Leon was excited for this trip for many reasons; this was the first time Matthew was coming to Germany with him and he was planning on proposing. Leon has been wanting to propose for a while but was never sure when the right time to do it was. He knew he didn’t want to do it during the season but wasn’t sure when the best place to do it was. But when Matthew asked to come to Germany for almost a month so he could see Leon’s hometown and meet all his friends and family Leon knew it was the perfect time. He’s has a ring for several months; but hiding it in his bags was harder then he initially thought. He was scared to put it in his checked bag in case it got lost and Matthew had a tendency to go through his carry-on bags to see if he had anything Matthew wanted. Leon had always let him so he knew Matthew would find it weird if Leon suddenly told him no. So Leon kept it in his pocket, in a plastic baggie, hoping that he wouldn’t lose it.
Leon flew from Edmonton to Florida before flying to Germany with Matthew. Leon was nervous, fidgeting constantly and scared he was going to tell Matthew his plans at any moment. Leon was glad they made it to Germany without Leon exposing the secret, and after a quick pocket check he batiste’s that the ring still in his pocket. Leon’s mom was there to pick them up with a hug for them both, before driving them back to Leon’s childhood home. He had his own apartment where they were going tomorrow. Tomorrow, the day Leon planned a morning hike for them where he was going to propose at the lookout point.

Leon felt like throwing up. He barely spent last night, spending most of the night either staring at the ring or at Matthew’s sleeping face. Leon went through the motions of the morning, shower, breakfast, packing the car and their bags for the hike. Matthew seems oblivious to Leon’s inner struggles, happy to see the country Leon grew up in. Leon drove them to the trail, checking one last time that the ring was still in his pocket, before they were hiding out. Matthew followed Leon, taking in the beauty of the trail around them. The lookout was over an hour hike up hill but getting there was worth every minute.
“This is beautiful.” Matthew said, shoulder brushing against Leon’s. The two were sitting side-by-side near the edge, passing a water bottle between them.
“It is. I knew you’d like it.” Leon reached into his pocket, rubbing his thumb over the smooth metal of the ring still in there. He was waiting for the right moment.
“You always seem to know what I like.” Matthew turned to look at Leon, taking in his side profile.
“Yeah I think I do.” Leon turned to look at Matthew. He couldn’t help himself before leaning over and pressing a kiss to Matthew’s lips. The two kissed the several minutes, they he’s barely pulled apart when Leon spoke.
“Will you marry me?” Leon whispered into the pace between them, surprising himself with the sudden question.
“Leon, what? Yes.” Matthew pulled back, tears starting to form.
“That’s not exactly how I wanted to ask you, but can’t take it back now.” Leon pulled her ring out of his pocket, presenting it to Matthew. The ring was quite simple, a gold band with one small opal and one small blue topaz inbeded into the band. Leon slipped the ring onto Matthew’s finger, feeling tears in his eyes as well.
“It’s prefect, you’re perfect. I love you.” Matthew took in the ring, not full believing what was happening.
“I love you too, more than you know.”
“You brought me to Germany and hiked me up to this beautiful spot just to propose to me. I must be pretty special for all of that” Matthew pressed another kiss to Leon’s lips, taking in the moment as a fiancé now. He can’t wait to tell people that he gets to marry Leon, how lucky could he be honestly?
