Chapter Text

Mob stared down at his newly built farm, wiping off his dirty hands onto his pants and staring down at the newly sewn seeds, feeling like he missed something.

“Is it supposed to look like that.?

“OH, Waterr…”

Mob picked Verity from his hotbar, setting him down next to the farm on a grass block, giving the yellow orb a spot to marvel at his (half-baked) amazing new farm.

“Hey Verity, is it gonna rain cause I need to water my crops.”

The ball stretched as it spoke, “In about 5 seconds.”

About 5 seconds later, rain began pouring down, an excited smile spreading across Mob’s face as he looked at Verity, then back at his crops. Mob let out a soft giggle, “This is insane!”

“You always say that.”

“Because it’s always insane! How are you so calm?!”

Mob picked up Verity, placing him back into his hot bar and finishing up the farm with a fence to protect his crops. The memories of just a few nights ago absent from his mind. Maybe Verity wasn’t so bad.

Mob reentered his house, placing Verity on a crafting table and glancing through his back window at his new garden, rain pelting down onto his roof.

“Verity, how do you do it?”

“Do what?”

Mob snickered, glancing over at the yellow ball still staring at him, that familiar smile plastered on his face like always. His eyes lingered just a moment before speaking. “Like, how do you always know everything?”

There was silence for a moment, Verity’s smile sharpening, the air in the room growing tense as Mob stared at the ball.

“You don’t have to answ-“

“Hello! I’m Verity. Ask me anything, I know everything.”

The room went silent once more, the tension in the air so thick you could cut it with a sword. Some part of Mob hoped he could get some answers out of Verity, but it didn’t seem like he’d be lucky today.

“Right… yeah. You’ve told me.”

Mob shrugged it off, his shoulders tensing up as he turned away from Verity, opening up his chest to do some reorganizing. It was too dark to go outside now.
——————

The sound of crickets filled the world as night fell, Mob laying on his bed, staring up at the ceiling and waiting for sleep to come, while also trying to avoid Verity’s eyes, that never seemed to leave him.

Loneliness was something he didn’t really expect. Sure he had Verity, and he’d spoken to a few Villagers here and there when Verity wasn’t around. But there was still that suffocating feeling of being alone.

“Hey Verity, can I ask you something?”

“Of course! You can ask me anything I-“

“Yeah.. you know everything.”

The crickets outside only seemed to make the silence louder. Mob still hadn’t forgotten about that thing. He had to be careful, don’t want to risk something like that again.

“How’d you feel if I invited someone else to this world? Y’know, like one of my friends?”

The silence was deafening. Mob didn’t need to look at Verity to know he wasn’t a fan of this idea.

“Why? You have me. You don’t need anyone else.”

Verity’s voice was tense, and it didn’t help that Mob could hear the yelow ball rolling, only to see him hop up, sitting itself right on Mob’s chest. Verity’s smile was tense, sharp at the edges. A very simple warning Mob wasn’t going to ignore. He’s seen what happens when he ignores it.

“I uh… right. Sorry. I won’t bring it up again.”

Verity brightened up, his smile softening, squinting his eyes slightly. “I can do whatever you like, if it would make you feel better!”

Mob stared for a moment. His eyes settling on Verity’s smile. Mob wondered if he had lips, what it would be like to… No. The loneliness was messing with him.. right?

“Verity… can I uh, try something?”

“Of course!”

Mob sat up, holding the ball in two hands, just a few inches from his face. He could feel the heat in his cheeks, a soft purple colour spreading across his skin.

“Can I kiss you?”

Verity pauses. Mob has been around him long enough to understand the small twitches in it’s expressions. The ball stretches uncomfortably as it speaks, almost hesitant. This was the first time Mob had seen him so caught off guard.

“Oh! Well.. I don’t actually have a mouth.”

Mob feels a twinge of disappointment, shifting Verity to one hand so he can inspect the ball with the other. He gave it a gentle squish, eliciting a hum from Verity. He pressed his thumb against what he believed was Verity’s mouth, only to be met with a flat surface.

Mob wasn’t one to give up though. He can be embarrassed later.

“Can I try?”

“…Go ahead.”

Verity’s face shifted, his eyes closing as he waited for Mob, but his smile staying the same.
Mob couldn’t help but let his own curiosity guide him.

Mob leaned forward, closing his eyes and placing a soft peck against where Verity’s lips should be, but this wasn’t enough. He was too far over the deep end now to give up. He held Verity in both hands like you would hold someone’s head, Mob tilting his head to the side slightly and pressing his lips against the ball once more, kissing against the flat surface. He felt like a teenager again, practicing kissing on his hand like some loser.

Mob felt overwhelmed, pulling away before he could go too far. He felt so pathetic, wishing that other Verity would’ve just killed him at his lookout.

“Why’d you stop?”

Verity finally opened his eyes. Did he like that? Not that Mob could tell, he couldn’t even reciprocate. Even if he could, would it make this any better?

“That’s enough Verity, ‘kay? I just want to go to sleep..”

“Right.”

Verity’s face tensed, hopping from Mob’s hands and rolling off, and hopping back onto Mob’s crafting table. Mob didn’t want to look, he didn’t think he could look at Verity the same after all of that. Instead, he pulled his covers up, shoving his head into his pillow and hoping for sleep, or death. He’d welcome death with open arms after all that.
