"You're burning up," Gyro said, his voice thick and whisper-quiet. "Just as I thought."
No trace of professionalism remained in Gyro's expression, neither in the way his eyes fell, with open want, to Johnny's lips, nor in the way his tongue darted out to lick his own. There was an honesty to the slip in Gyro's composure, breaking out of him at the fissures of his self-control, inspiring within Johnny the very same overpowering impulse that had consumed him by the campfire. He would not mistake the opportunity to surrender to it again. Every other desire within him subsided, his inhibitions silenced, any second thoughts no closer to him now than the shore of either ocean.
"So," Johnny started, leaning in closer. "We gonna survive this, or what?"
Or: After escaping Ringo's orchard, Johnny and Gyro struggle to put whatever exists between them into words, let alone act upon it. A mysterious fruit they consume changes that.
