Summary:

Where Abby Whittemore loses all hope.

Chapter 1: wolf moon.

Summary:

“Hey, that’s the spirit!” Stiles chuckled. “Everyone should have a dream, even a pathetically unrealistic one.”

“Like yours that Abby Whittemore will one day realize you two are the perfect match and you’re gonna get married?” Scott teased, amused.

Stiles rolled his eyes.

“Say what you want, but I know it’ll happen. It’s just that my plan is a little slow, but it’ll be effective,” Stiles assured him.

“Stiles, just out of curiosity, which half of the body are we looking for?” Allen asked, diverting their attention from his best friend.

Reserva de Beacon Hills, Beacon Hills, California, Estados Unidos

Beacon Hills Preserve, Beacon Hills, California.

October 21st, 1995.

The sharp crack of gunfire ripped through the air, shattering the peaceful silence that enveloped the forest in the middle of the night. Luna was running through the trees, leaping over hills, moving as fast as she could in a desperate attempt to escape her inevitable fate. The hunters were going to find her, and there was nowhere she could run to avoid them.

The mud hampered her running, her feet slipping every now and then, making her steps heavy, while the rain plastered her blond hair to her face. Her blurred vision and hesitant steps caused her to fall, her knees hitting the ground, her upper body protected by her arms.

She couldn't remember how she had managed to escape them in the first place a few days ago, but she did remember her motivation for running tirelessly: her baby, her precious daughter, whom the hunters would also kill if they found them. She clutched the small body tightly in her arms, gazing at her with adoration. Her little girl had her father's eyes, blue and bright, and she was so beautiful and tiny that she couldn't imagine the hunters daring to kill her, so innocent and barely a baby of just a few days old. But she knew they would, because, after all, she had killed one of their own, and they would hunt her down until they killed her, and then they would kill her baby, her daughter, her world.

Hurried footsteps echoed in her ears, warning her that the end was drawing ever nearer. She tried to get up and run, but the slippery ground pulled her back down. Her baby cried, and then she closed her eyes, surrendering to her fate.

When they finally caught her and were about to kill her, she could plead for her daughter's life, beg for mercy. Her child was still a baby, not even a week old, and didn't deserve to carry a death sentence so young; she was harmless, innocent, weak. She would be human until the transformation happened, and if she didn't inherit their werewolf genes, she would be human her whole life. She didn't deserve to die, never her daughter, never her baby.

Luna let out a sob filled with pain when she sensed a presence behind her, frightened for her daughter. She was so small and delicate, still unfamiliar with the world. She deserved to know it, deserved to grow up and be a wonderful child, a strong girl, and a successful woman. She had to live, she had to.

"Please," she began to plead, trembling.

"Keep running," a male voice interrupted, taking her by the shoulders and helping her to her feet. "Come on, don't stop."

Something inside her stirred when she recognized that voice, her feet back on the ground. She felt immediate relief, perhaps because she now saw a glimmer of hope that her daughter might survive.

She ran as fast as she could, her arms clutching her little girl tightly to protect her, anxiety coursing through her body the moment everything seemed vaguely familiar. She wanted to believe it was because she had traversed this same forest dozens of times before, but an alarm in her head told her something was wrong.

A pained gasp escaped her lips as an arrowhead pierced her leg, sending her sprawling to the ground. The man beside her fell as well, one bullet striking his thigh and another his arm as he tried to move. The fear intensified when they heard footsteps right behind them, and she glanced to the side, noticing the emitters in the ground.

She realized then that this was what had been wrong, the reason the alarm in her head kept repeating that something bad was going to happen. The hunters had led them into a trap, and they hadn't been able to escape.

"Kill them. Kill the baby too," one of the hunters, perhaps the leader, snapped.

None of them could see them because their backs were turned, so helpless to defend themselves and run. Glancing at the man, she could see his wounds healing, and knowing him as well as she did, she knew that unlike her, he had the strength to run and escape.

Taking a ragged breath and hearing the hunters' guns being cocked, she decided to act. She held her baby tightly with one arm and with her free hand took the man's wrist, drawing his attention.

