Work Text:
It was just another day at the precinct.
It was already 6pm and Phoenix was just done investigating his new murder case. He was about to grab his bike to return home, but when he saw the weather..
‘Shit.. its raining cats and dogs outside’ he sighed, lost in thought. Why did it have to rain right when he has to cycle like 8 miles!? I guess he will just have to suck it up for now and get it over with.
But when he glanced to his side, he unsuspectingly saw the one and only demon prosecutor, Miles Edgeworth, standing troubled under the rooftop too. Does he have the same problem as him?
‘Hey Edgeworth, did you also forget your umbrella?’
‘Oh, Wright,’ Edgeworth looked a bit amused seeing him, ‘well, I didn’t forget my umbrella, but somebody took mine..’ he glared at Phoenix as if he took it. Which gave him a couple of goosebumps.
‘But my car is parked a couple of blocks from here, so I guess i’ll just.. have to wait it out.’ He sighed.
They both stood there for a while, looking at all the other polices and detectives leave the precinct ready to go home to finally rest (most of them didn’t do anything at work either, but they look like they just got released out of prison)
The area became peaceful. Everyone was already gone with their umbrella whilst the two men still stood there, waiting for the excessive rain to stop.
‘Sigh.. I’ve had enough of this. I’m going home’ ,Phoenix said with a spark of determination in his voice.
‘And how are you going to do that?’ Edgeworth huffed, a bit curious but also knowing it will be something stupid.
‘Run of course, it’s just a bit of rain, I won’t melt’, The defence attorney grinned, it was that stupid smile he always uses in court when he somehow discovers a contradiction.
‘You’ll catch a cold Wright.’
‘Better than waiting here forever’
‘And you’re coming with me. Otherwise you would have to stand here all night’ Phoenix said (half) jokingly while Miles looked at him absolutely bewildered.
‘I-‘, but before the prosecutor could protest, Phoenix grabbed his wrist and ran into the raining sky.
Edgeworth felt the cold water drops falling on to his expensive red suit. He was about to shout at Phoenix, but he felt his anger go away at seeing the sight of him, laughing so genuinely and so innocently like never before.
It felt like they were nine again. Running around in the woods while it was pouring, playing tag (the steel samourai version) and having the time of their lives.
‘You’re a dunderhead, you know’, Edgeworth said, trying to sound intimidating, but grinning like an idiot.
‘Well, this dunderhead will make sure you get home before the sun rises again’, Phoenix said snickering, grabbing Edgeworth’s wrist a little bit tighter.
But while they were running, Phoenix didn’t notice a rock lying on the ground and foolishly fell over it, grasping Edgeworth with him.
They fell into a puddle of water, Edgeworth on top of Wright, who was now absolutely drenched.
They both stared at each other before bursting into laughter.
‘Jeez even Maggey Byrde has more luck than you’, Edgeworth snickered, not having felt so open and genuine before in a while.
‘I will sue that rock!’ Phoenix stated, ‘And I’ll prosecute the case this time, no defending for you you rigged block!’
Edgeworth convulsed with laughter while looking into Phoenix’ bold, enduring eyes filled with amusement.
They suddenly realised how close their faces were to each other. Edgworth still crouching on top of the defence attorney, holding both his wrists.
Their noses were only an inch away, eyes gleaming at each other. Miles felt his face getting hotter and quickly stood up.
‘Um.. lets get going again, Wright’, he says, trying to sound nonchalant, but failing miserably.
He shyly offers his hand to Phoenix to help him stand up, which he takes.
‘Thanks Miles’ Wright says, only realising after that he accidentally called Edgeworth by his first name.
‘No problem.. Phoenix’ the other man said, glancing away. Which makes Phoenix’ heart flutter.
They both walked to the parking lot (they were soaked anyway, so there was no reason to run anymore)
‘Okay were here, see you tomorrow in court then’, Wright was about to leave when Edgeworth grabbed him by the shoulder.
‘Are you seriously suggesting to cycle all the way back home in this downpour!?’
‘Well..’
‘I’ll give you a ride home, Wright’, Edgeworth sighed.
‘Oh thank lord’
