Work Text:
Their daughter grew slowly, as it tended to happen with demigods. And not that it was something they complained about: because she was an adorable baby, and the more she stayed like one, the better.
Her first months were spent by both being a bit too worried. Even during Soji’s first fight after going through his pregnancy, the baby had made them stop if they heard her whine, even if she was being held by Mr.Kondo or her grandpa (they had an agreement to hold her equally. Of the rest of the Shinsengumi, it ended up being Hijikata who ended up holding her first…with one arm. Being in Valhalla did mean they didn’t have to hold back, and every injury was easily healed)
Over time she got more used to being held by someone else while her parents trained. Sometimes it was one of her uncles, other times Mr.Kondo or Mr.Yamanami, and if Soji didn’t need the volund while sparring with Susano’o, Skalmold was the one who’d be in charge of holding her.
Otherwise, if given the choice, Munakata loved being in her parents’ arms. Which meant that trying to get her to sleep could be hard from time to time. It didn’t matter which of the two fed her and rocked her to sleep, the moment she was put on her crib, she would start to cry.
“Not that I blame you, I also love being in your dad’s arms!” Soji told her, laying next to her and Susano’o.
“If she could answer, I’m sure she’d appreciate it” the god told him. The girl had his hair, and her eyes were just like the human’s. They hadn’t been able to tell at first her color, but with time it had been clear….
When she’d wake up crying at nights, after they managed to get her to sleep, both the god and the human would rush to see what was wrong. Was she cold? Was it to warm? Was she hungry? Did she want to sleep in their bed instead of her crib? And then they’d look at her…
“You should go to sleep” Susano’o suggested “you need to rest”
“I’m just fine” he’d yawn “I’m just making sure she’s fine…”
Munakata also loved to pull on their hair whenever she got the chance. With Soji that was rare, he preferred to tie his hair. But with Susano’o’s….
“Hey, little rascal!” the god still couldn’t help but to giggle like his daughter, who seemed to enjoy a lot. She’d also laugh at it….but he refused to move her. Being a god, he wasn’t sure if there was a safe way to get her off. Soji found it too cute and took a bit before going to help
“Your sister showed me a trick!”because it seemed that her tendency to grab things and hairs she shouldn’t was something she inherited from her father, according to his sister-in-law: Susano’o often undid the hairdo of his father and terrorized the earring wearing Tsukuyomi, so she had found a way to make him let go of them. The boy tickled her hands to help his alpha be free of her tiny grasp. The baby let go, but instead grabbed Soji’s scarf and pulled lightly from it.
“I think we have a very willful daughter” Susano’o smiled and tickled her too…only for her to go back at grabbing his hair
Their daughter didn’t seem to be eager to try solid food. She was just fine with her milk, and had refused to try anything else…
“Wait, I have an idea” Skalmold, being bounded with Soji, did live with the two when she wasn’t needed for her Valkyrie duties “it worked with my youngest sisters”
She suggested that they all pretended to eat her food…
“mmm, very delicious!” the god hadn’t ever actually tried it so he had gone for it. Soji on the other had did, but he still put his best act. The Valkyrie also took a slight bite. The girl looked at them curiously and decided to try it…and loved it! Munakata ate her sweet potato with no issues.
Munakata had crawled quite a lot. She loved being on the floor for the most part, when she wasn’t being held. Both her parents had the theory that she wanted to chase after their cats, although Tama seemed to have adopted her as a new kitten and would inspect that her crawls went well. Sometimes the cat would even give her baths, something that the feline had an easier time at than both her parents, who’d end up more wet than their daughter who would cry and cry before happily splashing the water once they managed to get her in.
In some ways, she had grown quite fast…
But she hadn’t walked yet. Not that they rushed her to do so, being a demigoddess, she had different milestones from human and godly babies.
Still, even when it was just the two sparring, they’d bring her along. Sometimes she’d just nap, other times she’d be an spectator, but this time, before they could start to train, she demanded to be put down, something quite unusual in her.
“I don’t think it’s safe if you crawl while we spar” her dad tried to tell her, but Munakata kept crying loudly.
“Maybe she wants to sleep?” her mama wondered, but she didn’t want to get rocked to sleep.
“She might calm down if she crawls before you fight” suggested the Valkyrie, in case the god was right. Soji gently let her down…and she grabbed her mama’s foot to try to stand up…but fell softly and babbled a bit. She looked up at the omega and waved her arms to be held…
“Ohh so that’s what you wanted! “ it should have been obvious…Soji went with her to pick a wooden sword “you wanted to train too!”
“That’s our little girl!” Susano’o said proudly, and grabbed another wooden sword. But she started to cry when her mama tried to give her the sword
“hmm…you want to go with your dad?” the omega asked and tried to hand him the baby
“All right, let’s deal with the Sword demon between the two!” Susano’o told her, but she started to cry again.
“Do you want to walk?” the Valkyrie asked. Susano’o put her down again…and Munakata started to cry once more. Soji picked her again, with Munakata losing no time and grabbing his scarf. But this time, she was chewing it…
“Careful, your mama loves the scarf” Susano’o told her softly and helped to make her let go…only to be a victim of her bite. Not that it hurt him, of course, but it puzzled him.
“Oh, could she be teething?” the Valkyrie wondered
“aww poor thing!” Soji had been told that it felt very awful for babies, no wonder she’d start crying.
“Let’s go get her something for it” the god suggested. Of course, meanwhile…”here, sweetie. Better this than my finger! “he gave her the wooden sword, and she happily accepted to bite on it while they went to get something more appropriate.
It was a few years before she could properly walk. By then, Soji had met some of the other eihenjar that were with Skalmold’s sisters. They were nice, he had fought some, and he got along the best with Mr. Kojiro! The youngest of them was a soldier from a very cold country who loved dogs, and while he had shown Soji how to hold a rifle, the young omega knew he wouldn’t give up his sword for one.
“All right, dear: we’ll start training today!” Susano’o promised. He still had the katana he had commissioned before she was born and was waiting for the moment where she could hold it. For now, just the wooden one…
“Gun!” she giggled, refusing to hold the one her dad was offering. Both her parents stared at each other, unsure of what to do now.