"Take her, please," she begged, her eyes brimming with tears, carefully passing the child to him so the hunters wouldn't see them. The safeties on the guns were released, and she trembled, anticipation coursing through her body. “I'll follow you, I promise, but no... I won't be able to run if I have her with me. Please take care of her. She's your daughter too.”

She saw him hesitate, as if he could see right through her and knew what she was about to do, and she felt her whole being tremble because he was her last—and only—chance.

“Do you promise you’ll follow me?” he asked anxiously.

Luna nodded. The lie tasted bitter in her mouth, and her heart ached as she carefully handed him her baby, making sure the hunters didn’t see her, but it didn’t matter how bad she felt because it would all be over soon. The armed men approached, and he stood abruptly, his wounds healed, and ran away.

The clan leader raised his hand to his men at once, halting their pursuit, curious that the girl they had been chasing all night hadn’t even moved from her spot, still kneeling on the forest floor.

“It’s me they want, isn’t it?” she asked, her voice trembling from the cold that was beginning to seep into her bones and the feeling of his impending death growing with each second. “I'm here now. Do it. Kill me."

"It will be a pleasure."

A final crack echoed through the forest, and then all was silent, the body falling to the ground as life completely left him; halted in its flight, searching for the path away from the hunters, still in the woods, a wolf howled heartbreakingly as it felt the loss strike it.

FIRST PART:

ABIGAEL WHITTEMORE'S SECRETS

Abigael Whittemore no es lo que todo el mundo cree, comenzando por el hecho de que no es una Whittemore en realidad

Abigael Whittemore isn't what everyone thinks, starting with the fact that she isn't actually a Whittemore.

Abigael Whittemore isn't what everyone thinks, starting with the fact that she isn't actually a Whittemore. She, like her brother Jackson, was adopted as a baby and raised like a princess. She grew into a teenager who has everything except the one thing she knows she can never have: the love of Scott McCall, the dark-skinned, unpopular boy she's been in love with since second grade, and who has never shown the slightest interest in her. And, to top it all off, he's in love with the new girl in town: Allison Argent.

January 9th, 2011

ALLEN STILINSKI had a good life and was grateful for everything his uncle Noah had done for him since childhood, adopting him after his mother's death when he was still a baby, giving him a loving family and a brother with whom he grew up and played for countless hours, always laughing and supporting each other.

Dinah Stilinski was a young woman who was widowed a year and a half after marrying the love of her life, Dr. Ian Palmer, and who died at the young age of twenty-six, a few months after the birth of her first and only child. His uncle had cared for him ever since, raising him, and he liked the life he had. Noah Stilinski had taken care of him since then, being the best father he could be despite life's difficulties, and Allen knew he couldn't have wished for a different life, even though nostalgia sometimes struck him and made him wonder what his life would be like if his parents were still alive.

"Happy birthday, Allen," Andrea said with a broad smile, approaching him as she entered their home. Allen glanced at her, noticing that her hair was pulled back and she didn't appear to be wearing makeup, but she looked good.

Behind her, Scott McCall approached with a smile on his face and his hands in his jacket pockets. Allen returned her smile politely before turning his attention back to the girl who had stopped beside him.

"Thanks for coming, guys," he murmured with genuine appreciation.

"I'd never miss your birthday, you know that," Andrea replied. "By the way, I called Abby on my way here. She said she was just leaving her house, so she should be here soon."

"Yeah, she texted me right before you arrived. They're just a couple of blocks from here," he added, nodding. "So, how was San Diego?"

Andrea smiled broadly before answering.

"It was amazing. Oliver and his girlfriend have a lovely apartment, and the view is the most spectacular thing I've ever seen," she said excitedly, happy to have visited her older brother, whom she hadn't seen very often since he left Beacon Hills to study and, after graduating from college, decided to move to San Diego with his girlfriend. “It’d be great if you and Abby came with me next time. I know you'd like it, especially her. Besides, Ollie really wants to see you.”

"Yeah, keep dreaming," Allen teased, ruffling her hair and laughing when he heard her huff. He got a smack on the hand to make him let go, then looked toward the door when he heard the doorbell ring. "Dad's in the kitchen, so it's my turn to answer it. I'll be right back."

