then both your phones buzzed. In the middle of the tour, the two of you got a text message saying there would be a meeting in the dinning hall.

"Meeting? For what?" You looked at your phone as you two headed over to the dinning hall.

"Counselor shit." He groaned.

The two of you headed over to the main dining hall with the other girls. Nya stood by your side on the right and Pix was on your right. Skylor walked in and stood with you. The dinning hall was filled with circle tables and stacked chairs against the walls, you imagined the hall being filled with loud campers. You recognized Cole from the parking, Kai who just helped you, Lloyd from the office and saw two unfamiliar boys, who probably came to camp while you were unpacking.

All the counselors stood in a circle waiting to the meeting to start. Everyone started to reintroduce themselves to you. You already felt a part the family, they all clearly knew eachother before hand, but didn't hesitate to involve you.

"I'm Jay." The guy in blue with freckles grinned.

"And I'm Zane."

After everyone went around in a circle, everyone spoke amongst themselves about how this summer would go. You wanted few weeks that everyone would be together to be fun. Soon, Garmadon, Wu and Misako walked into the dinning hall. They stood in the middle of the room and the meeting started.

"I hope everyone is excited for this summer." Misako said.

"For our newest counselor, there are a few camp rules that you must follow." Wu gave you a list of rules ripped straight from his notebook. "I trust you will adhere to these rules."

Now in hand, you read over the rules quietly and tucked the paper in your short's pocket. Everything that went on in the meeting was just to lay out the plan and routine for the rest of camp. Everyone was given a list of names for each group. You were paired up with Nya and got a small group of camper's names. The meeting came to a close. The adults left the dinning hall, leaving all the counselors to settle into the camp.

You and the girls talked for a while until dinner rolled around. Skylor was one of the chefs, she had prepared a lovely meal for dinner. The meal was delicious and you complimented her cooking. Once dinner was finished, everyone cleaned up the dinning hall and planned to head over to the cabins.

"Let's go kill some time in the cabin." Skylor smirked while putting away the chairs.

"Kill time for what?" You asked.

"We'll tell you later," Nya said.

Everyone dispersed and headed to the cabins. The girl's cabin was now full of life as the four of you sat in the common room. You took let yourself sink down into the cushioned couch and the other girls picked a sit around you. They were excited to have another girl be a part of the group.

"Soooo, what are we killing time for?" You asked the girls once everyone settled down.

"So, later, there is going to be a counselor only bonfire." Skylor started. "It's a summer tradition."

"But it's a massive secret, none of the adults know about it." Nya clarified. "The boys are in on it too."

"It's to officially kick off the summer." Pix smiled.
