Work Text:
Sasuke wasn’t a boy that often came to class. He was threatening, quiet and blunt. With few friends and many enemies—he was a guy no one really wanted to go near. Except Hinata.
The few times he decided not to skip, Hinata would not be too far behind. He’d go to the third floor, to what used to be their music classroom, which sat to the far left and was now empty, and whatever he did in there, she did not know. She assumed that he would scroll around on his phone or sleep. Or maybe sit by the window, with his head rested on the palm of his hand as the soft, cool breeze would blow at his bangs. Either way, she’d feel intrigued.
Hinata drew loosely on her notebook, partly too distracted by the empty seat next to her to take notes. Sasuke was her seatmate. The teacher had decided it. But he showed up so rarely it became as if she didn’t have a seatmate at all. That was something Hinata felt partly thankful for, yet also annoyed by.
Sakura, whose seat was in front of hers, turned around with a smile.
She was holding a few pieces of papers, which she quickly handed to Hinata.
Hinata grabbed the papers and looked at her blankly before looking over at the other classmates. Everyone was being handed papers.
“Ah, Sasuke isn’t here today,” Sakura looked over at his seat with a frown, “maybe we should get Iruka to give him his papers.”
Hinata shook her head. “No!” She blushed at her own excitement. “I can do it.”
Sakura did not mind, shrugging her shoulders. “Okay.”
The lesson could not have gone by any slower. Sasuke was in school, Hinata had seen him by the lockers around lunch as she’d been on the way to her lesson. He hadn’t been carrying any bags nor books, which was not too shocking.
She got up once Iruka announced that the lesson was over and, with hurried steps, rushed to the third floor.
Standing in front of the closed door, Hinata realized where she was and what she was about to do. Her breathing became dry and shallow as sweat sat on her neck. The papers wrinkled in her hands and it took several beats of silence before Hinata managed to knock on the door. It was silent. For a long awkward time.
Hinata started to wonder if no one was in the room. She knocked again and this time said, “Excuse me, Sasuke, are you in there?” She gulped dryly. “I have some important assignments from our teacher.”
It was still silent.
Hinata let out a sigh and reached for the doorknob, ready to open the door when it suddenly flung open.
Sasuke stood in front, with a cold gaze that was aimed at her.
Hinata shuddered under it.
But then she turned hot, too hot. She frantically stepped back, nearly tripping over her feet. She held out the papers for him to grab. “These are the assignments Iruka wanted me to share…!”
He took hold of the paper, but his eyes stayed on her.
“How’d you know I was here?”
Hinata blinked.
“I… uh…” Perhaps coming here was a mistake.
Sasuke did not seem pleased with her lack of a reply.
“Don’t disturb me again.”
He walked away.
Hinata could not look at him. Leaning against the wall behind her, she sighed. This had been her first interaction with Sasuke. And it’d been nothing but a disturbance to him. Hinata held back the tears.
For the past few days, Hinata had not seen Sasuke. Partly because he was not coming to class, but also because she’d been avoiding him.
These feelings were pretty stupid, really. Sasuke barely knew she existed while she held such strong one-sided feelings for him.
Hinata wrote in her notebook, taking notes of what Iruka had been saying.
Sakura turned around and whispered to Hinata, “Have you heard?”
“What?”
Sakura continued, “Apparently some students were fighting Sasuke. It was just him against several guys.”
“Is he okay?”
Sakura shrugged. “I don’t know, I just heard the fight was crazy.”
Class went by quickly. Hinata hadn’t noticed until Iruka’s voice, saying that they were ending the class early, had dragged her out of her trance. Usually, Hinata would’ve taken bashful steps towards the hallway and blushed profusely simply from being near the same hallway Sasuke was near.
But that was stupid.
So she went to her locker, picked up her notebooks and walked her usual route past the small bakery and café to get home.
Yet, despite not wanting to, her mind had been filled with Sasuke.
Sasuke was in a fight? With who? Was he okay?
Hinata ran to the closest supermarket and bought whatever medicine she could.
She rushed back to school, hoping that he was still there.
Hinata stood in front of the door. With shaking fists she knocked. He’d probably find her weird. Rightly so. He didn’t know her yet she’d rushed to get him medicine. All because of her one-sided feelings.
It was foolish, and stupid, and so very much love.
The door opened and again she was met with a cold gaze.
“I thought I told you-”
“Here!” Hinata interrupted. She held the bag with medicines up in the air. “I heard that you were recently in a serious fight… So I brought you some medicines so that you can heal properly.”
Hinata felt her cheeks turn warm. But she held her gaze. With her shaking hands and drumming heart.
Sasuke took hold of the bag.
“Sorry for having disturbed you.” She’d spoken with a shy, bashful smile.
Hinata turned, and left, feeling her chest having become a little lighter.
As Hinata walked to class the next day, she saw Sasuke, as she usually did, head towards the empty classroom.
But suddenly he stopped by the door, turned, and met her eyes.
For a quick second, he smiled, and before she could realize what she’d just seen, he’d already left.
Hinata stood, with flushed cheeks and an affectionately drumming heart.
Perhaps, her feelings had not been as stupid as she’d thought they’d been.