The McCall siblings nodded, and Allen walked across the living room toward the door, intending to open it. He stumbled to the side when his brother carelessly pushed him away, grabbing his arm to keep him from falling.

“I’m sorry, but go,” Stiles ordered quickly, anxiously straightening his outfit as he glared at him. “Didn’t you hear me? Go, go, go. Get out, now,” he insisted, looking at his brother impatiently.

Allen frowned at him but backed away, returning to Scott and Andrea, who were staring at him strangely. He shrugged as soon as he was back with them, not knowing what it was all about, until the three of them realized what it was when the door opened to reveal the figure of the girl Stiles had been in love with since they were third graders.

“Andrea!” Abby exclaimed excitedly, walking quickly toward the girl when she saw her after greeting Stiles politely at the entrance, leaving him speechless. Andrea smiled back at her, watching her approach. “I missed you this week. How was San Diego?”

“It’s great. I’ll show you the pictures later,” she promised. “Did you come alone?” she asked curiously, looking at the empty space beside her where her brother usually stood.

Abby shook her head.

“Nope. Jack’s outside talking to Lydia. They’ll probably be in in a minute or two,” she replied.

“Is Lydia outside with Jackson?” the birthday boy asked, trying to look uninterested, but his furrowed brow betrayed him.

“Yeah. Actually, the three of us came together. Lydia came to my house around ten in the morning. I don’t know exactly why,” Abby answered, quickly noticing how her best friend’s expression fell at her words. “God, no. You have nothing to worry about. They’re just friends. We all know perfectly well who Jack’s interested in,” she remarked, glancing at Andrea as she said this last part.

“I don’t completely like Lydia,” Andrea admitted, pretending not to notice Abby’s gaze on her, her eyes scanning the room as if it were something interesting.

“It’s not like you’re the best person in the world,” Allen retorted as quickly as he could.

“Lydia isn’t so bad,” Abby chimed in. “You should give her a chance. I didn’t like her either, but she’s nice,” she asserted.

Andrea nodded absently, still not looking at her. The doorbell rang again, and Stiles answered it since she was still nearby, making a face when he saw the guy on the other side: the brother of the love of his life and also the annoying captain of the lacrosse team, Jackson Whittemore.

"Happy birthday, dude." The blue-eyed boy completely ignored Stiles, addressing the birthday boy. Stiles mimicked him, annoyed, hearing the giggle Lydia Martin let out and smiling at her in greeting, closing the door behind her. "I didn't know you were coming back to town today," he added, looking at Andrea.

"Classes start tomorrow, Jackson. I had to come back today," she replied with obvious sarcasm, glaring at him.

Scott grimaced at his sister's response and the tone she used, expecting a rude comment from the unpleasant captain of the lacrosse team. But on the contrary, Jackson took him completely by surprise by laughing.

"As nice as ever, aren't you?" he joked, then turned his attention to Lydia as she approached Allen to wish him a happy birthday. Andrea looked at them too, interested. "It's probably too much to ask, but be nice to her. It's Allen's birthday," he said calmly, surprising Scott, who had no idea Jackson was capable of such kindness.

Andrea was brief and clear in her reply.

"I'll try."

Stiles approached them after a couple of minutes, having just helped his father with some things in the kitchen. Allen, Scott, and Andrea chuckled softly at the way the pale boy almost fainted from excitement when Abby smiled at him as she offered to help set the table. Jackson also helped, to everyone's surprise, being kind and looking completely docile, unlike his usual demeanor.

🌙

From Allen Stilinski's perspective, Lydia Martin was the most beautiful girl in the entire town. She was also intelligent, though half the time she tried to hide it, and he knew she could be kind and warm beneath that ugly demeanor that most of the high school students talked about. The two of them weren't exactly close friends, and he was quite surprised that she'd come to his party, but he could never complain because he'd been in love with her almost since the moment his brother had been with Abby.

"Happy birthday, Allen," Lydia murmured with a small smile, handing him the small box wrapped in star-patterned gift paper.

"Thank you so much, Lydia," he mumbled, his cheeks flushing red, feeling like a child and aware of the other people's eyes on them. "We're about to eat, let's go to the table," he said.

