Summary
First they told me the enemy had branded me a war criminal for what I did putting down the uprising. Then Strategic Command told me the rest: that if the Empire ever surrendered, I was the one bargaining chip it had left to trade. Not too long after, the Americans landed at Bornholm with mage formations a generation ahead of ours, led by a man ironically named Custer and I realized my own side would spend me before the enemy ever could. So over a burning nation, on an open radio band, with former allies firing at my back, I defected to the men I'd been killing for eight years, and I helped them take my own capital before the Russy Federation could.
They called it grace. I've spent the rest of my life learning that grace is just the politest word for a leash.
This is how I became the first soldier of the early stages of a Cold War.