The girl nodded and walked beside him after he placed the gift on the living room coffee table, sitting down next to Jackson and smiling at the others out of sheer politeness. The people sitting with her at the table weren't part of her social circle, and she wondered why she had decided to go to a celebration to which she hadn't been invited, but the answer came with the sound of Allen's laughter, and she didn't regret her decision when she saw him so happy in the company of his friends: the McCalls, the Whittemores, his family, and her.

🌙

A little while after eating, the group of seven teenagers were sitting in the living room watching a movie. Sheriff Stilinski had decided to go upstairs to his room after the girls kindly helped him clear the table, and the boys arranged the room so everyone could fit comfortably, watching them all settle on the three-seater sofa and the floor, covered with blankets.

Andrea, Allen, and Lydia were sitting on the three-seater sofa while the rest were on the floor, covered with a couple of blankets. Abby jumped when she heard a terrifying scream from the horror movie playing, feeling her heart pound.

"Hey, are you okay?" Scott asked, sitting to her left, speaking quietly so as not to disturb the others.

Abby turned her head to look at him, admiring the beautiful brown eyes of the boy she'd had a crush on since second grade. Few people knew about it—her brother and her two best friends—and luckily for her, Scott didn't seem to know either.

Realizing she was staring at him, she nodded and cleared her throat.

"Yeah, yeah. I'm just kinda skittish," she explained quickly, looking away.

Scott twisted his lips into a grimace at her sudden gesture, convinced that she didn't like him very much because, for as long as he could remember, she always seemed uncomfortable when he was in the room, quickly averting her gaze and barely speaking to him. He was genuinely interested in why she didn't like him, since he couldn't recall doing anything to upset her.

Abby jumped again when another terrifying scene appeared on the screen, clinging to her brother's arm. Jackson stroked her hair and said something softly, looking at her gently.

"Abby, switch places with me," Andrea asked softly, leaning towards her best friend so as not to speak too loudly.

Abby didn't hesitate to nod and let go of her brother so he could watch the movie in peace. Once she was next to him, she clung to Allen, frightened, while Andrea sat between Scott and Jackson.

“I really think she doesn’t like me,” Scott whispered to his sister, glancing sideways at Abby.

Andrea wanted to laugh at his words, amused by how clueless and blind her brother must be not to realize she was actually in love with him, but she shrugged it off. Scott sighed when she didn’t respond and focused all his attention on the movie, noticing the longing way Stiles watched his brother hug Abby, protecting her from everything that scared her, wishing he were him.

🌙

Allen and Stiles were left alone at home as night fell, after their father left for the police station on important business. Everyone else had left as dusk approached, leaving the Stilinski boys alone in their house. They were now on their way to the McCalls' house because Stiles wanted to investigate and, using the excuse of not wanting to leave him alone on his birthday, he'd dragged Allen along.

"Dad's gonna kill us when he finds out," the green-eyed boy declared, watching the McCalls' house come into view and hearing the engine turn off.

"And that's why he's not gonna find out," his brother said. "Since Scott isn't answering his phone and he’ll kill me if I involve Andrea in this, I have to do it the hard way. I'll be right back," he announced, quickly getting out of the car.

Allen watched his brother climb the tree beside the house and onto the roof. He settled more comfortably in his seat and saw him peer out the window, sitting down when he didn't seem to see anything. Sighing, he got out of the Jeep and started walking, intending to knock on the front door like a normal person, but stopped when he saw Scott emerge from his house with a baseball bat and nearly hit Stiles with it as he leaned down, dangling from his legs.

A gasp of terror escaped his lips at the startled screams, and soon all three of them stopped yelling, Scott and Stiles recognizing each other.

"Stiles, what the hell are you doing?" Scott blurted out, his breath ragged.

"You weren't answering your phone," Allen told him, giving him the same explanation his brother had given him, climbing the porch steps to stand near Scott.

"Why do you have a bat?" Stiles inquired, pointing at the sports equipment in his best friend’s hand.

“I thought you were a predator.”

“A pre–” Stiles shook his head, cutting himself off. “Look, I know it’s late, but you gotta year this. I saw my dad leave 20 minutes ago. Dispatch called. They’re bringing in every officer from the Beacon Department, and even State Police.”

“For what?” Scott asked curiously.

“Two joggers found a body in the woods,” he replied, letting go of the roof and landing safely on the ground.

“A dead body?”

“No, a body of water. Yeah, dumbass, a dead body!” he exclaimed sarcastically.

“You mean like murdered?”

“Nobody knows yet,” he confessed as he climbed the porch steps, standing next to his brother. “Just that it was a girl, probably in her 20s.”

"Wait, if they found the body, what are they looking for?" Allen asked, confused.

Stiles had just appeared in his room almost ten minutes ago, tugging at his wrist to get him to follow and explaining in broad strokes that they had to go look for Scott, so he was just as confused as the dark-haired boy.

"That's the best part. They only found half,” his brother announced, grinning broadly. "We're going."

🌙

Beacon Hills Preserve: No entry after dark

Allen got out of the sky-blue Jeep that had once belonged to his mom as the car stopped, the engine and headlights turning off, leaving the three teenagers in the middle of the dark night. Stiles got out of the car as well, both waiting for Scott to do the same.

"Are we seriously doing this?" Scott asked, closing the door once he got out of the car.

"You’re the one always bitching that nothing ever happens in this town,” argued the pale, military-haired boy, crossing the chain that separated them from the woods.

"I was trying to get a good night’s sleep before practice tomorrow," Scott explained, following his best friend along with his brother.

"Right, ‘cause sitting on the bench is such a grueling effort."

"No," Scott said reluctantly, "because I’m playing this year. In fact, I’m making first line.”

To his utter dismay, Allen was quite aware of his brother's crush on her, just as she had on Scott, and he was certain that nothing good would come of it if either of them found out about the other's feelings. His brother would be utterly devastated to learn that the girl of his dreams was actually in love with his best friend, the one who had always been there for him when he wanted to talk about how wonderful she was or how much he liked her. And Scott would surely feel like a bad friend, being responsible (in a way) for her not reciprocating Stiles' feelings.

"I didn't even think about that," his brother admitted.

"And what if whoever killed her is still out here?"

"Also something didn't think about."

"It's comforting to know you’ve planned this out with your usual attention to detail," Scott said sarcastically, his voice slurred from the effort his lungs made to get some air as he climbed a small—not that small, but not that big either—hill of dirt and leaves. He leaned his back against a tree when he finally finished, pulling out his inhaler. “Maybe the severe asthmatic should be the one holding the flashlight.”

Stiles ignored him and threw himself to the ground when the beams of police flashlights appeared several meters away, followed by his brother and his best friend, who were hiding.

“Come on!” Stiles urged, getting up and running.

Allen mumbled his brother’s name and got to his feet, running after him, trying to catch him, while Scott lagged behind due to his poor physical condition caused by his asthma. He was the only one of the trio the police didn’t catch when both brothers fell to the ground, startled by the loud barking of one of the police dogs.

“Hold it right there!” the sheriff shouted, looking at the two boys on the ground and inhaling deeply as he recognized them. "Hang one, hang on" he told his officers. "These little delinquents belong to me."

Allen grumbled under his breath as they were caught, getting to his feet and helping his clumsy brother do the same.

"Dad, how are you doing?" Stiles greeted casually, smiling.

"Stiles," he said seriously, looking at the boy, "do you listen in to all of my phone calls?"

"No," he replied quickly, “not the boring ones.”

"Stiles, you better shut up," his brother muttered, glaring at him.

"Fine," the sheriff said, displeased with his sons' presence at a crime scene. "Now, where's your usual partner in crime?"

"Who, Scott? Scott's home," Stiles assured him immediately. "He said he wanted to get a good night's sleep for first day back at school tomorrow. It’s just us. In the woods. Alone."

"Scott, you out there? Scott?" the sheriff asked aloud, partially scanning the area with the flashlight in his hand, turning it off when he received no answer and tugging at the collars of both of their shirts. "Well, young men, I'm gonna walk you back to your car," he said through gritted teeth, annoyed. "And the three of us are gonna have a conversation about something called invasion of privacy."
